| They'd never tried not to, not exactly. That wouldn't be proper. But Jaques couldn't quite bring himself to actively try, either, and since their obligatory wedding night, things between him and Evie had been two steps forward and as many back again more often than not. There were some in the camp, that saw their marriages as nothing but a duty. There were the Toms, who thought it a burden. There were some who grew to love their wives, as Jaques' parents seemed to. For Jaques, everything just seemed so awkward. She'd been his first kiss, and they'd both spit on the ground afterward. They'd half-drowned each other in the river, tried to push each other off the cliffs, elbowed each other behind Cason's back. Now Jaques didn't know if he was supposed to pull her hair or kiss her, and so he did neither, and the awkwardness just grew. Now it wasn't going to be the only thing growing. The midwife congratulated him, of course. So did Da, and Mother. And before long, the whole camp knew: son of leader guy was going to have a son of his own. Unless it was a daughter. Either way, news of Evie's pregnancy spread fast through the camp, and Evie smiled so pretty for everyone--she really did glow, Jaques thought, and despite the trepidation of fatherhood and the general lukewarmness of their marriage, he found himself smiling sheepishly, too, and accepting the congratulations with a shy duck of his head. That night as they went to bed, Jaques waited for Evie to slip into the furs, too, and then he awkwardly slid an arm around her. She hesitated, then shifted against him. He kissed her forehead. |
