>---< Council Chambers, High Reaches Weyr(#364RIJs) >------------------------<
At the heart of this oblong cavern is its meeting table: a long hardwood
oval with a mirror's dark shine, High Reaches' sigil picked out in lapis
and onyx at its center. Twenty chairs surround it, each softened by an
embroidered cushion that's just a little too stiff for complete comfort --
meetings need to be kept short, after all -- with the chair at the table's
head, facing the ledge, being somewhat larger than the rest.
Interspersed between glowsconces upon the smooth walls, ancient tapestries
depict the territories High Reaches protects in a particularly pastoral
fashion, all fluffy clouds and fluffier llamas, or else fishing crafts
sailing merrily out to sea. Among them is also a natural alcove, its
several wooden shelves primarily stocking fine wines and liquors as well
as the glasses to serve them, though the lower shelves also hold whatever
hidework requires particularly frequent attention.
A narrow wooden door leads to the Records room, while the tunnel that
extends to the weyrleaders' ledge is wide enough for three men to walk
abreast, with just enough kink in it to block the wind.

K'del M 36 6'4" slender, toffee hair, baby blue eyes 2s
Lys F 20 5'5" slender, blonde hair, blue-green eyes 0s It's just another normal day. The Weyr is going about its business and K'del's lunch has been delivered right on time to the Council Chambers so he can have a working lunch. Everything is just as it ought to be. Everything except the weyrling green dragon already looking tremendously guilty as her nose reaches for the tray of scrumptious somethings, tongue seeking to just taste a little tiny bit. The width of the tunnel in is supposed to be for letting more than one person walk in and out at a time, not for little baby dragons to venture inwards! Needless to say, as K'del enters, Evyth is the very last thing he may have expected to see; certainly, he does a double-take. A long pause. And then, "And who do we have here?" Cadejoth, just now alerted by his rider's surprise, extends a tendril of curious thought. The hell? Caught! Suddenly, the young mind is a maelstrom of self-reproach and apology. Evyth knew she wasn't supposed to come inside. She knew it, but there was a smell, a smell, Cadejoth! Can he smell it now? Her mind drifts a little as she experiences it all over again and her tongue laps her maw in spite of herself. At least she's not reaching for the tray anymore. No, now she's hunkering down, head ducking, looking just so sorry, only daring to steal a glance at the-- oh, gosh, yes, he's the Weyrleader, and she? She's embarrassed. (There might also be a glimpse of sudden panic as someone else registers all these feelings and comes running.) (To Cadejoth from Evyth) "Oh for-- no, no, it's fine," comes K'del's words, as his bronze shares with him that maelstrom; he closes his eyes and shakes his head, as if that might do well to clear it. "Evyth, is it? It's fine. Bet it smelled pretty good." But he's still standing there, and that is slightly awkward; what next? From Cadejoth: « Shhh, it's fine. He's not mad. But don't you prefer your meat fresh? » He shares the sense of it: blood still pumping, still warm, so perfectly prepared just on its own. Evyth's lift of her head is hesitant. She'd like to believe he's not mad, only, isn't she breaking rules? Aren't people mad when rules get broken? And there's that whole panicking lifemate in her head not helping reassure the little green. She does make an affirmative sort of sound at her name. To Cadejoth, she worries. It's fine? Lys doesn't think so-- is Cadejoth sure? He's-- they're the weyrleaders and-- and-- She manages to heave a deep breath and calm herself just a smidge. « I do, but Lys likes these things and when I asked her about her lunch she said it was so good and that she would bring me some, and I tried to wait-- I even came to meet her, only then I smelled it and it smelled-- and-- » here she is. Shortly, here Lys is too, thought the weyrling is winded from what must have been an all out sprint from the living cavern. "Evy," first with a puff of grabbing air and tone of restrained horror. "Sir," squeaked and followed with a cough of air striking the throat wrong. « It's only bad when it hurts something, » is Cadejoth's opinion on the subject of rules, which is probably not something that Olveraeth or his rider would appreciate his saying (come to mention it, K'del might not either, but then, K'del's the one who isn't mad right now so... who knows?). « And you were hungry. It's not fun when they leave us. » He doesn't remember his own separation anxiety from those long-ago weyrling days, but K'del does, and there's a sense of that now: that once it was something worth howling over. As Lys arrives, K'del takes a step to the side, hastily reassuring her, "It's fine. No harm done. Should've been more on time for my own lunch." If Cadejoth is sure, Evyth can be too. Relief floods her and the plaintive croon goes to Lys who moves briskly to her lifemate's side to take her face in her hands and give an assessing look. She might've hurt herself coming in or something while she was out of Lys' sight. The blonde's cheeks are bright with her own embarrassment. "I'm so sorry, sir. I thought she was waiting for me in the barracks." « It is so very unfun when they leave us, » Evyth agrees with a measure of babyish misery. « Lys says it's important for us to bond with the others, and I don't not like them, but I just want to be with Lys and now she goes places I can't and-- » It's no fun. Sad even. That's awful, is Cadejoth's sentiment, even if he doesn't put it into words. The emotions are all there; he may not be the howling little bronze hatchling he once was, but he feels it, even now. « It's better once you get a little bigger, » he reports. « Because there's more you can do together. Like flying. » "No, no-- uh, it's fine." K'del may not actually remember Lys' name, though he certainly does recognise her. Now that she's moved to her dragon, K'del is free to step around towards the other side of the table, giving both weyrlings some space. "It happens. She didn't do any harm. I'm sorry you were dragged from your own lunch." Evyth's mental sigh of longing is echoed in her body. « Flying! I can't wait! » Even though she'll have to, being as yet still smaller than her rider is tall. « We do a lot together, but it's sad that it's not everything. I just-- love being with her. She's the best. » The green's mind practically glows with the resolve of that sentiment. "Uh," is awkward, but not because she expects to be remembered but rather that the weyrling doesn't seem sure if she should offer her name. "Lys, sir. You told me stories with Farideh when the-- when there was a cave in." She releases her dragon's face and latches fingers around a headknob to help direct her back away from the table, the lunch and the weyrleader. "I'm sorry we intruded in yours, sir. I'm sure you're-- very busy. I was nearly done anyway, wanted to get back to her." It's a bit of a babble as the two take slow steps in retreat, the green confused, the rider still embarrassed. "Lys," repeats K'del, once, and then again more firmly; it's his turn to look just faintly embarrassed, because yes, of course he remembers. "Of course. It's good to see you--" Well? Happy? Embarrassed? In general? He doesn't specify further. "But-- no. It's fine, honestly. It really is. She looks like she's growing well. From Roszadyth's clutch, isn't she?" Cadejoth, just quietly, understands all of these sentiments. « K'del's the best too, » he confides. « But differently to the way yours is the best, I think! We don't get to do everything together, but when we do... » His tail might well be wagging in pure, unadulterated happiness. It's habit that Lys stills and drops into the unobtrusive stance that is probably most familiar to her because of the location. "Thank you, sir," spares him any need to decide an adjective. "Yes, she is," comes with quiet pride. "She really is-- she meant no harm, truly. She's very sweet and thoughtful and kind, just-- follows her nose and belly perhaps more than she ought," not that Lys would call that a flaw, of course. Evyth is just thrilled to be sharing this confidence with Cadejoth. « I am so glad, » and she really is, for him, for his lifemate, for their togetherness. « He seems very nice, even if he scares Lys, just a little. She's not used to him. » "She's beautiful," says K'del. "And truly, it really is fine. I'm not fussed-- you're sure you've eaten enough? There's bound to be more than I need on that plate, and if she's still curious..." But he's also not standing in the way of the door; perhaps that goes without saying. « He is nice, » loyal Cadejoth agrees. « And so is yours, I bet! He doesn't meant to scare her or anyone, not most of the time. Not unless he has to yell at them, and that always makes him sad. » "Thank you," has the shy humility of one who's unused to compliments she can accept. Lys looks down to her dragon and the look is more than fond, her fingers sliding a gentle caress around her knobs. "I don't know that we should linger. If we do and someone sees us and tells the Weyrlingmaster..." Who knows what could happen. That doesn't stop Evyth from taking a step back toward the food, since he's offering. Lys' eyes close briefly. "Would you mind sparing a taste for her? She doesn't take much-- it's never as good as she interprets from my reactions that it should be, but it doesn't stop her interest in trying, in hoping." An optimistic dragon! « Well, mine can be nice, but she's also sometimes prickly, but it's usually okay, though I don't always understand why she is. She is very good about trying to explain to me and she is always very kind to me, » which should count for something, Evyth expects. « I hope he won't need to yell at Lys. She's very good, when she tries. And she always wants to make Irianke proud. » This should count for something too, she thinks. "No, no, of course. Wouldn't want to incur Quinlys' wrath, absolutely. But-- yes. Of course. Take what you like. Whatever she wants." K'del presses his mouth into a smile, sure and firm and (hopefully) not too intimidating. Cadejoth seems to think that counts for a lot; he's amused, if anything, and pleased. It's better when they're nice to their dragons. They ought to be, because how can they not? « It's good when they want to make people proud, too. It makes them work harder. It makes... I like the Weyr being proud. It's my Weyr. Everyone should be happy and proud. » "Thank you," this time is polite and Lys steps to carefully use the utensils to remove a small portion of the meat and put it into her hand to offer to Evyth who eagerly takes it, chewing and savoring even if there's a little disappointed exhale. "She appreciates it," sort of belies the sentiment, but both could be true. « It's your Weyr, » Evyth agrees, « it's mine too, » and she's so happy for that. « I like it here. So does Lys. You do, don't you? » Nevermind that she rather answers herself, « Of course you do, you're the weyrleader. » How silly of her! « Tastes better raw, huh? » Cadejoth is clearly watching the scene through his rider's eyes, and seems amused by this reaction. « But yes. It belongs to all of us. This is home. » No where else, he promises, lives up to High Reaches. How could it? « I'd never fly for anyone else. » "Mm," agrees K'del. "She's most welcome." « Yes, » is admitted with a sigh of defeat. Evyth never remembers that though, not until she's had a bite. "Come on Evy, we've taken up too much of the Weyrleader's time," comes Lys' quiet instruction. "Thank you again, sir, for-- everything." Being understanding, the food, the not telling Quinlys. She gestures to the green, but rather than head for the door, baby Evyth makes a bouncy break for K'del to give him her own thanks in the form of trying to butt her head against his hand and crooning warmly, even as Lys' startled "Evy," chides her for not heading for the door. K'del, because he's a nice person and can't help himself, immediately leans down to give Evyth a good, proper scritching. "She's fine," he reassures Lys. "You're both fine. It was good to meet you properly, Lys and Evyth. Look after yourselves, okay?" « You can talk to me any time, » Cadejoth promises. « I'll try and remind you. » Evyth is delighted, and her rider is torn between relief and probably what she imagines duty requires of her. "Thank you, sir," again, and "we'll try. You too," it might be odd, but this was Irianke's assistant who knows a thing or two about how the leaders care (or don't have time to care) for themselves. Evyth reluctantly leaves this experienced hand at scritching to bounce along out, slowing as she has to navigate the fairly tight tunnel, Lys following behind as brisk as she can manage. |
