There may be a wavering quality to the young teal-green dragon, but only when it comes to her wings, those soft sails that shimmer with hazy blue like light seen through warm tropical waters. All else is bright, from the curious wildness in her large, side-set eyes, to the turquoise iridescence that tips each neckridge only to slide into a green closer to gilt along her tail. Even the darker, curved bars down each cheek and lining her ribs only serve to accent her frame and the way she moves: sleek rather than skinny, sporty rather than delicate, accustomed to abrupt darts punctuated by stillness shorter than an eyeblink.

Herschel's Celestial Discovery Egg

Enclosed by loose, diagonal-running belts of colour, this egg gives the dizzying impression of constant motion, the shifting pattern of those hoops lost in hues of malachite and viridian. Greyed undercurrents delve and reappear, wheeling across the shell in great bands. Touch if you dare, for the striking contrast of dark and light gives the illusion of sharpness and that widening succession of rings almost appears to project from the shell itself.

Poke, poke, and then a... gnawing noise? One of the cracks of Herschel's Celestial Discovery Egg widens under the demands of a blunt blue-green muzzle, the dragonet's teeth flashing as she actually bites down on the broken edge of shell to get the leverage she needs. From there, all it takes is a twist of her neck, and she's free.

Temperament

Liath is a creature of joyful swoops and sometimes stillness, rather than anything more regular or plodding. Whenever it's warm enough, she'll be happy to sloth on the shore of the lake, soaking up the sun like a little battery, idly watching the workaholics spin their wheels... until she's had enough, and wants the both of you to go, go, go. You want to enjoy your free and easy lifestyle? She's the dragon for you. You want to shape your own destiny? She's definitely the dragon for you. The only catch is, you might not always share the same exact attitude at the same exact time... ;) When your approaches conflict, she might even tease about tossing you back for some other girl... but it's always ever teasing, and when she stops teasing it's when you know something's really up.

Her tendency toward swoops shows up even while growing up. Though all dragonets undergo physical growth spurts, Liath's are more noticeable than most. Large as a hatchling green, she'll grow more slowly than her clutchmates until she's the smallest green of them all (as if you needed something to worry about!), and then alternate that slow growth with seemingly growing out of her straps overnight until she's small though not the smallest, and more importantly, just right. Speaking of size: in the barracks, she'll like to have a lot of space. If there's a brown-sized couch available for her to spread out in, so much the better! If there's not... she can get pushy. Is Nilanth's tail intruding into her space? What about Khazioth's wing? They just need to get a good nudge, or if that doesn't work, a nip, to remind them. Liath does like to chew on things, especially if she's bored, even if she isn't allowed to gnaw on her clutchmates' body parts. Something about the rhythmic motion is very relaxing. Bones are good, but she'll take whatever gets left lying around, like blankets or clothes, before you learn to teach and redirect her... or just plain pick up after yourself and help others to do the same. It also makes her happy to have the floor neat because, while her paws aren't as sensitive as Elaruth's, she's just bothered by the idea of stepping on things... or, worse, having to be careful. (Yes, she can be daring to the point of recklessness at times. Yes, so can you. Yes, this may mean that you'll have to learn to take care of both of you... or accidents may happen.)

Liath also enjoys a certain amount of push and pull with you. Imagine the two of you in your couch, curled up together. It doesn't really matter who speaks first!

1: I really should get up. 2, all cozy, curling up tighter: Mmm, yes, you should. (Not.) 1: But I don't waaaaant to. 2: Okay, don't. *zzz* 1: All right... *starts to zzz* 2: But if you don't, you won't be able to ___, and I know you want to ___. 1: !!!

Once you get your own weyr, at least cleaning up should be easier. Liath likes colorful decorations (a bright undersea cavern?), and you can clutter up the walls all you like, it's still just the floor that counts. She'll be very interested in what you choose and what makes a place feel like home to you, just like she's interested in what you see in people and what makes them feel comfortable to you. Not that she'll be comfortable in the weyr at first, because like anything else, it takes her a while to get used to changes and then she becomes quite hardy. This process becomes easier when you help her adjust rather than yell at her to hurry up and deal with the new strap arrangement, for example, but by the same token, you may need help to learn enough to keep up with her and her quick mind and quicker turns. (And by a third token, you and she can trade off persuading, "If you do this thing now, you'll be able to do that thing better!") While she far prefers empirical learning to all that thinking that dragons like Mecaith and Orisoth do, or the brute force that Mohraith might try, she'll take results and run with them... even more so if they look like interesting sorts of shortcuts.

When it comes to other dragons, Liath's as friendly and outgoing as you are... as long as they give her space. She doesn't often permit touches, and pity her once her clutchmates learn that stepping on her paws bothers her as much as it does! But play, or even ganging up with others on the poor unfortunates that wind up as their targets, that's all good. She'll enjoy sweeps more if she has a partner to fly with, and the same goes for sitting watch, even if all she can get to keep her company are a pack of firelizards. Maybe they aren't much, to her, but they're better than nothing!

When it comes to flights, Liath has never been a creature of clockwork, and her flights are no different... from the timing, to her moods and what she does, though she may well wind up with her favorites. Unlike most greens, she can be somewhat territorially aggressive while proddy, which can't help you keep your own focus if she's insisting that Jheilinth is eyeing her straps and Jheilinth wants them, she knows she does. After flights, she'll likely go so far as to (shock!) cuddle and even keep her mate in her thoughts as long as she remembers. However, if he winds up showing too much interest in other females... rather than get possessive the way she might have while proddy, she just crosses him off her list of favorites. So there. She doesn't quite understand your love 'em and leave 'em attitude, though. Why not love 'em all, or at least the ones she likes? « R'der is good at rubbing your back, and also mine. Holdboy brushes your hair so nicely. Vanissa, keep them both! » This is especially true if one of your men, or women, has been trained to treat her Vanissa right. Such training should not, in Liath's mind, be wasted.

In the end, your Liath is no wilting violet or floppy fish out of water. She's flashy, and not afraid to flaunt the skills she earns, while still taking time out to indulge in some beach bumming with you. (But not around the tidepools. They make her feel nervous, because there's no way out until the tide comes back.) She's joyful, she's daring, she applies at least a little logic to her impulses, and as much as she might occasionally tease... she's absolutely smitten with you. And with her... it's such an immersive experience, or maybe even subversive experience, it's as though you could breathe underwater... or out in space... or anywhere at all.

Public Impression Message

The Ne Plus Ultra Marine Green hatchling stops short, one long step short of the tawny-haired girl from Nerat. She gives the tips of her wings a dainty flick and looks at the girl, just looks at her, as though there were a line drawn in the sand between them. A heartbeat later, the hatchling arches her neck in all its iridescent and egg-sticky glory, flicks her wings again so a few last bits of shell fall off, and croons in a deep, muffled voice... without moving any closer at all.

Private Impression Message

How could the sands have gotten so hot already? Didn't you just get here? The heat warps the air, you just can't quite see straight, and you can't even feel your feet any longer, just a dull ache that's somehow less important than what's before you. A dragon, halted just one step away. You're not supposed to touch them, you know that. You could get clawed. There's a line right there, before you. You cross it, you could get not only clawed but bitten, or worse. But she's looking at you with those gleaming eyes, somehow radiant and teasing all in one. « Come, Vanissa. » The words in your head are muffled, deep but intelligible, as though she were speaking underwater but somehow you can hear her anyway. « Break the rule. Or, » maybe she means to bend it? Certainly her neck bends, arch as anything, as iridescent as it is egg-sticky. Something in your chest flutters. « I could find some other girl... » And is that desperation you're suddenly feeling, that she just as suddenly senses, and reassures you with her own name in return? « I am Liath. Cross the line. » Because it's all right now. You've a whole new world, now. Her.

Mindvoice

Liath has a plurality to her thoughts that hearkens to Mikhuth's caravan, and a watery element like Elaruth's marshes. Hers are far more salty and tropical, though, a purely underwater realm of shimmering schools of sea-creatures, as experienced through wave-filtered light. For the most part they are brilliantly bright and colorful as she explores her world, the school swimming with a shared sense of direction, though individual clusters might explore different possibilities along the way. Her thoughts might become silvery with reflection, and when she grows conflicted, that also is mirrored in her school, to the point of becoming a chaotic flurry with dismay or even darting away. Often, sharing her mind is like swimming with fish all around you, tickling you, exhilarating... and sometimes there's something sharp-toothed and dark lurking in the recesses of the reefs that's just waiting to surge out and clamp down on your leg. (Or maybe that's just for other people?) When she speaks, her mindvoice is deeper than one might expect from a green, usually echoey or even muffled, and the same is true for her not infrequent physical vocalizations, from trumpet to croon.

Dragon Inspirations

Think of tropical, coastal Brazil, and scuba diving among the reefs with their jagged coral terrain and brilliantly colored fish: sometimes shallow, most often with lots of room to roam, with unexpected crannies or revelations along the way... yet still, where your Liath is, never so deep that sunlight cannot reach. Your Liath is more Fort's Boll than Nerat, not a replica of you but a dear cousin, who enjoys sunny idylls as well as what she can stir up from the depths. Nor is she a delicate memaid, but instead sleek and sporty, with what can be an uncanny instinct for danger. Sometimes, she even avoids it.

Egg Inspiration: Uranus' brightest ring, Epsilon, first observed by William Herschel.
