It's a damp and muddy spring afternoon at High Reaches, and I'lani is expected: correspondence between K'del and B'doran has finally resulted in this meeting, at which, if all goes well, the High Reachian Weyrleader will formally accept I'lani's transfer papers. Cadejoth is in the air above the rim, throwing himself into mock battle against the raindrops; his rider is safer-- and warmer-- indoors, sitting in the Council Chambers, with paperwork in front of him, and a mug of klah to his left.

I'lani arrived earlier this morning. He wasn't presumptuous enough to come with all his belongings, but they are all neatly packed up at his weyr in Benden. He chose to come a little early to orient himself, and to let Hasarth get the lay of the land. The lanky bronze spent the morning chatting up the locals, and has now gone to find himself a dry spot for a nap.

He's precisely on time. He's still dressed for flying, and his dark hair is slicked off his face from the rain. He pauses near the entryway and clears his throat. He announces his presence with a simple, "Sir?"

"I'lani." Dragons being what they are, no doubt K'del has been kept well-informed as to the arrival and movements of the Benden dragonrider and his bronze; now, he greets the man without even needing to glance up, although he does that, too, a few moments later. His pale blue eyes are appraising, his silence lasting a few seconds before he gestures to one of the seats opposite him about the great council table. "Welcome to High Reaches."

"Thank you," says I'lani. He's not a barrel-chested man, but he's got a voice like one. It's deep and it projects. "Lovely weather you're having," he drawls, then reaches up to push back a bit of unruly wet hair. "I hope my paperwork made it ahead of me."

A smile finds K'del's mouth; broadens it. "High Reaches has wet springs," he says, cheerfully. "It'll dry out soon enough, and then we'll have a lovely summer; you'll see." As long as this meeting goes well, of course. "Mmm. Cases like these, always seems wise to have a chat before things are formally confirmed. Wanted to hear your feelings on the whole venture."

"Naturally," says I'lani. "I'm not a troublemaker, sir. I promise you that." Quite the opposite. His record indicates he cracks down on troublemakers. Perhaps a bit too...enthusiastically for some peoples' tastes. "What would you like to know?"

K'del reaches for his mug, cradling it between both hands as he studies I'lani, his expression thoughtful and considering. "No, 'troublemaker' doesn't seem to be a term that comes up in your file. Mostly, though... guess I'd like to know how you feel about transferring. How you see yourself being of use to my Weyr. What you see your strengths are."

I'lani stands with the posture of a soldier at-ease, with hands clasped behind his back. His foot position is a little more casual and not evenly distributed on both feet. The question however, is a personal one. His jaw sets. He takes in a breath. "Well. I love Benden, don't get me wrong. It's been my home for ten Turns. I've done a lot of growing up there. But as I've gotten older, I've started to wonder if it's really the best place for me."

A pause. "Go on," says K'del.

I'lani is visibly uncomfortable. He shifts his weight. "I like clarity. I like to know where I stand." Which is Lanispeak for 'I like rules.' "Benden has always been more...relaxed. It's something I've accepted. I..." he hesitates. "Can I be frank?"

"By all means," says K'del, now leaning back in his chair, and, finally, taking a sip from his mug.

"It was just time to move on. There's nothing more complicated than that. There are no major personality conflicts. I didn't have it out with anyone." I'lani grunts softly, "I admit my...style never really matched with Benden's leadership, but I have enough maturity to deal with that. I'm looking for a fresh start."

K'del's mug gets set back down upon the table, the handle adjusted ever so slightly to put it in line with whatever invisible line the weyrleader has in mind. He exhales, the lengthy breath falling short of a sigh, but still carrying with it something - something difficult to discern. "High Reaches is relaxed," he points out. "In its way. My temporary weyrwoman finds my people too prone to questioning orders. How do you feel about that?"

"Questioning orders I can deal with," says I'lani without hesitation. "If it's done respectfully, appropriately, and not designed to undermine authority, that is. People should be free to speak their minds at appropriate times and places." He cracks a small smile. "I've done my fair share of questioning."

"But disobeying orders would not," K'del assumes, "be acceptable. There's a difference, in your view of things?"

"Naturally," says I'lani. "A good leader listens to the people under them if they have concerns or a differing opinion. But when push comes to shove, orders are orders."

K'del reaches for his mug, pauses, and then draws his hand back again, twining his fingers together instead. He gives I'lani another long, appraising glance, and then nods. "All right," he says. "Your paperwork is in order, and I've not seen a reason to turn you down. You'll fly with Alpine, at least to begin with; if it doesn't work out, we can consider other options, but it will do to begin with. I'll pass on the paperwork to get you assigned a Weyr. Welcome to High Reaches, rider."

At those words, a subtle tension releases across I'lani's shoulders. It's tension he didn't even know he was carrying. "Thank you, sir. I appreciate it."

K'del's nod answers the thanks, his mouth drawn into a quiet smile. "Know you'll do your best not to disappoint me. I'll have Y'rel and H'kon-- your new Wingleader and Wingsecond-- get in contact regarding your drill schedule. Sure they'll give you a few days to get settled in, in any case. Is there anything else, for now?"

"No, sir," says I'lani. "I'll need to go back for my things, but that shouldn't take too long." The benefits of having a large dragon - fewer trips.

"Good," says K'del, with another nod. "I'll let you get to it, then. No doubt we'll see you again soon." Dismissed!
