Living Cavern, High Reaches Weyr

Stalactites hang high above this enormous cavern like a jagged chandelier or an inversion of the Spires themselves, but shadows cling to them instead of light. Below lie great tables arranged in rows, each large enough to serve a fighting wing, while in the nooks and alcoves around the cavern's edge sit more sensibly-sized tables, from six- and eight-seaters down to intimate spots for just a couple of diners. The only really open space is around the kitchen entrance, smelling of food and rarely quiet, and by the nearby serving tables with their long buffet of the day's offerings.

Tapestries on the smooth walls -- some faded and others newly woven -- only slightly mute the sea of sound when a meal is in full swing, but they add cheerfulness augmented by the glowlight from wall sconces and the centerpieces of each table. Still, shadows always creep along the ceiling and into the mouths of the exits -- the myriad small hallways at one end of the cavern and, at the other, the twisting tunnel to the bowl near an array of coathooks and and hatracks -- and late at night, when the glows are allowed to dim, the chamber can seem very dark indeed.

It's early morning, breakfast time, and people are even more abuzz than usual as the panic of an imminent event sets in. Well, not panic, per se, but there's certainly something in the air that has people a little more on edge - more aware. Nicky's there among a group of candidates waiting to get their breakfast before joining the throng of workers that are prepping the Weyr for the party that everyone is sure is right around the corner. He's quiet, holding a mug of klah with one hand, and his plate with another as a busty blonde candidate piles food onto it for him.

Thankfully, a certain someone is still abed. This leaves time for Hana to get a large breakfast in, as the rest of her day is certainly doomed. A hot grain ceral, some melty chease on top, a bread with melted stuff on it and a sweet pastry, topped off with a mug of heavily sweetened tea to one side, all at a table as she makes some notes on a bit of slatboard and a piece of chalk.

While everyone else he's with files off to their table of choice, Nicky gets himself a klah refill - and spots Hana. He winds his way through the throng to her side, slipping into the seat opposite her. "M-morning, miss Hana," he says with soft warmth, settling his plate and mug down onto the table in front of him. "I-I'll just join you f-for a moment, if I m-may? Um... I h-have something for you." And he starts patting down his trouser pockets, trying to find it.

"Hana, Nick," the so-called woman says with a hint of a smile - and a rather less amount of strain that may have peeked through in recent times, "You can join me even without something for me - though I do have to offer you my best wishes for, what rumour says, is going to be the day. I even," she admits, leaning forward slightly with a grin, "spoke with Mave!"

Dropping the M-name surprises Nicky, and he pauses in his pocket-rummaging. "Y-you did? Um... about... wh-what? And, um, th-thanks... I'm k-kinda looking forward to it, wh-whenever it happens." A little wrapped parcel is set on the table; he's even gone so far as to find some pretty fabric and a ribbon to decorate the palm-sized package. It's slid across the table towards Hana, and Nicky's cheeks flush rosily. "I-it's just s-something small, to s-say th-thank you. F-for promising me a dance."

"Well, you did say she was a bookie, didn't you? Or was that Waki?" Hana pauses a moment to try to remember, before lifting a shoulder. "I ended up putting a small 'supporting' amount on you, him, Alida and Kaed," she adds, before peering at the package. Before she opens it, she peeks up, "That wasn't necessary, you know - I consider dancing a gift to both sides. I am slightly in love with the activity, if you didn't notice," she admits, poking fun at herself as she unwraps the package. Once the hair pendant is revealed she absolutely coos. "Ohhh, it's /lovely/! And the colors - you did a wonderful job!" Enthusiasm is the name of the game as she picks it up and tilts it one way then the other to better look at it, and the way the light catches.

"Oh. You s-spoke to her about that." That's a relief! Nicky picks up his klah mug, waiting for Hana to open her gift. He blushes deeper in response to her compliments, biting down on his lip but unable to hide his huge grin. He's pleased that she's pleased. "You s-said you'd wear b-blue or green, so, um, I m-made it in those colours. Um... you d-don't have to wear it, i-if you don't want, b-but it's an, um, e-early apology for wh-when I step on your f-foot."

"Well, we also spoke on other things," Hana says after a moment, with a hint of a grin at the fellow's relief, but she doesn't pry - or say whatelse was spoken about, before shaking her head, "Nope, you made it for me, so I get to wear it tonight - I know just how too, and then you'll just have to deal with me telling everyone you made it. Too bad, so sad," she adds with a grin, then a pout. "Light stepping on, please. Though I am wearing the step-on proof shoes, so I'm not /too/ worried." There is a pause, then she grins. "In fact, if you /really/ want to apologize... can you make sure Mave gets at least one dance? She seems rather nervous about the party, and I think she would appreciate that."

"I'll t-try my best n-not to step at all, miss Hana." Though Nicky doesn't seem entirely confident in his abilities, he does perk up a bit when Mave is mentioned. "Um, Mave p-promised me a dance. I, um, intend t-to claim it... m-maybe twice, if she'll l-let me." His grin takes on a different tone; still warm, still keen, but with something else there, too. "C-can I ask f-for one of the, um, s-slower ones with you, p-please? Um... I-I think I'll do b-better if, um, th-there's no fast whirling about."

"I'd be more than happy with one of those, Nick - and it's Hana," she repeats with a grin, determined to get her way on that, even if she has to repeat this for the next turn. "Good! Very good." Yeah. She totally knows something Nicky doesn't - that's plain by the grin, even as she tries to hide it with her mug. About to go on, one of the other holders - the nanny this time, comes hurrying up. There is some whispering back and forth between the two women, then Hana is giving her breakfast a regretful look. "Well, the dreamer has awoken - hopefully nothing is happening for a couple of hours!" Or more. Carefully picking up her present, Hana stands and beckons the candidate to do the same.

Nicky is oblivious to whatever Hana might know that he doesn't! He gets to his feet when she does, doing so even before he's asked to do so... because that's the polite thing to do, isn't it? "I-if it's all the same, I think miss suits you... Hana." Nicky dips his head and smiles, peeping out from behind the curtain of cocoa-coloured curls that fall forward over his eyes. "H-have a good day, miss?"

Hana shakes her head, "Well, we'll just have to disagree amably, I think," she decides, then adds, "For luck." And then she's repeating an earlier action, though this time he has warning and plenty of time to duck and hide if so needed, "For both of us, because I have at least two people to get ready for today. Possibly four..." Oh Faranath. So doomed.

When Hana rises to kiss his cheek, Nicky coyly leans down to meet her - and then he's rewarded with twoof them! His cheeks are flushed so red that he looks surprised that she didn't burn herself on them, and, in return for the kisses, he wraps his arms around her shoulders and draws her in for a squeezy, gentle hug. "Th-thanks. We all n-need some luck, I think." He lets go of her, backing up a step and grinning shyly. "I'll s-see you at the dance, miss?"

"In flowers and with my dancing shoes on," Hana affirms, and then she's off. Only a portion of her meal left eaten, and stealing the mug of tea with her. She needs /something/ to fortify herself!
