>---< Snowasis, High Reaches Weyr(#555RJ) >----------------------------------<
The Snowasis is rarely quiet, and even then, the high-ceilinged former
weyr is kept from echoing by the fantastical booths tucked into its
convoluted perimeter. The secluded seating spaces have been shaped from
the truncated stalagmites that escaped the smoothing of the main floor,
and are both softened and separated by colorful hangings that are thick
and opaque enough to make each corner its own private nook.
Some of the smaller stalactites still roam the ceiling, their jagged teeth
tracing a bumpy, inverted spine to the hearth. There, a thick rug with a
low klah table and comfortable armchairs and couches sit, their upholstery
and cushions changed sporadically to match the season: bright, light
colors in the summer, fresh greens and yellows in the spring, warm
autumnals in fall, and clear, rich hues for winter. Small tables litter
the rest of the cavern, enough to fit up to four people each, while stools
stand along the smooth wooden bar behind which is the passthrough window
to the kitchen. Glass-paneled cabinetry behind the bar provides a clear
view of the available liquors, the many colors reflecting the soft light
of glows tucked into strategic niches around the cavern. It's a typical night in the Snowasis, groups already claiming most of the tables while various card or dart games are ongoing. Edyis is seated at one such table near the dartboards, watching a few Snowdrift riders as they play, the seats around her mostly empty at the moment. There's a full pitcher of a nice dark ale and clean glasses too sitting around, Edyis herself nursing one that's half full with a distracted smile on her face. K'zin doesn't show up for much in the way of social wing activities save those that are mandatory. It's probably equal parts the fact that K'zin spends as much of his time in the forge as he can manage working on whatever it is that he's been given blessing for, if indeed it's only one thing and not many, and the fact that as a veteran resident of the Weyr and seven plus turns as a rider, he's oft seen in the company of his pre-Snowdrift-transfer friends and colleagues. Still, once he has a drink in hand, he angles toward the Snowdrift riders to come say a friendly hello while eyes scan the group. "Edyis," gets a polite tip of K'zin's head after he's exchanged greetings with some others. The sound of her name at least, seems to draw her from whatever faraway place her mind had gone. Ink-dark eyes lifting before focusing on the bronzerider's face in recognition. He even gets a warm smile in greeting. "K'zin." She replies, "How is the forge treating you these days." Lifting her mug to take a long pull of its contents. It's from the inner caverns that Telavi emerges, lithe in her usual leathers, not so much Savannah leathers as leathers for Savannah. Her blonde hair's still a little wet but freshly done up; it'll take her a little while to get to where she's going, even though K'zin is so conveniently tall, with all the greetings and drink-garnering and sparkling smiles as though it weren't miserable outside at all. Something tightens in K'zin's face as his eyes find Telavi on the approach. Rather than letting his gaze linger on the greenrider, he looks to the brown-, "Good. Always good. The forge keeps things simple. What do they have you focusing toward? Just general so far or something more specific?" Clearly, he doesn't pay much attention to things outside his Smithly bubble when it comes to wing matters. Telavi draws her attention briefly, a smile offered in greeting of the Savannah wingrider. She doesn't miss the tightening in K'zin's expression, though it may not show in Edyis's own expression. When it's her turn to give answer there's is a soft smile. "Diplomacy, and Akluseth is working with group lifting. It's been fine so far." Though her tone lacks enthusiasm. "Hey Telavi," Adding a verbal greeting to the prior nonverbal one. Also convenient! Tela may miss the smile, so engrossed, but surely not her name; then she's casting Edyis a smile of her very own and by the time she makes it to join them, she's picked up a little glass that looks and smells of violets. "Good evening." Of course she'd show up by K'zin's side, her and her Savannah-linked leathers, unless he's figured out some other plan. "Fun day?" K'zin's arm reaches as natural as breathing to curl around Telavi's shoulders in a one-armed hug that becomes just a comfortable attachment after he's delivered the press of a kiss to the top of her head. Such public displays of affection might once have been unheard of, but now? No longer. "Always. Good day, Tela?" is countered before he looks back to Edyis. "Diplomacy always has interesting things to offer, even if it's generally a lot of minding one's manners. Doesn't capture your interest?" It's queried politely, what was lacking in the tone not missed. Something in Edyis's smile as she observes the two, she chuckles softly at that display of affection, but it is far from mocking. The question earns a lift of her shoulder non-comittally. "The work is fine, and you know Mielline, she's a good wingleader." Akluseth hasn't had any trouble, happy to be a part of the group in drills and other activities. "Trying to figure out where I fit is all, I think. It will come, there's plenty of time to figure it out." It's a different sort of smile as Telavi leans into him for that moment, a softer sort of brilliance, even though there's a slight crinkle to her nose at the countering; "Good and well-behaved," she assures. The greenrider's given over any nose-antics at Mielline's name, at least in public; with real interest, though, "How is it for you? Knowing you'll be in Snowdrift forever-- well, not forever necessarily, but barring your wingleader getting hit over the head," as Z'ian famously was, "or terrible things like that?" Does Quinlys count as terrible? "Good Weyrleader, too," K'zin adds of Mielline, with a quicker, quieter, "so far," before he's judiciously sipping from his glass. "That I'll never believe. A well-behaved Telavi is like a non-goofy K'zin or a--" he looks to Edyis as though he's going to fill something in there, but instead just sips his drink again with an awkward clearing of his throat, "An unleaderly K'del," he tries as lame cover. "Trying to figure out where one fits seems to be an on-going process. And just when you think you do, you can find you just don't." Philosophy. Someone get something harder for them to drink. Edyis laughs lightly, "How does it feel knowing soon there will be not only a new batch, but a double batch of weyrlings at that? Is Quinlys going to have to hire even more support staff this round?" Dark eyes flicking over to K'zin, as he comments on Mielline's new status in the weyr. And the awkward throat clearing earns a smile and an arch of one brow. "Seems to be the way of it." She agrees. "Are you implying it's just as terrible?" Telavi teases the brownrider, and has a sip of her little drink, the violet staining her upper lip momentarily before she licks it off. "Your Weyrleader, so terrible?" picking up on K'zin's riff. For all her light words, she has a discreet glance at him, veiled behind her lashes; when she looks back at Edyis, there's not concern but wide-eyed limpidness. "It's not so different than the time before last. Closer together, but that-- well, it'll make things more exhausting in the beginning," K'zin predicts, "but maybe better later on because there's more things that will overlap?" He looks to Telavi with raised brows for her 'expert' thoughts, given her greater experience. "My Weyrleader is recovering in Southern," the bronzerider replies to the greenrider as if he's 'above all this teasing nonsense'. Edyis goes a little wide eyed at the word terrible. "I thought you and Quinlys lived for shaping young minds and thus the future of the weyr, don't tell me you are disillusioned with your calling already." clutching at her heart in shock, or at least a pretty decent imitation of it. As for how easy or difficult a double clutch will be, her shoulders lift and fall, Telavi is the expert on the matter. "So exhausting. The beginning is the worst part," Telavi is pleased to whinge. "Maybe better later. I hope better later. More of a wait would have been better, later. Also sooner. You Snowdrift diplomatists, tell me; K'zin, should I pretend not to notice that Edyis never did answer my question? About how it is for her, being stuck? And Edyis, he did so refer to her as a Weyrleader, if, fine, not his Weyrleader, did he not?" K'zin's lips press together at Edyis' words to Telavi, using his infinite manly wisdom to choose to stay silent on that first score. His lips curl slightly into a sympathetic smile for what is so exhausting, then shrugs elegantly to the rest, choosing to sip his drink instead. "Can I freshen your drink, darling?" 'Darling' isn't the usual choice of term of endearment, so that might speak to Tela, at least. Edyis laughs, a rich sound full of genuine mirth. "One of prerogatives of having graduated." She grins, "So if you wish to satisfy your curiosity, you will just have to use those skills Savannah taught you." She smiles then, "It would seem Akluseth has... well." The smile falters. "I'm needed elsewhere. But have a good night both of you, and good luck with the exhausting trial ahead." Weyrlings she must mean, since she's snagging her jacket and stepping off in the direction of the bowl. Telavi, so disappointed. "If it were more important... no, no, I still shouldn't," she says wistfully. "Say hello to Akluseth! Clear skies!" She waves before slipping her arm into K'zin's with a soft 'please'; she saw what he was doing there, and she can tease him about it later. |
