It's been three days since that group of convicts were rescued from their stone prison, and the worksite remains steadfastly closed. It's almost worse for some of the convicts, whose enforced idleness has already resulted in a couple of fights-- but then, no one wants to be in another collapse, either. Repair work has commenced, and all reports suggest that the problem was in a faulty support beam. What probably wasn't supposed to get out was the suspicion that the beam might have been tampered with, and with no official word on it, speculation has been rife. Was someone specific the target? The candidates, maybe? Or is it just an act of terrorism against the weyr itself?

In the meantime, it has been made exceptionally clear that those convicts Searched for Iovniath and Cadejoth's clutch will not be joining their fellow convicts in the building work, even once it commences again. It has been deemed too dangerous and that, convicts or no, these people are /candidates/, and need to reach the Sands in one piece.

Which is (understandably, perhaps) causing any number of complaints, both from within the existing convict group, and the weyr itself. Convicts, doing normal weyr chores? Not with the children, surely! Or with anything delicate! Or-- so, what /can/ they be trusted to do? For the moment, the answer seems to be 'mostly cleaning and grunt work', and these with heavy supervision.

But is it all going to backfire? Should convicts really be considered suitable for even the most menial of weyr tasks?

Or are people just prejudiced against a group of people who've had some bad luck?
