The dragons began to hum - and he was ready.

Zadkiel took his time. Bathing. Braiding. Separating himself from the others.

It had to be done.

He couldn't remember how many times he'd Stood - it didn't matter, really. Not here. Not now. Best to treat every time like it was the first. Best to clear the mind of all the old memories. It was part of the cleaning process. Everything had to go. All that remained was wariness and watchfulness; a mindfulness of where he was and what was happening.

He filtered out with the others. He took his place well away from those he'd spoken most with. Distancing. Mental cleaning.

His gaze angled to the galleries. Familiar faces were there - but not the one he wanted. A pang of pain hit his heart and he looked away. He couldn't let that sink in. He couldn't let that cloud his non-thinking.

The eggs burst.

He watched.

A green (ill-omen), a brown, a bronze - all in rapidfire succession. The green Impressed quickly. His attention remained split between the two that wandered. More eggs twitched. Unimportant until two more hatched. Green. Blue. He sucked his teeth.

Another brown.

The green and blue were there and gone in the blink of an eye. The first brown finally chose and his attention briefly pulled that way. It would be Edyis. His thoughts twisted on themselves and burrowed deeper. Later. Congratulations would be later - if at all. He flicked a look to the Igenites again. Mother. Father. Siblings. Pahaliah. A few others in the dance troupe. The brownrider Kasdeja - she would want to leave immediately after. She caught his glance and nodded once. So many faces.

But, not-

No.

Igen swelled into being in his mind's eye. He was faintly aware of pressure in his stomach - nausea? No. Never. - and far more keenly aware of swirling sands and murmuring wind. The images shuddered at the edges, the mirage being precisely that. Would he faint? Was he dying? Did it matter? Igen was there, even if it was all in his mind.

« Of course it is happening inside your head, Z'kiel, but why on Pern should that mean that it is not real? »

No. But the thought didn't reach far enough to touch the strange mind that rose on the other side of the mirage.

« I am Ahtzudaeth and it is time to eat. »

The pins in his knees gave out. He sank slowly to them and reached out to cup the sides of the bronze's head. His forehead met that of the egg-slick beast and he took in a deep breath.

» Yes, « he relayed. » Yes, it is. «

Feeding, washing, and oiling Ahtzudaeth was a blur. He did it. He knows he did. But there was no conversation between them. There was a dim awareness of others as they came in, but his mind was gone. Elsewhere. Ahtzudaeth was picking the particulars open and prying into the places that Z'kiel would permit.

It was only later, when they were awake and the others were asleep that he could take stock of the situation.

The gold to Farideh. Browns to Keysi and Edyis and Laine. Blue to the nanny. Tomic - but probably T'mic, now. He knew nothing of the other bronze's weyrling. The smattering of blues and greens were all noted, but their faces were various shades of unfamiliar.

He sucked his teeth.

» There is no going home now, is there. « The question wasn't. Not any more. F'rain had no need of bronzes and the deal, the new and completely changed deal, had no allowance for it. He gritted his teeth.

Ahtzudaeth chuffed and clambered off his couch to seek out a bucket of meat. He cocked his head, one whirling eye fixed on the Igenite with a curious sense of omniscience. It made Z'kiel feel uneasy.

« I do not know what you are talking about. » he said. « This is home. »
