| The eggs have been on the sands long enough that most people have already seen them and/or gotten bored with them, which leads to a quieter gallery for Eliyaveith and her clutch except for the two Candidates who watch and a drudge who has escaped his duties to stay here. It is empty enough that she feels comfortable enough to doze, especially with her rider dragged down from the height of the gallery to lean instead against the railing that separates the sands from them. As is her usual habit now, the golden queen has tucked an egg with her to sleep, only noticeable to some by its absence. This time it is that warped, golden-sheened egg that hides under her embrace and wing, protected from the world as they nap together. Sometime later, after she's escaped Eadgyd's smarmy rebuttals, High Reaches' newest goldrider is drawn by natural attraction to Fort's galleries; it's unlikely that that one weyrling has stopped tossing his cookies yet. As she mounts the steps into the cavern, Farideh's eyes gravitate towards the queen and her treasure, but they move quick enough to survey the rest of the galleries, and eventually fall on the reposed form of Lilah. "It's soon, isn't it?" is her softly spoken question, as she moves up to the railing next to the redheaded woman. "And that egg-- are you still worried as you once were?" Shes watchful, of the other goldrider, and slides her hands into the pockets of her riding jacket. "Two sevens, maybe a little longer they say," confirms Lilah without looking at first, only glancing towards Farideh as she settles at the railing next to her with a lingering look over the younger goldrider. "It is hard not to worry, when all of the eyes of the Weyr will be watching what Eliyaveith manages to produce. And if it does hatch, and it is a deformed queen--." She doesn't pursue that thought, but instead follows a look back to Eliyaveith. "Two sevens is soon." Farideh sounds impressed by that statistic, leaning her torso against the railing. "I think-- you certainly have reason to be anxious, with what happened to Elaruth's clutch, but Lilah--" She frowns, her brow furrowing down, as she cants her head towards the other woman, sympathy in her hazel eyes. "She isn't Elaruth. I'm not-- I'm just learning about these things, but it's unrealistic to hold her to her dame's reputation, I think. Even if she rose the first time and didn't-- well, there could be reasons for that. Perhaps it was the other dragon's fault." There's a tiniest quirking of her lips before they smooth back into a thin line. "Do you think they know?" A hint of laughter is held in Lilah's response as she answers, "It can't be soon enough. You'll find out soon enough how boring all of this is. At once boring and stressful." Her gaze settles back on Farideh at that, meeting sympathy with a dismissive smile that touches her lips briefly. "Perhaps it was Nsath's fault. Or it is something wrong with all of the dragons. Something from past Intervals that bred into them-- It isn't just Fort who has had problems, is it?" A pause, though, before she's questioning to clarify, "Who knows what?" "It can't be any worse than weyrlinghood and being stuck inside all the time, or--" Farideh sighs and bows her head briefly, watching her toe scuff against the stone underneath. "Being grounded." Horror of horrors! Her eyes lift again, to touch on Lilah's face. "I don't know about the others, but it's been the last few of Elaruth's that everyone talks about. Maybe-- maybe she's too old to be clutching, now," but she instantly sounds unsure about that course of thinking, her frown deepening. "The golds know about-- about-- their eggs. Do you like she'd tell you? Do you think--" She gives her head a little shake and laughs lightly. "I don't know. I can imagine trying to talk to them all, to will them to be and get strong and-- it's silly." "That green-- she was perfectly hatched," Lilah replies on a quiet murmur at Farideh's considerations, shaking her head in a slight gesture as she meets Faridehs gaze. There is a hint of defensiveness, there, as she does. "It wasn't anything that was Elaruth's part. Bad choices, fate, chance--." She doesn't begin to address the clutch before, though. Instead, she turns her attention back to the eggs. "She tells me that she worries, but she can't explain why. She is-- well, she is sure that they are all alive in their eggs, waiting for the right time. I don't think what she wills will make any difference, in the end." A quiet moment of contemplation passes, and then Farideh says, "You'd rather fault your own dragon-- that there's something wrong with her-- than-- Elaruth." It's said slowly, uncomprehendingly. "Fate? Chance? What are they? You even said it might be something bred into the dragons. It could just be that-- well, after a while, it's not a good idea for women to have babies. Why not dragons? Why can't it be--" She stops herself and turns to squint out at the eggs. "I think you should trust her. If she's sure they are, why wouldn't they be? You seem very quick to believe the worst." "I am saying that there could be something, but that green was not it. If it had been one of Niahvth's, one of your clutchmates, or one of Roszadyth's, would you want to lay the blame on the dam?" counters Lilah, an edge to her words as she meets that incomprehension with the narrowed focus of dark eyes. She straightens away from the rail even as Eliyaveith begins to stir sleepily, only continuing in a murmur, "You may not have noticed this yet, Farideh, but the worst is usually what tends to happen. It is what we need to prepare for. And alive doesn't mean well, and dragons aren't perfect." "I would at least aknowledge the possibility, and if it was Roszadyth, have her examined by the best dragonhealers I could find. It's not as though Elaruth is young anymore. She's been one of more prolific golds at Fort, right? That has to take some toll and-- it's not as if she can help it, but making yourself, and her, feel bad for something that likely has nothing to even do with you--" Farideh meets the narrowed-eyed gaze with another frown and bemusement. "No, but-- neither do I want to live my life in a constant case of the doldrums because something bad could happen at any moment. I can't help to think perhaps you're making yourself depressed with all this talk. You can't do anything about it. You can't prepare for-- for-- ill-formed dragons, or speculation, or eggs that don't hatch, or even dragons that go between. So, what are you worrying for? It's-- supposed to be a happy time." A brow curves upwards at Farideh's lecture, bemused as it is, before Lilah answers her in a challenge, "Can't you? Mentally, emotionally? You do not think it's worse to ignore what could be wrong in favor of-- what, being happy for the moment so that it all can come crashing down without being braced for it?" Steel darkens the goldrider's gaze on the younger woman, her jaw tightening slightly as she continues, "But I will keep your thoughts in mind, weyrling. I'll file them right alongside how I am encouraging my Weyr's bad behavior with a place of gambling, wasn't it?" "I never said don't be prepared for the worst, but you why would you want to live like every moment, everything is going to come crashing down?" Farideh's face mirrors her frustration. "Why do you have to do that? Why does everyone? Because I'm a weyrling, my opinion isn't valid? Will you give my opinions more weight if I become High Reaches' Weyrwoman? And have me pretend you didn't just--" She makes a face and takes a couple steps back from the railing. "Nothing-- it's an abysmal clutch that's destined to be all duds, you're right. High Reaches duties and all that, ma'am," is punctuated with salute, before she turns on her heel and starts back out the way she came. "Because you are a child," snaps Lilah back, even as Farideh turns to go. She watches the younger woman go with a narrowed focus, even as a soft, worried croon punctuates the cavern as Eliyaveith wakes. |
