Living Cavern, High Reaches Weyr

Stalactites hang high above this enormous cavern like a jagged chandelier or an inversion of the Spires themselves, but shadows cling to them instead of light. Below lie great tables arranged in rows, each large enough to serve a fighting wing, while in the nooks and alcoves around the cavern's edge sit more sensibly-sized tables, from six- and eight-seaters down to intimate spots for just a couple of diners. The only really open space is around the kitchen entrance, smelling of food and rarely quiet, and by the nearby serving tables with their long buffet of the day's offerings.

Tapestries on the smooth walls -- some faded and others newly woven -- only slightly mute the sea of sound when a meal is in full swing, but they add cheerfulness augmented by the glowlight from wall sconces and the centerpieces of each table. Still, shadows always creep along the ceiling and into the mouths of the exits -- the myriad small hallways at one end of the cavern and, at the other, the twisting tunnel to the bowl near an array of coathooks and and hatracks -- and late at night, when the glows are allowed to dim, the chamber can seem very dark indeed.

It's breakfast time, and the living cavern is full with people in the process of starting their day. There's plenty to choose from food-wise, and that seems to have stumped one particular weyrling this morning, who just can't seem to make up his mind. N'ky stands in front of the hot food trays, pondering over the eggs, bacon and sausage, and apologising to those people he gets in the way of. He's holding a plate so his intention to choose something is clear, but deciding on what to pick is proving hard.

Hana sweeps in, set for the day and ready to take few prisoners - unless it is for a tea party, which it is a bit early for. Making her way towards the table, a single plate is gathered and the cold breakfast foods are aimed for. Well, until an indecisive weyrling is spied, and a course change is laid in. "Good morning, Nick!" she calls out, bright-eyed and far too cheerful for the hour. "Is there anything good out this morning?"

"O-oh. Hi, Hana." N'ky snaps out of his thoughtful stare to give the woman a crooked, shy smile, before he looks back at the breakfast foods and bites hard on his bottom lip. "Um... I th-think it all looks good, but, um...I d-don't have an appetite for any of it." The green weyrling winces, then shrugs his shoulders, almost apologetically. "B-but I think I'm hungry, I j-just, um, c-can't decide if I want to eat."

"Breakfast is the most important part of the day, you should /try/ even if you aren't sure you feel like it," Hana repeats the saying most have grown up, before hmming. "Is it because it's warmer now? If that is the case, maybe some fruit with bread and butter? And some juice or water?" As she speaks, the fruit at least ends up on her plate, some wedgies of melon and some berries, even some veggie sticks, though no bread.

N'ky wrinkles his nose as he looks at Hana's plate, then scratches at his cheek thoughtfully. "It looks g-good, but I, um... I d-dunno. Will it be, um, f-filling enough for the d-drills and things I've got to do?" A weyrling life is a busy life! He looks back to the hot food, then squeezes his way into the line to add a couple of rashers of bacon, some sausage and eggs onto his plate - though he doesn't look entirely enthusiastic about any of it. "I'll, um, s-see if this goes down," he says softly as he rejoins Hana. "W-would you like to sit with me? I-it's b-been forever s-since I saw you long enough to t-talk to you."

"Probably not," Hana allows, "But it would be better than nothing - and what you've chosen even probably even better than that. Small bites, plenty of drinking?" she offers before nodding. "Company would be nice, and we've both been busy. You more than I, if I had to guess," she adds with a quick smile before looking about. A nod is given towards a table, "There seems to be room over there. Shall we?"

Nodding, in agreement with the table choice, N'ky leads the way over to it, slipping into a seat with a tired little sigh. "I've been so b-busy," he admits as unenthusiastically spears a piece of bacon, picking up the whole piece to simply hold it in front of his face - no eating yet, just looking. "Working s-so hard. Cailluneth's g-growing up really b-big, too. H-have you seen her lately? She's, um, t-taller than me now." He's proud of that fact, even if it's a tired sort of proud. "Wh-what have you been doing, miss Hana? Since you decided to stay?"

"Taller than you? Clearly, it's been far too long since I've seen the pair of you," Hana admits, before picking up one of the veggie sticks, and cruch-nibbling into one end of it. "It's good you are working hard though. Learning how to do new things is never easy - and learning it right makes everything else learned later so much easier." There is a certain knowledge behind that, but nothing to explain it, as Hana laughs quietly, "Oh, for the most part, assisting Lady Azaylia. Rather similiar for what I was doing for Lady Issedi, but with much more.. hm.. running about going on." There is a pause, before she gives the rasher a pointed look. "Among other things, making sure she /eats/." It must be a rider failing.

"Oh, y-you're working w-with weyrwoman Azaylia? I bet that's n-nice. Sh-she's lovely." N'ky smiles gently, giving in to that look and taking a delicate, but obedient nibble of his bacon. Then he sets his fork with the rasher on it down, wrinkling his nose in what could easily be displeasure. "So, um, wh-what sort of things are you d-doing for her? Other than, um, m-making her eat? Do you g-get involved with the, um, W-Weyr stuff? Like... like, um... the big stuff?"

"She is very lovely indeed. And tries very hard," Hana agrees, before hmming. "Eating is a big one, though I fold that in with making sure there are nibbles and tea for meetings or when she is working on scrolls. There is also helping her keep track when she is to meet with people - and of course, helping her get ready in the morning. All the running about is not easy on her clothing, so that has been something of a priority now that the meals have settled out. There is a pause, then she tilts her head. "Weyr stuff? Ah.. not exactly. I wouldn't know enough to be involved in such things." There is a rueful smile, "I am, after all, just a holder."

N'ky blinks at the huge list of things, while poking the food about on his plate. "Gosh, that's a lot of stuff. I d-didn't realise Azaylia would do s-so much." He bites down on his lip, chewing thoughtfully. "S-so, um, when do you f-find time for yourself? B-because everyone seems to be s-so busy lately, i-it's, um, h-hard to keep up with everyone, and if you're k-keeping someone else up with everything, then... y-you'll get behind, maybe?"

Hana nods a bit, "She always seems to be thinking over something, if not actually doing. It's one of the reasons I insisted she let me help her honestly." A couple of quick nibbles finishes off the carrot, and then it is to the melon she turns her attention. "Try a bite of the eggs, at least." Nudge, nudge. A hazard of eating breakfast with a motherhen. "And evenings are usually fairly free. I take my walks then, often near the lake - or some needlework in at the nighthearth. I don't require much, especially, as you say, everyone is so busy."

The eggs are poked at, but N'ky does eventually scoop some up on his fork to try. He chews over-long, then forces a swallow, not looking at all happy about it. Then he sets his fork down, pushes his plate an inch or so away from him, and drags his klah mug over to nurse that, instead. "I th-think I've seen you by the lake some nights, but I've b-been busy with Cai and n-not been able to say hello, until you've b-been too far gone." His klah is swirled in its mug, the murky dark liquid watched closely. "A-and I've barely been in the nighthearth lately. I-it must be very warm in there, these nights? S-sometimes it gets too h-hot in the barracks, and it m-makes me want to take Cailluneth to s-sleep outside."

Hana frowns a bit, then picks up a couple of berries - big, plump ones, and offers them. "You will do your Cai no good if you fall over, Nicky. They are nice and cool - and they've been rather sweet of late." She'll keep on holding them out, too, until he'll take them. "A bit warm, but the light there is good for the tiny stitching, which is much better than what is available in the dorms. You were? I hadn't realized - I try not to get too close when you all are working on things. I'd hate to get in the way!"

N'ky takes the berries, holding them in the palm of his hand. It probably doesn't do the fact that they're cool any good, but he does pick at them, popping one into his mouth to bite into it before swallowing it down. "Y-you should come say hello. Cailluneth's, um, v-very friendly. Sh-she'll even try not to d-drip on you, if she's wet." Another berry goes down the hatch, with barely a chew. "N-next time I see you, I'll c-call you over. The o-other weyrlings d-don't ever mind company, and s-sometimes I'm even there bathing her o-on my own, or just, um, w-watching the moons together." Down goes another berry.

Success! Hana nudges her plate over, "We can share mine - and I'll steal a rasher," she offers with a hint of a smile, before nodding. "That sounds like a lovely plan. And if it is especially warm out, I dare say I would not even mind drips." As she speaks, she works at cutting up the melon into tiny pieces, perfect for tossing in thoughtlessly, before adding, "Skywatching can be very relaxing. I keep thinking I need to try going up to the diving cliff to check out the view, but I should probably check it out first during the daytime. Have you been up there?"

Other than taking a single berry, N'ky leaves Hana's plate be. He does, however, push his own towards her, encouraging her to take what she wants. Mention of the diving cliff has him nodding. "O-oh, yes, I've b-been up there a lot. Um... I-I was up there last night, a-actually. With Mave." He smiles softly, picking up his klah mug to sip from the thick drink within. "I, um, c-carved something on the highest b-boulders, and w-wanted her to see it."

"If I'm stealing a rasher, I won't have room for everything else," Hana prods, or tries before she shakes away the worry. "Oh? With Mave, was it? And what did you carve," she asks, clearly teasing a bit. ".. And speaking of someone else I should take the time to catch up with..."

"N-no, please, um, h-help yourself. I'm... I-I'm full, I think." N'ky nudges his plate closer to Hana. "Wh-what did I carve? Oh, um, i-it's n-nothing special. Um, j-just a moon, and, um, a shooting star. B-but it's right - riiiight up at the top, um, y-you'd have to climb to see it." And he's hoping his theory that Hana isn't the climbing type is true. "The, um, s-star looks k-kinda like the one I gave M-Mave at the, um, h-hatching feast, if you saw it?"

Hana frowns at N'ky for a moment, then shakes her head. "At the very least, put something to nibble on in your beltpouch for later," before she steals that bit of rasher - and unlike the slow nibbling that occured earlier with the fruit, nibbles her way through it quite easily - leaving the fattiest bits on the plate. "I bet it is just lovely then, and she enjoyed your effort greatly." There is a pause, then she spies someone moving in the back of the cavern. "And the work is never done... Keep well today, and give your Cai my greetings!" And then she's off, plate left behind for any stealing the weyrling might like to do.

"Cailluneth s-says hello back," N'ky calls after Hana as she leaves. He pokes about then at the plate she's left behind, picking at a couple more berries. Then he too is done, and he picks up his klah mug to leave the caverns, heading no doubt to his dragon.

< Aw. ^^ That was so nice. I like how N'ky and Hana catch up... though careful N'ky! If you keep up these sorts of habits Hana will shove a funnel in your mouth and force feed you. ._.
