>---< Bathing Pools, High Reaches Weyr >-------------------------------------<
Omnipresent clouds of steam slink across the tops of three naturally warm
pools, set into the floor of this kidney-shaped cavern. Near the entrance
the ceiling is high and polished, gleaming with little mineral specks as
it sweeps downward into increasingly ragged, uneven steps. The foremost of
the pools is squared off with wide steps leading down into the water and
has faucets for bringing in cooler water from a rain-catching cistern.
Primarily used for laundry, there's an almost constant film of suds along
its surface until the circulating current clears it at the end of the day.
Four sinks line the nearest wall and various tubs stored beneath allow for
the washing of delicates. Laundry bags can be dropped off in the bins near
the door and clean, folded laundry is stacked in rows of tall cubbies for
easy pickup.
The bend in the cavern leads to a rougher-hewn part of the chamber where
the two circular bathing pools welcome those in need of a wash. Towels and
washcloths are kept in neat stacks on shelves along the wall, along with
sacks of sweetsand and a few bars of precious soap. Stone benches provide
a place for sitting to remove shoes and clothing, while a row of gleaming
brass hooks stand above, ready to hold clothes and robes.

Inner Caverns
>-------------------------------------< 28D 1M 37T I10, winter afternoon >---< Even in winter the ever present steam rises in the bathing caverns, the air heavily scented with aromatic soaps and oils. Floating with her hair fanned loose about her like a dark halo, Edyis is near the deeper end of the pool. Taking full advantage of the only sparsely populated cavern in the wake of day-after gold flight hangovers. That thick, humid air seems a relief to Laine, who presently shuffles in through the entrance with a towel slung around her neck and big mug of water in her hands. It takes a few laborious moments to get undressed--accompanied by a few winces when she's got to bend over to tug off her boots--but eventually she makes her way to Edyis' end of the pool. She slips into the water nearby, sighing a long sigh of satisfaction once she's sunk in chin-deep, eyes closed, fingers massaging her temples. She even manages to croak out a "don't mind if I float here, do you?" to Edyis. Edyis dark eyes open immediately as the former scribe hears the words, though it's possible she was listening to the footfalls preceding them. "Of course not. It is the public caverns." She adjusts so that her feet reach to the base of the pool, turning to study the woman. It only takes a moment for recognition to set in. "Laine right?" Laine cracks an eyelid. She meets Edyis' gaze groggily, but musters up an unsteady smile. "Mhm. And... Edyis?" That half-lidded look from slate grey eyes might as well be a squint as Laine paddles over to the edge of the pool and retrieves her nearby mug of water. "Didn't mean to interrupt your swim." Her eyebrows perk slightly; she tips her head toward Edyis and comments, "all the power to you if you're not feeling the after-effects of... whatever that madness was. Last night." She grins, a bit wryly. The copper-skinned woman grins. "There is a trick to getting through it. I spent a day on a beach drinking rum with some old friends from Monaco." Completely unrepentant for missing the chaos as she tugs her hair over one shoulder. "How about you? If the way you look and sound is any indication..." She smirks. Schuyler enters the baths humming softly to himself. He heads over to the benches and disrobes, neatly handing his clothes on a hook and placing his shoes in a cubby. He hasn't quite noticed yet that there are others in the bathing area as he snags himself a towel and some sweetsand for scrubbing. Laine's mouth forms a little 'o' of surprise and she squeaks, surprise tinged with something like accusation, "that's brilliant! You get away from the snow and the crazies." She takes a long draught from her mug then leans back in the water, scrubbing her free hand through her short, upright hair. "M'okay. Drank too much, but," she wiggles the mug, "water'll cure that. Eventually." Laine's thick dark brows knit inward, for an instant, and she groans, "wish there was a cure for stupid behaviour, though." But she doesn't elaborate, sparing a look over her shoulder at Schuyler as he enters. Edyis laughs cheerily. "I did think it was quite the stroke of genius if I do say so myself." Her eyes lift to Schuyler's entrance before she shakes her head, attention returning to Laine. "The only cure for that is either enough booze to kill the memory, or enough time to become old and senile I am afraid. Usually, people seem pretty accepting of it was a stupid flight and I wasn't myself. Schuyler spots the girls in the pool and gives a grin to Edyis. "Hey there Edyis, nice to...see you again." he grins as he heads into the pool, placing his towel and sweetsand on the edge. He doesn't add anything to the interupted conversation, but he does give a nod of greeting to the other girl. "'lo there." Laine peers into her mug (of, ostensibly, water) and considers the options presented by Edyis. Hm. Booze. Ultimately she decides, "I think I'll just spend the next turn ducking behind doors and hiding behind friends every time I see the individual in question." She schools her expression into one of mock-consternation and turns round eyes up at Edyis, "I'm gonna need some taller, fatter friends." And suddenly, there's Schuyler, and Laine tips back to take in his height. How convenient! Laine decides: "hm. You'll do. Hi; be my embarrassment shield." She grants him a lazy grin, and takes another long drink from her mug. Edyis snorts, at mention of taller and fatter. She laughs though, when Laine arbitrarily announces Schuyler will have a new occupation. "Didn't expect to run into you again so soon." She returns to Sky, before weighing in on Laine's assessment. "He is about the right size for it I imagine." Though dark eyes drift over to Laine curiously. "Just tell me it wasn't the guy collecting debt. Granted if it was I don't think he will be too keen on pestering you again." Schuyler raises an eyebrow at the pair. "I dare you to find any fat here..." he smirks as he steps closer. "And...just what am I being volunteered for?" he asks. "Well, it's a welcome surprise to see you, if unexpected." he smiles at her and winks. "Oof, no," If she wasn't so hungover, Laine would be emphatically shaking her head at Edyis. Instead, she smirks. "Guess I've been honing my hide-and-seek skills lately. I'll pay him back, eventually," she breezily remarks, as a side note, (not that anyone cares). The apprentice tanner lifts those dark brows, glancing back and forth between Edyis and Schuyler, before settling on the latter. "You're to follow me around and let me hide behind you as I see fit. I'll pay you in--" oh, she pauses, considering her so-recent declaration regarding how seriously she takes her debts. Finally, lamely: "--affectionate shoulder-punches? C'mon. It'll be fun." Edyis says, "I... will take your word for it Sky." She's smirking just a touch at his expense perhaps. "We all have our debts I suppose, I don't care one bit if you pay him or not." Laughing now. "See friendly shoulder punches, better than being paid in the other kind!" Schuyler raises an eyebrow at the two. "Well, I don't have much time...but if you're ever in need of a bodyguard and I'm around you're welcome to me." he winks at the other girl this time. He sinks into the water and ducks under for a moment to wet his hair. Edyis grins, climbing out of the pool, "I think I will leave you two to discuss the details? I have a shift I'm going to be late for." Dressing and quickly taking off. Laine does a little victory pump of her fist, and grins. "Friendly shoulder punches are the currency of the new world," she announces. There's a wriggling finger-wave and a smile for Edyis' departure. While Schuyler dunks himself, Laine sets down her mug and does likewise; when she emerges and shakes herself, her short hair is splayed in all directions, defying gravity. "I might take you up on that offer," she laughs to the man. And for Schuyler, a name: "Laine. Hi." Schuyler waves Edyis off and he settles into a spot next to Laine. "Schuyler, or Sky if you perfer. Baker by trade." he offers a hand to shake. "Nice to meet you Laine." he grins. She accepts that profferred hand, shakes. "Likewise." Laine's looking a bit rough around the edges; her eyes are red and as she leans back in the water, she rubs at her temples with one hand. This might be what's prompting her to ask: "And how did you fare, Schuyler? Y'know. Last night." She jerks a chin toward the ceiling, in case her meaning's not clear: the whole gold flight thing. Schuyler must be used to seeing a few of the more hung over folks as her eyes don't seem to phase him. A smirk crosses his lips. "Well, there are quite a few nice girls in the kitchens..." he smirks. "And...well...there's one who didn't have any complaints this morning." he winks. "How about yourself?" "First one," she answers, as if that explains anything. Laine wobbles her head back and forth, indecisively. "Drunk. Got drunk. That's how I fared. Did some stupid stuff," she admits with a roguish grin. "S'why I needed someone to hide behind, in case I ever see anyone who witnessed my foolishness." Her pale cheeks pink a bit for Schuyler's frankness, but she doesn't lose that smile. "Congratulations," with a laugh. Schuyler ahhhs at her comment. "Weyrbred myself...they don't really phase me much...but I do enjoy the end result." another wink. "Aww, don't you worry your pretty head about that. Everyone was a bit foolish." he teases. "You and everyone else," Laine chuckles. "Except us poor crafters and holders. I think I'm lucky," she says with a one-shouldered shrug. "Tanner hall's not quite as uptight as some of the other ones. So the shock wasn't so big." But that emphasis on 'so' leaves room: still some shock. Laine shakes her head, wryly says, "easier said than done, forgetting about it. But. The reassurance is appreciated." Schuyler nods. "Those who care are far more concerned about their own actions than yours...and those that don't care...well.. don't." he grins. "Tanners huh? You get a lot of riders out that way then, with all the leather they need?" he asks, grabbing a bit of sweetsand and starting to scrub. "There are a lot of non weyr folk about these days...but really, it's just something you need to accept here." She nods, too; wise words! This is punctuated by Laine paddling at the water, sloshing over to her little bag of sweetsand at the edge of the pool. She scoops some out and makes her way back, agreeing, "mhmm. Lots of straps to sort though. I'm actually been here a turn, now," she begins, and chatting with Schuyler, the tanner apprentice will linger a while in the pool, washing and nursing her hangover, until she's got to head back to work. Those straps won't tend themslves! The two banter for a while until kitchen duties and tanning duties call them both away. |
