Lower Caverns, High Reaches Weyr

Jaeni bustles into the these caverns from another set of caverns, hair a wet mass piled on top of her head. "Stupid Aleudre... left me alone... I swear..." She blonde mutters and complains all the way through, arms wrapped protectively around herself. Still huffing and puffing the whole way, she finds herself by the staircase the leads upstairs. She sighs, and sits down on them, cradling her chin and setting her sights on the ceiling.

All that muttering gets Leova's attention, or maybe it's more the name she mutters. Seated cross-legged in what's ordinarily a noisy corner but this time of night is quiet, at first she turns away from the complaining, but when even that stops, something about the way Jaeni's sitting tempts her. Closing her tools in the folds of her tunic so they don't clink, she eases out of her chair and prowls along the curve of the cavern into a long, broad U, the better to sneak up on her fellow candidate. Closer, closer, staying out of her peripheral vision... until, conversationally, "Boo."

Jaeni squeaks, pulling away from Leova and scooting up onto the next stair. "What are you trying to do to me? Scare me to death? I'm already halfway there!" She flutters her hand in front of her chest before slumping against the wall. "What are you doing down here? It's getting sort of late for us candidates to just be hanging around, not working or anything like that."

Leova says, wounded, "Could have been /much/ scarier." But then she smiles. "Just up. Late for you as much as me. Why are you up?" The older candidate leans against the railing, looking down at the blonde head. "Scavenging?"

"No... Viviana is sort of, I don't know. I don't know where she is so I haven't done any scavenging." Jaeni looks disappointed at that and sighs, placing her chin into her hands. "I had to take a bath, I was cleaning the firepits all day. You get sort of dirty in there, you know? I'm not really ready to go to bed yet." The normally bouncey and cheerful girl is not her usual flakey self.

"Firepits for you, firestone for me," Leova commiserates. "Vivy looked pretty miserable the other day..." There's a series of rattling clinks, her letting go of her tools. "And if you haven't seen her... wonder if she washed out." She stretches, but then hesitates, and in the end doesn't say anything more.

"I did the firestone sacking yesterday. Today was the pits." Jaeni repeats. "With Aleudre." Pause. "Who abandoned me in the middle of the day to run off with the Weyrsecond and..." A lightbulb seems to go on over her head and she peers up at Leova. "You." There's not any malice there, just realization. There's a little sigh and she shakes her head about Viviana. "She might have been... miserable but I think she's got too much vinigar in her to quit."

Leova ducks her head, eyes sliding away from Jaeni: it was her, all right. She's compelled to explain, "Don't know why she wanted us, but there it was." Finally glancing back at the blonde, "Think you're right, though. About the vinegar. Hope so. Do you... if you want to look for a couple things. We could."

"Yeah, well. Aleudre likes to run off whenever he possibly can." Jaeni rolls her eyes, shrugs her shoulders. "I hope so too. I don't really want to see any of us just... walk off and leave. Or go home. Viviana really likes living here too. If anyone should be going home it's-" She stops herself there and wanely smiles. "Oh no, it's okay. You know, it's late. I'm sure you were trying to relax and stuff."

Leova can't argue Aleudre, so she doesn't. But then Jaeni stops herself and Leova looks closer, and finally says, "Don't worry. I won't ask." Nor does she repeat her offer, or walk away. Yet. "This scavenger thing. Seems like it might be to distract us. From what's coming."

Jaeni lets out a breath of air and smiles again for Leova. "No, it's okay. Just a good measure of self-doubt is all. I guess, you know." She breaks her gaze away from the older girl and casts her gaze onto her hands. "Yeah, I think they did too. They're hoping we'll be so busy running around doing chores most of the time and looking for random things all the other times, that we'll forget." She purses her lips together and shakes her head. "They're probably right to be doing it."

Leova finds a smile for her in return, at least until Jaeni looks away, when her expression turns solemn. Weary. "Probably." Her eyes close for a long moment before they reopen. "Long walk across the bowl... I'd better get to bed. Night, Jaeni."
