Wake up.

Wake up.

Wake up

Cold sweat traced in rivulets over her goosebumps, dark eyes wide in terror. Her throat burned, and the burning smell wouldn't dissipate. Her heart felt as though it had burst from her chest breaking her ribs in the process.

Akluseth's faceted eyes whirled in dangerous shades of gleaming red orange. Just the sight of him centered her as she felt those restless waves start washing over her, slowly eroding away the sense of panic and fear. « This can't go on Edyis. » His tenor as soothing as the chilly depths of the ocean, and sounding impossibly tired compared to his usual constant flow of energy.

She blinked at him, "It's just a nightmare Akluseth, everyone has them." Running a hand through damp curls as her feet touched cold stone, a few tries at the pump sending cool water to splash into a glass.

« The same ones night after night? » He wonders, the colors whirling softly to something more neutral in the light of the dying glows.

She thought about that, trying to remember the last time she'd woken like this, not since before impression. "What are you even talking about Aklu-" but she stopped suddenly as she felt the familiar rush of water.

« Every night since we were bound. » And though he couldn't remember exactly that first nightmare or many of them, he knew the words to be true and impressed the weight of them upon her. « What will you do when the time comes for us to flame? It's only sheer luck that you've managed to avoid the issues with ground equipment. You need to tell Olveraeth's, Solith's, Rasavyth's or even Mivength's. It is getting more difficult to disrupt the nightmares. »

Edyis shook her head trying to remember, she'd thought things had gotten better. True she was drinking a little more to help her sleep, and she'd avoided the ground crew lessons as much as possible. Her legs felt shaky beneath her as she glanced at the cabinet that housed her growing collection of bottles. "It will be fine Akluseth, and the less attention I attract, the better off we will be, we've plenty of time before flaming starts."

« Haven't you learned by now that there's nothing to be gained from acts of stupid pride? » Exasperated now, and pulling off his couch with a deepening growl. « You run your mouth and I suffer for it right along with you. I am telling you now; your nightmares are getting much worse. It's taking more and more effort to wake you each time. How much worse does this have to get before you listen to me for a change? »

"I know what I'm doing Akluseth, it will be fine." Unable to soften the edge of outrage in her voice, Edyis refilled the water glass. "There is plenty of time before we have to worry about flaming I -" but the brown's claws pushed open the metal door, the pulley assembly rattling in protest. Disappearing into the drift of white through darkness outside.

« Tell someone soon Edyis... or I will. »

She pulled one of the quilts Greta left around her shoulders, feeling suddenly and deeply cold.

He didn't know how long he flew, nor did the biting wind seem to bother him. There was simply no holding still. That restless flow of thoughts was reaching for his own, blocked by floes of jagged ice and violent winds.

They couldn't keep going as they had. He understood this much though he couldn't think of an easy solution. If he went to the weyrling staff, it could turn out worse than if the dreams were still left unchecked. She was more fragile than she seemed, the undercurrents of doubt and fear growing deeper by the day.

As his paws sunk through the newly fallen snow, he reminded himself that, that too was a necessary part of growing, or so he had been told, though by whom he could not remember. He felt guilty sometimes, knowing it was his selfish choice that brought this on her, but it wasn't a thing he often dwelled on.

He thought about visiting Aeaeth's ledge, or Roszadyth's after all they both were girls, so maybe they would have some advice about what to do.

He dismissed this thought when he realized the time, and how angry either of them might be to be woken at such an hour. That course of thought ruled out his dam though he couldn't help but long a little bit for Niahvth's comforting sunshine at the moment.

« Akluseth? » Edyis's voice finally seeped through the ice casting warm color across the harsh landscape of his thoughts. Hesitant, uncertain, but there all the same.

As always his heart did cartwheels at the sound of his name, the way the syllables danced when she thought or spoke it. A fresh surge of energy was filling him from nose to tail as again he launched into the sky.

He could be angry, he could be tired and concerned, embarrassed, or frustrated, but as long as they were together, no matter how angry. They would never be alone.
