Snowveil Egg

In climates other than Ista, this thing called 'snow' falls from the sky and sticks to the ground. Snow has arrived, blizzarding wild across the shell of this egg. Lines of brilliant white score the surface of the shell, drawing diagonal lines through which hints of lavender-grey serve to suggest a landscape drowning in snowfall. More white surrounds the base of the egg, rising in irregular heaps to meet the falling cascades. The white is sparser near the top, diminishing to a few soft and scattered spots of feather-edged lightness against deepening shadow. Overall, the impression is of cold, and cautious hands touching the shell might expect the fierce-falling white to slide into their hands.

Snowveil Egg grows softer, fluffier, as if the drifts and blizzard its shell suggests has come to life. But within the storm, shafts of color appear, pale tea and ocean shades glimmering and concealed again by shifting shards of shell. The sticky substance that's held those cracked pieces together loses coherence at last, and the puddle slips apart, revealing a damp and thoughtful-seeming green.

Imperial Tea Green

She holds her head high, this tall and regal green. Her hide glistens like damp silk in pale shades of celadon frosted with a thousand microscopic gems over her throat, chest and belly, darker and less sparkling along her spine and tail. Her legs are long and her paws are small, her talons so dainty that they're translucent. Though sparingly built and slender through the haunches and shoulders, the great span of her wings dwarfs her body. Even folded, her wingsails conceal the shape of her, a shelter from storm or prying eyes. Those sails are a cool tea green, and her 'ridges the same; the latter rise like a fine collar along her lithe lady's neck. Her facial features are almost miniature, though her cheeks are high-boned and her chin quite prominent. Small, sloped eyes contain a secret unsatisfied light in their whirling depths, and above them slim browridges arch high into narrow points painted in dark ocean teal.

Temperament

The pride, grace and poise that will be Eileyth's later legacy are hinted at even early on. From her hatching on she's absolutely confident, certain of her choices (including you, Seliene) before she's even made them. This is not, of course, to say that her opinions are always perfect.

She may ask all the questions that most young dragons do - « Why can't I hunt my own food? » - but if the answers don't satisfy her, or if she's already come to her own conclusion, there's little you can do to convince her she's wrong. « The herdbeasts look very small from here. Certainly I could defeat one! » Eileyth learns best by personal experience.

She chose you for a reason, and her admiration for your own wit and capability is strong. Though she will rarely give up the idea that she's 'right,' she will bend her will to yours when you're able to convince her of its importance. Never will she look down on you should your path turn out to be disadvantageous, either. « We don't make mistakes, » Eileyth might airily inform one of her clutchmates. « We experiment. »

There are some chores of weyrlinghood - of life - that she will cherish, some lowly tasks she can't deem tedious because they're just too /fun./ You'll find out about one of them right away: bathtime. Though not particularly fastidious in other aspects of her life - Eileyth is, deep down, a free spirit - she does love to be clean, and what better way to become clean than to cavort and play in the water? Eileyth likes best to have friends, yours or hers, along for this graceful sport, and though she will not stoop to water-fights, there's nothing stopping her from inventing games of breath-holding and deep-sea diving. She'll grow to be an adept swimmer, as dragons go.

As her cleverness increases her successes, her 'experiments' fail more rarely and her life seems (in her mind, anyway) to fall into its proper place. By now she will have turned her attentions to you. She will be most interested in your choices, your challenges, your risks - and she loves to discuss these things with you at length, reviewing options and seeking new ones. She is often able to see an option where none seemed present; she loves puzzles where the answer is easy, but unobvious. More often she's content to just ask questions that gently challenge your assumptions, helping you create new solutions yourself. When these 'chats' lead to success she is proudest of you both.

Even when a situation prohibits what she might come to call a 'tactical session,' Eileyth is there to support you and help you when you need it most. Her very presence, always attentive at some subconscious level, is the foundation of that support. More overt, however, is the fact that if she should sense you floundering or your temper heating, she's there to offer you alternatives in a hurry - encouraging a habit of quick thinking rather than quick acting that may serve you both well through life.

She has a maternal streak. You may never recognize it until first the two of you ride search together; with you she is so companionable, so much your equal, that it may never have occurred to you to think of her as mothering. But the way she takes a shine to a potential candidate, sheltering them beneath her wing or the curve of her neck, might be telling. She prefers to bring her chosen candidates back to the Weyr immediately, taking possession of them on the spot. Though this could be a sign of genuine affection, there's coolness in her demeanor - at some level she thinks of candidates as a commodity to be collected.

There comes to every green a time when her plans fail her. For Eileyth it is most likely to come as a surprise - to her, anyway; it's possible /you/ will pick up on the signs long before she does, in which case you'll have the chance to make preparations. Even if you try to convince her, however, she'll deny it. And why shouldn't she? As far as she's concerned, she's not acting irrational. She's not being headstrong and risky, utterly unlike her usual, calculated self. « I am behaving normally. I've just had a couple of moments in the last two days. »

The biggest moment, of course, is yet to come. And when it does, watch out. Eileyth is never prouder, never more glorious and vain in her own glory, than when she leaps into the sky pursued by a many-colored court of lustful males. Their attentions are welcome, the more lavish the better; let them show off for her, fight for her, anything she can entice them to do in order to earn - not her partnership, for Eileyth is yours and yours alone, but a moment. Yes. A moment, a single, soaring perfect moment - /that/ she'll give away.

Though Eileyth despises the idea of 'work,' she is not too proud to fulfill her duty. Thread is abhorrent to her on principle alone; it need not be deadly and dangerous to the world and people she loves to earn her wrath. And her wrath is a cold kind of calm, calculated and cunning. In this manner she strikes Thread, with her mind entirely focused and her attention honed to the sharpest of points. She experiences in Threadfighting an emotional thrill, a high that surpasses mere adrenalin rush, neither joy nor ecstasy but almost an enhanced awareness of life and being. This energy is hard to come down from, and when a 'fall is done she (and you) may need to cool your heels or find yourselves making bold, rash choices you later regret.

Though not an opportunist, it is certainly not beneath Eileyth to seek success. Whether it be rank in the wing or the more slippery 'ranks' of the social scene, she is absolutely willing to capitalize on your best traits and her own in order to achieve the goals you set together. She's willing, also, to capitalize on traits you may not have previously considered so good. « Tell him you would like it to be done so, » purrs Eileyth in your mind. « Exerting your will is not being bossy. It's being a leader. »

Mindvoice

When displeased she is the cold wind of the north, cutting and sometimes cruel; to others she may sound or feel haughty, distant and removed, and this tendency may hue their perceptions of her. When pleased, however, she is gently wry or fond, warm like the fingertip-strokes of a lady too regal to hug but quite willing to stroke and caress. Her words she stretches long, never afraid to take her time in choosing them, drawing out vowels for all the richness they can offer. Eileyth casts her mind-images in grays and pale blues, lighting them with mauve and rose of sunset (or lurid red and gold when rising to mate); these warmer tones are especially for the objects of her secret affections - including, always, you.

==Internal Impression Message==The /presence/ is upon you before it has a name or even a sound. It is beautiful, matchless - a grace no human could ascend to. And then - « You. Girl. » So cold, so distant is this voice - but then its haughtiness slips a little, revealing a deep, mellow secret of affection. « Seliene. You may call me Eileyth. » The affection turns wry, almost teasing. Her external demeanor does not change, absolutely rigid and poised, but within the secret place that you and she now share she jests with you, smiling, already deeply fond. « You will do. »

External Impression Message

Imperial Tea Green strolls, lifting her paws high and keeping her fine little nose in the air, past another string of candidates, all island boys. For them she has nothing, not so much as a sniff or a snort or a hungry glance. Her whirling red gaze is fixed already on another. A few more long, unhurried strides take her to the spot before her chosen one, and at last the prideful green's head bows - not in obeisance, but as if to inspect her selection. She arranges her overgrown wings along her sides like a cloak and waits, poised and prepared for what comes next.

Inspiration

Titania, Queen of the Faerie, as she is portrayed in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream and in art inspired by that work, is "a proud creature," every part her kingly husband Oberon's match and equal. She is also, of course, his rival of sorts; their quarrel in the play regards which of them should have oversight of a child in their care. In various comics published by DC including appearances in _The Sandman_, _The Books of Magic_, and _The Books of Faerie_, their quarrels - and differences - are somewhat greater.

Though Shakespeare's Titania is usually portrayed dressed all in white (or not at all) with snowy skin and blond hair, Eileyth's physical appearance is based more on the green-skinned, seemingly otherworldly Titania of _The Sandman_.

Name: Eileyth - We started with Litha, from a Wiccan word for midsummer, added a flair of William (Shakespeare) and a touch of faery and got the lyrical name Eileyth. Her size of 21 meters is inspired by midsummer, or solstice!

Egg Inspiration: The view out my window when the snow's coming down.
