Strike Egg

Blackness wraps around almost all of this smallish egg. Hints of greater black masses can be seen with hints of deep indigo. Something creeps and is hinted at in those dark fathoms to suddenly erupt across one surface with jagged lines of white so vibrant it is almost violet. A hue that is closest to blue envelopes the coruscating jagged lines as they cross from top to somewhere along the bottom, the intense brightness burying itself in the sand.

The Strike Egg holds still, until suddenly a crack runs around the top with an almost hollow, echoing sound. A small brown head rises, pushing the shell away as he takes his first look at this new world. Unwilling to tolerate close quarters any longer, he blasts his way out of the remaing bits of egg, using tail, wings and talons to quick and efficient effect. Soon he is sitting on shards, goo dripping off his frame, surveying the other eggs and the ring of Candidates with wary look.

Larger Than Life Scoundrel Brown Hatchling

Moving with a certain cocky confidence, this brown seems to have it all figured out. Deep russet cloaks his large form, covering his bulk from sculpted snout to long-taloned feet to wiry tail-tip. His body is uniform in color save for a splash of cream on his chest that reaches for his throat but leaves an odd 'notch' just below his chin. The blackness between the stars darkens the sweep of his wingsails, creeps to coat wingtips with the gleam of midnight's ebony. Built for power, his massive haunches are complemented by wide shoulders and a thick neck topped with blunt-cut ridges. He watches the world from beneath protruding eyeridges; his eyes small, sharp and observant.

Temperament

Keseth is all swagger and confidence, with a sharp and sardonic wit and a never-say-die attitude. When other dragons aren't sure of a new formation, or are concerned about the next InterWeyr gaming event, Keseth is completely self-assured. Everything is going to be just fine for both of you because you're just.that.good. His likely first reaction to the Weyrlingmaster and his dragon: « Where did you dig up that old /fossil/? What's he going to be able to teach us? » Boon and bane both, this confidence may lead to a lack of thorough thought before acting. Keseth will need you to provide balance against his more impetuous moods and his initial easy dismissal of his teachers. While he's often right about his ability to handle himself, sometimes his idea of his abilities is in fact greater than reality and this can lead to situations where he only muddles through by the skin of his teeth. When he does fail, he fails /big/, leading to possibly painful bouts of thicktail when he overestimates the size of his stomach and a raft of injuries from minor to potentially more severe as he navigates the challenges of Weyrlinghood. Flight in particular will be both a time of glory where he can show off natural talent, but full of potential pitfalls if he pushes too hard and brings sprains and strains on himself.

While Keseth can be brash, reckless even, with a sort of careless bravery, he can also be reticent about committing to a plan that seems obviously flawed to him. « Hey wait a minute, I'm in this for the /food/, Jendel, I didn't sign onto to marching into that big old feeding pen to get /trampled/ by some damn herdbeast. » He's very keen to preserve his own hide and yours from any real damage or worse, death. This could make him very reticent about Between too. « Are you sure you got that visualization right, kid? Jumpin' through Between ain't like choppin' llamas, girl, you get that picture wrong and we could wind up comin' out in a rock or the middle of a tree or somethin' and that'd end our trip real quick. » This makes him all the more attentive when there's something important to be learned, especially if it interests him anyway. He's also eager to learn everything as quickly and as well as possible so the two of you can declare your independence once more. It's you and him against the world, you don't need anybody else. Failures and mistakes are a source of irritation, often leading to an effort to avoid blame or responsibilty: « I didn't know that second bucket of meat was going to give me thicktail, it's not my fault! », yet he's not one to give up easily, trying everything, even the most arcane of solutions before giving something up as a lost cause.

This steadfast quality persists into adulthood where it becomes even stronger, borne out by the experiences you and he have been through together. He's got proof that they way you both approach problems /works/ -- most of the time. So he's all the more willing to stick to his guns and bluster his way through things. No reason not to! This often calls for you to be the prudent one, to temper his first impulses and remind him that hey, sometimes blasting your way out of a situation fast and furious isn't always the best approach. Guarded, even with you, though you're certainly the only one he fully trusts, he does not often confide in anyone, preferring to brood or sulk off in a corner pretending like there's nothing wrong. When he does voluntarily open up and share; you know it's serious. With a little persuasion and sweet talking, you can generally convince him to talk if he's in a mood, it's just not his first inclination. Banter and a little rough-cut flirtation are things that he enjoys greatly, but when it comes to stronger emotions, he's easily flustered. He masks his discomfort in bluster, making him no help to you or himself. You may find yourself having to apologize to the odd green or goldrider for your dragon's behavior, playing go-between to smooth over any recent rough patches. While his loyalty to you, to his clutchmates to the Weyr is a certain and steadfast thing, he's oddly embarrassed by it, preferring to make excuses for it. He's not protecting the Weyr because he /owes/ it something; it's just to his benefit since you both Impressed there, live there, and so on.

Wing-wise, as the Interval goes into full swing, he'll be naturally drawn to the exhibition wings and the InterWeyr Games. Keseth's got a natural competitive streak that he shares with some of his clutchmates and nothing pleases him more than getting ready for a good round of games, flamign ropes in fancy formations, solo obstacle course racing against the clock, or flat out racing against other dragons. You name it, if there's a prize to be wong, Keseth is all in to go for it. Search and Rescue is neat too but nothing appeals to Keseth more than doing some fancy flying and he'll pester you endlessly about getting some practice in so they can complete that new obstacle course even /more/ quickly than last time. His prowess with acrobactic flying and speed are two things that he'll never hesitate to brag about, especially to impress the girls: « Me and my Jendel? We're the pair that completed the Weyrleader's Run in /two minutes/. » Keseth will of course expect these facts to be well-known and when they're not he'll be stunned and amazed, maybe even a little defensive or flustered: « Is that fast enough enough for you? »

Females are easy come, easy go in his life and flights are more an occasion to show off his flying skills to impress the lady or any other ladies that might be watching than the are about catching. It's not that he doesn't /want/ to catch, he's just a little leery of the flipside, namely of being caught in turn, of being pinned down by the demands of a green or gold, /especially/ a gold. This is something else that you'll have to work on together, especially given the gender split between the two of you. After all, if he can bond and stick close to /you/, why not a female dragon? It's entirely possible that somewhere out there, there's a green or gold who will just plain captivate him and if that happens, you may find yourself with a lovestruck brown, pining for the unattainable on your hands. He'll want to chase in all her flights, /win/ every time he chases her and show off all his best moves in the sky to impress her in between. This may be something of a trial for you, especially if he never does catch the object of his affection or his feelings aren't returned. As with anything else 'emotional' he'll duck and hide about his feelings, bringing on the brash bravado to cover it all up. No big deal. Should Keseth actually catch a gold and sire a clutch, his attitude spans the range of disinterest and fascination all at once. Deep down, he's really into it all, but he has to cover that up and keep up his facade of blase machismo and pretend like it's all just situation normal, all fine here now, thank you. It'll take persistent encouragement from you to get him to open up and show his softer side a little, show his caring for his mate, for his eggs and eventually his progeny, indulge a little in a bit of paternal pride.

In spite of his general squeamishness about showing real emotion, Keseth actually feels things pretty deeply. He's smart, but relatively uneducated and that extends to emotional know how as well. In your quieter moments together, when he does choose to open up to you, you may be stunned by the roughcut poetry of his soul, the depth of what he thinks and feels, he's just singularly unable to express it all, which is something that the two of you may actually share, a lack of facility with words. Together, you might decide this is something that you want to work on, a joint project to improve yourselves and increase your understanding of each other and your ability to be understood by the rest of the world. Whatever you choose to do, be assure that you'll be doing it together as an inseparable team.

Public Impression Message

Keseth has had enough. The time he spent on the hot stuff gave him a chance to inspect the white-robed Candidates and he's made his choice. Swaggering a little as he goes, showing off his new-found prowess at walking, he marches toward a sturdily built girl with greenish eyes and reddish-brown hair, shoving aside a boy who gets in his way with a bump of his nose. He plants himself in front of her and gives her middle a push with his head, mindless of the glop of goo he just left on her robe. Mine all mine.

Private Impression Message

Bright lights and the heat of the Sands give way to a muffled, dank feeling, almost as if you'd just stepped into a badly-lit room from bright sunlight. There's a sense of consideration that curls your spine and makes your scalp tingle, a curious roaring that starts in your heels and sweeps its way to your head. Then there's a voice, deep baritone and oddly reassuring for all its cocky overtones. « Hey there, kid! Heard you were lookin' for me. » The roaring stops with a sudden breathless jolt, leaving you staring into Keseth's eyes. « Listen sister, there's a hole in my stomach needs filling. I got it covered if you don't, Jendel-babe. »

Mindvoice

Keseth's voice isn't soft or shy. Oh no. A bold baritone is more like it, not necessarily loud but solid. He never hesitates to voice his opinion, using plain words and strong imagery to back it up. No delicate euphemisms or elaborate phrasing for this scoundrel. You're as often 'kid' or 'sister' as you are 'Jendel'. On occasion his voice will soften to a rumbly purr. Over time you'll learn that this happens when his emotions are closest to the surface, when his love for you is at its strongest even if he rarely expresses it in words. When excited, his speech may become loud and brassy, full of whoops of delight, punctuated by odd whooshes and cracks.

Dragon Inspirations

Your Keseth is based off of the fast-talking, fast flying, scruffy-looking nerf -- er suave scoundrel, Han Solo from the Star Wars movies. His swashbuckling, cocksure confidence is match to Jendel's own tomboyish ways, her counterpart, with an introverted streak where his emotions are concerned, as requested. His color is largely inspired by Captain Solo's fuzzy partner, Chewbacca, with elements of the smuggler's clothing (black jacket, cream shirt). Keseth's mindvoice draws on Harrison Ford's own deep, dulcet tones with an infusion of the down-home speak that Solo favored in the first film. The egg chosen reminded us of the tail of the Millennium Falcon, taking off through hyperspace.

Egg Inspiration: The flash of lightning in the middle of the night from clouds so thick and black you can't tell midnight from cloud if you wanted too. A lightning strike seen out in the middle of the wilderness during a thunderstorm. So intense and pure it's blinding.

Name Meaning

His name is loosely drawn from "Kessel", from the "Kessel Run" that Solo completed in 12 parsecs, a reference to Keseth's love of speed and winning the race.
