"It's a problem. It was stupid of you to do to begin with."

M'raz wasn't leaving him any option.

"Don't think I don't know that it was by your design either," the old man hrumphed, giving G'laer the eye that, were he any other man, might make him quake in his boots.

The greenrider didn't deny it. The circumstances of his coming to wingsecondship were unusual enough that it almost had to be by some design of his, didn't it? Or H'vier's, but few people gave H'vier enough credit for his imagination. That was for the best, though. It let H'vier operate unhindered by the watchful eyes that might rest on him if he were taken more seriously.

"We need people in positions of leadership," G'laer said after a moment, setting his cup (regular tea) down on the table and moving to refill his mentor's as the older man lifted it in silent instruction.

"We do," M'raz agreed, taking his tea cup back from the younger man, "But not you." This was firm.

"Why?"

"Because if we need to act, we need not muddle our politics with our actions."

G'laer almost laughed, but M'raz was serious. "I don't understand," he was forced to admit, his annoyance bleeding into his tone.

"One is the face, one is the hand. If the face is solid enough, it doesn't matter much what the hand is doing." M'raz says, his eyes getting that sparkle of amusement. It always amused him when he had something he could still teach G'laer. But that he could teach G'laer is why G'laer liked and respected him.

He still didn't like it. He liked being wingsecond. But what he liked wasn't important, not compared to everything that mattered. "Fine," he grunted as he took up his mug again. "What about H'vier?"

The older man rapped his knuckles on the table, almost a knocking. "What's your take on him?"

"He could be an asset if he chose to be. His temper's dangerous." G'laer provided his assessment clean of any personal feelings, but doesn't he always?

M'raz grunted, "Feel him out. Be reserved with what you tell him. If he's like-minded enough, I'll meet with him to see how he fits." If he fits.

The younger greenrider nodded. That was that. Now it just had to be done.
