| "Tillek," Nakasha repeated, all eyes on her brother - on Perris, who'd given her the strangest request. "You want me to go back with you to Tillek? Why?" She noted the way Perris' hand curled around Esnara's, the way he smiled at her, encouraging her to speak. "We thought it would be nice for you, Nakasha. Somewhere different, just for a little while. Oh, please, won't you say yes?" "You... Actually want me to come?" It wasn't that she wasn't flattered: she was. But. She and Esnara had never really seemed to have much in common. Esnara liked her job as a seamstress, liked sewing and making things look nice, and all the things that Nakasha didn't quite... get. "Oh, yes," the other woman told her, earnestly. "We would like it so much. You won't be any trouble at all, really. Please?" "I-- of course." It seemed like a no-brainer, ultimately. What else was she going to do? Stay around here, end up married in a matter of months? No thanks. "of course I'll come. For a while." "Just for a while. Oh, Nakasha, how wonderful!" The slighter woman lunged at Nakasha, wrapping her into a hug that seemed rather more substantial than it ought, given her size. Nakasha eyed her brother over her sister-in-law's shoulder. It was his idea, she was sure of it. His... or maybe one of the others. It was strange. Of course, she'd still have preferred an invitation from Kas, but she was pretty sure her mother wouldn't be standing on, beaming, at that kind of invitation. She was pretty sure that kind of invitation wouldn't have passed any kind of approval test. Damn. And so it was, two days later, when K'del arrived to return the newly wed couple to Tillek, that Nakasha travelled with them. He winked at her, as he handed her bag down to her, in the Courtyard of Tillek Hold. "You're in on this," she told him, blandly. He just laughed. "You'll have a good time, Kash. Bet you will. Can't be more boring than home, right?" "Right." She laughed. "You'll visit?" "If I get the chance." It was always that way, now. 'If I get the chance'. 'If I can'. 'When I can'. She was proud of him, though. How could she not be? Tillek was... better than expected, actually. True, Esnara's initial plans to have her help out with the seamstresses fell through when Nakasha ruined a number of items of clothing (it wasn't that she COULDN'T sew straight so much as... she never quite paid enough attention to do so); eventually, they told her to take long walks or something, so long as she stayed out of trouble. Which... she didn't NOT do. Sort of. As she told Kas on his first visit, two weeks later, it wasn't so much that she was being naughty as she was... utilising her freedom. He laughed, and told her to be careful. "It'd kill mother if you got sent home in disgrace, remember." "What if it's just enough disgrace that no one would ever want to marry me?" "Do you really want to be an old maid, hanging around at home forever?" Beat. "No." "Well then." Mostly, Kash just wanted to stay. To stay and keep this freedom, or maybe go on to High Reaches, just like Kas had done. If Tillek was better than she'd anticipated, High Reaches would surely be better still. But Kas refused to take her. Utterly refused. "You got sent here, Kash. Not my place to take you anywhere else. Mother'd kill me too, you know." Damn. What was the point of having a Weyrleader for a brother, if they still wouldn't stand up to their own mother? Double damn. |
