Another evening, another day of work done and over with. And, yet another meal of the very same old thing. It's a wonder the people here don't die of sheer boredom. That's why as quick as she could shovel her food in, Emme's divested herself of dishes and gone seeking out Evali. Her eyes dart over the mass of people gathered and she begins winding her way through the crowd.

Evali didn't make the food tonight. Which is why it does not consist of things like 'every plant ever chopped into small bits with a broth.' She's nibbling on a forkful of fish off in a corner somewhere, but is easy to find due to that distinctive coat, hood pulled up. So she really looks more like a piece of fabric leaning over a plate.

But a familiar piece of fabric! Emmeline plops herself down beside Evali just as if she'd actually been invited to sit there. "Enjoying the food? No wait, dumb question. Nobody enjoys the food." she decides, pullin a blanket around herself while she waits for the other girl to finish her food.

Khorde could die of sheer boredom -- but he still has a right hand. Chop that off and... well, it could happen. (He likes drawing in the sand, you /perverts/.) He is busy, currently, shoveling food into his maw, sullen expression on his face and eyes firmly fixed into the distance. That is, until Emmeline sits across from him -- Evali was already there, but she's, you know, /quiet/. His dark gaze focuses upon the teacher for a moment, still going through the fixed motions of eating.

"Well, it's here," Evali points out diplomatically enough, which has the unfortunate side effect of her not being quiet any longer. Sorry, Khorde. "So that is, at least, something." She shows no objection to Emmeline sitting there, and even gives her a smile, which from Evali is as good as being invited.

Also seated nearby is Jaques, working his way through his meal methodically. The voices of those his own age, though, pulls his attention that way, and he points out, "I like it better than not having any."

"Well, hello there Khorde. How nice to see you again. How have you been?" Emmeline of course asks the questions just because she knows Khorde isn't all that fond of her. So, she has to push a few buttons. "True enough, that. But do you really *like* it?" she wonders, glancing over at Jaques with a grin. "Hey, when you're done could you do me a favor and check on the progress I'm making? I mean... later, that is." the harper amends, assuming that Evali will know what, exactly, she's talking about.

Khorde points to Jaques with his fork. "What he said." Damned women, always bitching. He stares off into the horizon for a long moment -- two, even. "Hi, Emme." It's belated, significantly so, but he acknowledges her existence. "I'm alive. How are you? I can't tell over all that chatter." His dark eyes are more sullen than malicious -- everyone gets to keep their brains... today.

Evali watches the exchange silently, as per usual, and makes the appearance of not passing any judgment on anyone and simply eating. "At least there is food," she agrees, but Emme gets a secret little smile and a nod. "Of course. Later. Yes. You can come by, if you want. I don't have appointments."

"Poor thing, must be difficult to be unable to concentrate on more then one thing at a time." Emme retorts, her lips curving up into a smile when the words are out. "But I'm just fine. It's sweet of you to ask." Look, there's even a dimple when she grins. "Thanks Evali. I appreciate the extra time. Are you /sure/ there's ntohing I can do in return? Really?"

Khorde glower. It's as effective as a giant roasted marshmallow glowering, but hey, the effort is still pointing in the right direction, right? "I'm good at concentrating when it's important," he lazily replies, not finding enough oomph past glowering to do much of anything. His plate is clean, but he doesn't move just yet, zoning out again. Someone's had a long day.

Evali looks hesitantly at ... her plate. It holds all the answers. "Don't worry about it," she says eventually. "You're my brother's friend and I'm happy to help." The idea of someone being /her/ friend is, even at nineteen, still rather foreign. "Are you always in a terrible mood?" she asks after Khorde, but it's in a gentle sort of way that belies that it's really just a question with no intent.

Emmeline can't help it - she laughs. "Oh Khorde, don't be like that." He's going to anyway of course, but at least she stops taunting the poor fellow. For now. "Wait... wait. Evali, you're my friend as well. I would /never/ presume on my friendship with your brother." she assures, not offended but... concerned. "How about we just say, for now, that I owe you an unnamed favor alright?" She lowers her voice now, considerably, nudging the other girl lightly in the arm. "You're really the /only/ person I've been speaking with about this. It means a lot." ANd as for Khorde being in a terrible mood? She's all smiles again at that. "Yes, he is."

"You guys always speak in code?" There's Khorde, moody as always. Sarcasm cracks with his voice, and embarassment flushes his cheeks as he stares down to the sand for a long moment. Evali's question brings him back to the here-and-now, though, and he hunkers his head down between his shoulders. "Yeah, guess so." His return is short, and he follows it by rising, heading towards the wash bin. "Want me to take your plates?" Look. He has MANNERS. Surprise, surprise.

Evali blinks confusedly up at Khorde -- not because of the comment about the plates, which doesn't surprise her at all, and she nods and holds hers out, but due to the other remark. "Code? No. We're speaking in words." She doesn't sound sarcastic, either. "And I -- okay." Emmeline gets another nervous smile.

"What part sounded like code?" Emmeline wonders, proferring a smile towards him when he offers to take their plates. "That'd be nice of you. Thank you." she replies, handing it over with a polite nod, and grateful expression. He -does- have manners. She is duly impressed. "Okay, nothing. Do you really not feel like you have any friends?" This is like, the island catastrophe of the day in the harper's little world. "Tomorrow's a rest day for the kids with their lessons. You'll come with me for the day then, unless you're really all booked up with patients."

Calloused hands collect Evali's plate, incredulous eyes scanning the girl's face at her guileless words. To Emmeline, Khorde's eyes cut swiftly, and he scowls again. "The part where you're talking about going and seeing her later and she doesn't have any appointments and-- gee, I don't know, something about favors?" He takes her plate, though, and skulks off a few paces to rinse them and leave them for the scrub committee.

"I'm not used to it," Evali tells Emmeline -- and, well. She's telling Khorde too, really. He's there. "The idea of having friends; I've never been very social?" She's also been very hesitant and inclined toward uptalking most of her life. That has not faltered even a little. "Well. Those are words. Secrets aren't the same thing as speaking in codes."

"You just ate, Khorde. Believe me, you don't want to know what I was referring to." Emmeline promises her tone rough, yes, but not censorious. And as if by habit when discussing the topic, she grips the blankets closer around her arms, like she's warding off a chill. "Well, we'll have to get you used to it then. I imagine you would get along well with Ani, and she's been working with the kids to help me. So maybe she can get together with us too." The more people she can introduce Evali to in order to make friends with the better, right?

Freeze. "Are you /pregnant/?" Owl-eyed, Khorde can just stare at Emmeline as if she's about to sprout a baby through a weird growth on her forehead, maybe.

Evali shakes her head, smile sprouting up yet again. "I was actually afraid that if I said it was business he might assume that," she explains quietly, "which is why I did not, in fact, say that. To my knowledge the answer is no." If it were uncertain or yes, Evali wouldn't have said anything, making her response even more credible.

"Oh for..." Emmeline trails off, resting her forehead against Evali's shoulder - probably to collect her temper and her wits - prior to saying sometng she might regret. LIke 'Sure, Khorde, and it's /yours/. Don't tell me you forgot!'. That would lead to no end of problems, even though the words are right there. Right at the tip of her tongue, because of the look on his face. "Of course the answer is NO. I am /not/ pregnant." Deep breath in, deep breath out.

"Oh." There's hardly a beat. Okay, a pause, a highly uncertain one, as reflected by the stance of shoulder and hip and puzzled furrow of brow. "So you guys are... like.. /together/?" He can't help the fact that he flushes again, this time in an entirely different manner. What? There's a lot of unnecessary bodily contact, see: Emmeline's forehead against Evali's shoulder.

Evali had just been starting to pat Emmeline on the head when Khorde speaks again, and her eyebrows make their way toward the skies. "That's an interesting color on you," she says, and then, "Also no, and probably also stop guessing, because you'll exhaust yourself."

"I..." Emmeline is /speechless/. There really is afirst time for everything. And so simply because she can't seem to think of anything else to say, she lets the blanket fall away from her shoulders and rolls up her left sleeve mutely. There. Now Khorde can see for himself that all she's going to Evali for is the scarring on her arm. SHe's hopeful this will stop any rumors. And once he's had a good gawk, she just shoves her sleeve back down. Again, mutely.

"That doesn't answer my question," Khorde retorts to Evali, but when Emmeline is shocked speechless and then scar-showy, his flush turns to a blanch in zero point zero zero seven seconds. Super agent awkward man, that would be Khorde. "Oh." So lame. "Sorry. Is that... are you... I mean. Are you okay?" Talk about being off-kilter.

"I had said no," Evali points out. Saying no did answer his question, didn't it? And then she figures she's supposed to answer that, too. She cannot possibly know if Emme is actually okay, but she can speak to not being in any danger: "It's healed right."

"I guess that depends on what you mean by okay." Emmeline finally replies, allowing another moment of awkward silence to permeate the scene. "So, obviously... I'm not pregnant, and I'm not "special friends" with Evali. Friends, yes. More, no. So let's not allow strange rumors to go floating around please." Attempting to keep her humiliation out of her voice, the words are a little... shall we say, strained. But look, there's her smile again. "So... wow, ok. I think maybe it's time I went and got some sleep. Evali... you still on for tomorrow? Khorde, sorry about the confusion."

Khorde shuffles back a step or two. "No, no, by all means, I didn't mean to--" Awkward. "I'm sorry." He blurts this out before anyone has a chance to think oh hey, maybe Khorde's showing some maturity (since that would be insane), and darts off with springy steps intent on /getting him away/ -- which they do, after all.

Evali offers Khorde nothing but a wave -- she was going to say he was forgiven, but of course, he vanished already! People move so quickly. "I -- am, yes, of course. Some people are so odd," she adds, watching after Khorde's departure and then says, "My turn to walk you home, sleepy?"

"It's alright Khorde, I sh...." And off he goes! "Hmm, yes, so they are." Emmeline agrees, as puzzled as anything else. "You know, that sounds like a good idea. Lest I fall right over on my way back to the my hut." she jokes, trying to make small talk, that isn't awkward, all the way home.
