The Hold harper, an aging man with no aspirations to return to his Hall, studied the door where the bronzerider had just exited. There was something disarming in the way he had asked questions of the Hold's lineage and family trees, that had made Wilem speak more than he had exactly wanted to.

He had answered as best as he knew. Faranth only knew how often those particular bound tales had been open and perused through and having not the patience of a saint, Wilem had recalled only the most recent of the lineages, but something...

Something had sparked enough for him to find himself hauling out the plain and dusty tomes to read of the first born, a golden-haired son named Braeden, to Rynien of High Reaches and Shaie of Sattle. He turned a page and blew more dust off before reading further. Rynien, first born, golden-haired son of Joryen of High Reaches and . (Lord)

The old harper paused, watery eyes squinting at the carefully blocked out text, then lifted the bound hides to the light to try and read through, failing. Whoever had redacted the text had done a thorough job, wiping the blight off the Reaches family tree and lineage. 'Perhaps,' he mused attempting to recollect the incident that had caused such a wipe, 'The young lady had gone crazy.' A fully justifiable reason to wipe her from the family tree, surely. Further siblings to Rynien were named as the children of Joryen of High Reaches and Patella of Balan.

He turned another page:

Joryen, first born son of Derako of High Reaches and Molleene of South Telgar. (Lord. Deceased.)

And before that:

Derako, second born son of Beradin of High Reaches and Tamien of Tillek. (Lord. Deceased.)

A beat passed by as Wilem considered this entry and then the one just above it:

Dreshan, first born son of Beradin of High Reaches and Tamien of Tillek. (Disinherited. River Bend. Deceased)

Through pressed lips, Wilem gazed down upon the script. His own as a posted journeyman. Memories long pushed aside resurfaced and the old man let loose a sigh. He no longer had to turn pages to remember. To know that the next few pages were missing. Missing or redacted much like the poor Lemosian girl who had the misfortune to marry Joryen of High Reaches.

The master's knot along his arm shifted, as if recognizing the heavy weight that had suddenly settled on its owner's shoulders, a weight further increased by the reminder of his rank and how it had come at a far too costly price.

Resolved, Wilem began left the records chambers for his own, a room he had owned for nearly a century. Much like the others involved, his time, too, would be coming all too soon.

From a locked chest tucked beneath his bed, Wilem withdraw a set of aging hides, unfolding them reverentially and looking at the top one.

Henret, first born son of Radiel of High Reaches and Mimet of High Reaches. Second cousins, harper approved. (Holder, River Bend) ... ... Dinami, third born son of Radiel of High Reaches and Mimet of High Reaches. (Healer) ... Jiesa, first born daughter of Henret of River Bend and Dyana of Misty.

The place next to Jiesa had never been filled. But with the recent meeting and signet ring fresh in his mind, Wilem began to complete each line. Jiesa, deceased. Her brothers and sisters, exiled and likely deceased. Her father, exiled and deceased. Her mother, exiled and deceased. He worked well into the morning in order to try and complete River Bend's lineage.

It took another seven to work through all the other pages stolen from the fires.

He had no plans to share his work quite yet, unsure even, of how to broach the subject with anyone. The young masters running the Hall now would not quite understand the decisions made turns before their time. The Lord Holder would not appreciate the smear on his family's name, and as for River Bend... Wilem paused to consider the hold once a large part of his riding (back when he could ride). He shook his head, and in that instant, made up his mind.

Sliding his work into an envelope and sealing it with his seal, Wilem wrote on the outside: [ To be delivered to High Reaches Weyr upon my death. ]

The Weyr would be a neutral third party, once again. Some day.
