It was evening, and the through the window over the sea, a chill breeze came in. If Issedi had been alive, she would've come in, scolded him, and shut the window.

If...

But she wasn't, and he liked the scent of the sea. It reminded him of home.

Devaki dipped the quill in the liquid and wrote, tightly and carefully, on the hide.

Your ship waits for you, as do I. We will be setting sail as soon as you and what's left of your crew arrive. Use my name if you require a ride dragonback. I look forward to seeing you soon. -D

He rolled the hide up, tightly, and called Sea to him. The green firelizard had been distracted lately -- she'd rise soon, he thought, disappearing off for a couple of days the way she always did, her eggs never found. He tied the message to her, and thought of Itsy; not the ratty street kid that was, but the grown woman, her dreadlocks, her distinctive hat. The thought of her made him smile. Maybe she'd even come to dinner again, before they left. The thought was in his head as he sent Sea off to find his little erstwhile pirate.

On cue, there was a knock on the door.

Kiatan came in, followed by Evie. The ex-wife of his cousin, Jaques -- they hadn't had a great deal of direct contact since her husband stayed at the Weyr with his dragon, though Devaki had kept a close eye on her. He didn't mess about:

"Shimana is retiring to the Island. She'll be travelling with me and the children when we sail. We agreed that you should be her replacement on my council."

Evie stared at him, for a beat, then nodded, once.

"I'll need you to keep an eye on things while I'm gone. On the others."

Evie hesitated a moment, then said: "Dev. Take your children. Go. The Hold will be here when you get back."

With an exhale, Devaki smiled -- the expected smile, and with a glance at his steward, Kiatan expertly steered the other islander out of the room.

Devaki rose, and walked to the window, trying to breathing in deeply, yet feeling oddly short of breathe. Timor and Belior were faint lights, just enough to see the roll of the waves crashing against the beach.

He would leave the youngest with Aunt Edeline; safer, he felt, than Uncle Tomaeran, even if he was family. That would be his next letter. And then it would be onto the Islands.

Maybe, there, he could finally breathe.
