Supernatural Toll Egg

The dark, sluggish-seeming midnight blue of this egg washes over this egg in a stagnant flow. It is a glossy thing, as if perpetually in water, but the shine does nothing to sharpen the hazy ripples that mar the surface. Only at the apex is this hue broken -- a crisp disc, gold-and-copper-bright, rests at the top, imprinted with nonsensical squiggles in a darker shade that seems to hint at a portrait that's been well-worn. When viewed directly from above, it might even look as if it were a coin, dropped into some slowly-moving river.

A scraping. Another. And then the 'coin' at the top of the Supernatural Toll Egg pops free, revealing pale stickiness within. It isn't long before the hatchling discovers the new exit: first a scraggly blue tail emerges, the opening widening and dissolving under the increased attentions of a kicking pair of back feet. Less than a handful of seconds pass before the Liberated Pinstripe Blue hurriedly backs free from his prison, stubborn fragments of shell still glued to his neck and head.

Liberated Pinstripe Blue

Pale, almost ice-touched blue is his dominant shade, providing a certain solidity to an otherwise rangy form. Where some dragons glisten and gleam, his only decoration is a faint cornflower striping at shoulder, wrist and chest that leaves his haunches bare but provides an air of dignity rather than making him look half-dressed. His chest is almost comically deep, emphasizing the extreme tuck-up of his hindquarters while balancing broad wings. Gangly cadet blue wingspars support smoke-chased cornflower sails colored a uniform shade which matches his faint bands of color. The trim lines of a slender tail are mirrored fore and aft in delicate wrists; crisp, cream talons grace each paw, a bright contrast to the subtlety of his hide. Blunted ridges, apple-round and inviting to touch, rise smoothly from his shoulders and crest his neck. Small but uncommonly intent eyes are nearly lost beneath bulging headknobs. A distinctly pointed muzzle tapers from his forehead, finishing off a face touched with arrogance.

Temperament

Chadamalith is quirky, intuitive, and twitchy. Drawn to open spaces and fascinated by observing the simplest things, from interactions to the workings of nature. Social but often in disarming, unpredictable ways; while hesitant to trust at first, once attached he'll prove loyal, and may bowl you over with his intensity and his compelling desires both to live life to the fullest and to find and reveal the truth.

From the moment his mind finds yours, you'll know that this quirky yet intuitive fellow is here to stay. His unusual methods and offhand bluntness may be disarming, Javeri, but eventually his easy charm will likely win you over. It's not that he doesn't care for you; indeed, while he is slow to trust, once that trust is earned you'll get his relentlessly driven loyalty accompanied by occasional flares of jealousy.

Weyrlinghood is a time of intense study, demanding great focus. When he sets his mind to it, his zen-like patience for observation approaches meditation and, though that won't always manifest as attentiveness in lessons, he may surprise you later with his quest for the 'truth' of how things work and why they are so: « If we can travel *between* in a few heartbeats with a destination in mind, why can we not create destinations no one has ever seen if we imagine all of their details clearly? »

His memory will fluctuate as much as any dragon's, but he possesses a penchant for detail in recall that's whimsical in focus but precise in association, including colors, textures, and images with detail exacting enough to please any Harper: « Light penetrates inside. And sounds, voices. You remember them, too. You know, when we were in the egg. »

This introspectiveness comes in stark contrast to restless moments when he's twitchy and impatient, bordering on anxious. He cannot always put into words what he wants or needs, leaving you scrambling to comfort him. Flight, once he's old enough, will soothe some of his fretting, combined with wide open spaces; in these moments, he's most in tune with you. He understands that you're not without your issues as well, Javeri, and will promise quite plainly not to abandon you, as your mother has done, regardless of how loudly you protest his assertions

As Chadamalith matures, his compulsive, driven and intuitive nature may continue to push you into situations you'd just as soon avoid. Whether his motivation is that it's good for you to face your fears or whether he just wandered the pair of you into the midst of a 'situation' may remain his to know.

His quirks will endure; for example, his need for spaciousness may extend to -your- weyr, where little furniture is tolerated. In fact, Chadamalith would prefer to be on his ledge, enjoying the open air and indulging in his fondness for fruit. « Is it time for citrus harvests yet? Perhaps they will let us eat the leavings again. No? Javeri, maybe we could visit the orchards of Nabol? »

He'll continue to have a strong fascination in seeking truths, though his methods and definition of 'truth' expand. « What is scrying, Javeri? One of Nerat's daughters said she used redfruit peels to determine her lover's name, but she didn't know I was listening. »

Profound in his simplicity, he may find peace in complex things, such as a thorough consideration of the life cycle of plants, or how each season progress through birth, death, and rebirth until trees and plants grow again toward the light and provide delicious fruits. « Drop a stone into a pool of water and see how it ripples. » He's a thinker who becomes more Zen as he ages, adopting his own techniques for calming you both. He may spout proverbs as a reassurance, or gain unique insight into problems from his reflection, but his self-control isn't foolproof: he'll still struggle with his own beliefs and may have outbursts or moments of twitchy restlessness. What is likely to come with age is that he'll try to reason through things later, but you'll be able to shape his future just as much as he shapes yours.

Chadamalith is no stranger to the ladies, rising after greens both unfamiliar and known--more frequently than you might prefer. It's not the pursuit that thrills him, but the green herself; there's just something about them that is impossibly alluring. Although he won't ever discuss his attractions with you, it doesn't mean they're not there.

His approach to each green differs according to some random guideline. He'll turn on easy charm for some of them but not for others. While he'll flirt casually with the majority, when one of them shows an interest in him, he promptly loses his own - usually! He tends to cling to the greens who ignore him and, win or lose, he will hover about some ledges for days after the flight. Other greens, however, he will forget about in the blink of an eye, dismissed entirely from his mind once his initial desire has cooled.

As arbitrary as his feelings may be, there is one constant in Chadamalith's methods: his strangely level-headed pursuit during the flight itself. He doesn't show off or forget himself in his lust, coolly keeping his distance until it's time for the final lunge. His calmness might be mistaken for confidence, but the truth of it is that he's too grounded to ever completely lose his head, not for anyone but you. Chadamalith has a knack for comprehending formations and why they work. By this time, he's unlikely to surprise you with how quickly he catches on to each new drill. This may cause problems for you; once he's figured out the techniques, he'll quickly start searching for ways the formations could improve, regardless of whether your Wingleader solicits suggestions. He usually shares these only with you, but his little adjustments are likely visible, however careful he is in applying them. When caught, he will give every impression of attending to the rebuke -- but the moment the storm has passed, he's back to doing things his way, because his way is better.

Despite this natural understanding of Thread-fighting, however, Chadamalith has no real ambition and won't strive for a higher position unless you desire it. He does best on the edges of a formation and working independently, when possible. You are the only one he's truly willing to work closely with, and it will be your job to make sure that he can, and will, work in tandem with the rest of the wing.

As a blue, he'll also excel in his natural capacity as a Search dragon, though his methodology may be just as puzzling here as in all things. He'll study the situation from a distance, ignoring a lineup of potential candidates, then decisively pick out his choices.

Mindvoice

In ire or excitement, images zip past in a wild barrage similar to the mental touch of his sire's. In sharp contrast, in his resting or restrained state, he intentionally conjures a blank, cornflower blue slate, his vacant mind in a tranquility approaching meditation that is often accompanied by the light, sweet scent of citron. Frequently, his thoughts are reinforced in the softest refrains of a melody. As you grow to know each other better, you may find that this very faint soundtrack is enough: the subtle yet changing background music may communicate enough of his state of mind to you that words are unnecessary.

Itchyspots

His protruding headknobs, soft as they look, are a persistent source of itches, especially when he's been thinking a lot. His feet, too, from his ankles on down, aggravate - and woe be unto you when they both get going!

Internal Impression Message

The noise of the galleries fades away, and with that silence comes calm. The heat of the sands is no longer important, nor is any anxiety or fear that might have previously been on your mind: there's only peace, and it's good. Then, suddenly -- you're hungry. And with that realization comes a myriad of images, overlapping pictures that eventually merge into a single, cornflower-striped blue. « I've been looking for you, Javeri. » Confidence and absolute certainty ring in your head, and as the blue tilts his head back to meet your eyes, it becomes clear that this is the beginning of the rest of your life. This is your new start, your clean slate. « I'm Chadamalith, and I have so many questions for you, » he says, and his eagerness is now your own. « Let's find some food, and then we can talk. »

External Impression Message

Liberated Pinstripe Blue is growing impatient with his quest. He abandons his easygoing amble, and there's sudden purpose in the way he whirls around and stalks back down the line, giving each candidate an increasingly restless but ultimately fruitless look as he passes. Then a doubletake -- what's this? A few bounding steps forward and he's practically sitting on her feet when he finally leans back to meet black-brown eyes.

Inspiration

Dragon Inspiration: Your Chadamalith is a combination of superstitions having to do with a fruit-related death-and-rebirth myth (see Tu Bishvath here: http://www.myjewishlearning.com/holidays/Tu_Bishvat/TO_Tu_Practices/Fruit_705.htm) and the conspiracy 'debunker' Charlie Crews, who, in addition to being possessed of a near-addictive fondness for fruit, is on a driven quest to solve the mystery of his own situation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_(TV_series)). Images of Damian Lewis, the actor who presents the character of Charlie Crews, were the primary inspiration for Chadamalith's description. Here, the cornflower-blue-eyed Lewis is seen in character in his uniform-like pinstriped blue shirt in front of his 'conspiracy wall.' - here, here.

Name: Chadamalith - Chadamalith is inspired by a combination of the names of the character, Charlie Crews, and the actor, Damian Lewis, combined with the television program's title: Life.

Egg Inspiration: Coins surface in many cultures as items of superstition -- from 'good luck' pennies and placing coins under the tongue of the deceased to pay Charon's toll (such as the one on this egg), to placing coins over a dead person's eyes and using a coin flip to settle matters.
