S'trun was the first to go. When he wanted another try at finishing what they'd started, what she told him was that between was coming up and they couldn't afford distractions. Which was true as far as it went. Sometimes he'd watch her too closely anyhow, at least until one of the others accidentally-on-purpose got in the way. Once she wondered if she would still have wound up where she was if she'd had a brother like I'ro. She thought not. Next came beer. Ale. The spicy spike for her klah that she liked so much. Even the watered wine. That night with Jaeni was her last real drink, but it was a good one. Better than the water, which tasted flat on her tongue, though it was dark enough that she couldn't see if anything was floating in it. Even if she had wanted to. After that were the hot peppers, the heavy desserts, anything that went down easy but liked to burn back up. She wasn't sure what to give up next, what else she didn't want to carry between. But she knew they had to be ready.
