Records Room, High Reaches Weyr

Books. Scrolls. Bound hides. Maps. If it's a record pertaining to the Weyr, it's likely to be in this roughly oval room with its floor-to-ceiling cherrywood shelves, its multitude of slots for scrolls, and its wide drawers for materials that shouldn't be rolled up or folded. A scribe is usually on duty at the tall desk up front with its good view of the room, and is able to help visitors find what they're looking for via the big bound index on its rotating stand. Past the desk, several tables stand in neat rows for note-taking, each stocked with glowbaskets, scrap hide, paper and pencils. Additional lighting is provided by a many-armed wrought-iron light fixture, its glows gleaming through luxurious glass containers in fluted shapes instead of baskets.

To one side of the room, a gap between two sets of shelves outlines where another set once stood, now replaced by a tapestry-covered aperture. Peeking behind the tapestry reveals another cavern, this one likewise full of shelves, but occupied by only a few boxes of older records and a somewhat musty air of disuse. As well, two narrow but solid doors are locked when the room is unattended and a discreet staircase provides direct access from the Weyrleaders' weyrs.

There's a map spread out over one of the tables, held down by various weighty little objects - and there's a R'co leaning over it, taking notes. The blonde rider is in his leathers, flight jacket slung over the back of a nearby chair, gloves and helmet set in the chair's seat, and all with the reek of old firestone on them. He's taking notes in a small pad, scribbling away in between tracing fingers along what would look like, to those who know their geography, the Neratian coast.

While D'kan also has a riding jacket with him, it smells nothing at all like firestone. The fledgling flyer is probably just getting used to the garment, as he's still wearing it when he walks in. The weyrling heads directly toward one of the stacks and removes one of the large ledges, which he brings over to the table, careful not to disturb the other rider's map or note-taking. While getting ready to take some notes of his own, he glances over the weighted map, then up at the still unfamiliar rider. "Is it nice out that way?" D'kan asks, smiling slightly. The ledger is opened to a page near the middle, then he takes a seat and carefully inks the pen before starting to scribble notes from the page.

"Hrm?" R'co asks without looking up, continuing to trace his finger over the map to finish whatever thought he was having; then he taps down hard on one point in particular, taking note of it with a bright, toothy smile. And then he has time for the weyrling, who he regards curiously as he tucks his hair back behind his ears. "Sorry, darling, what? Is it - oh yes, is it nice there? Nerat?" A finger traces over the area on the map, and the brownrider shrugs his shoulders gently, readjusting his shirt collar. "It's one of my favourite places - it's especially good if you enjoy a bit of sunshine, a nice beach... rough sailor-types..."

Brows rising slightly, D'kan starts to grin as R'co answers his question, then he ends with a quick laugh. "I was right there with you up until the rough sailors. Spent most of my days around that type until I came here. The ones who bathe regularly are okay," he adds, smile having gone crooked. He's either clueless, or just playing around, but whatever the case, there's a brief pause as he scans the next couple lines in the borrowed ledger before he starts writing again. "Nerat's a bit out of High Reaches' area. Something special there?"

"Ah, see, that's the trick to it - you lure them into the sea, darling. Or the baths, or, well, anywhere that awful sea-funk gets washed off them, without them actually realising it's a bath. Otherwise - dear Faranth, I'd hardly want to touch one, let alone..." R'co lets that thought trail off with a roll of his eyes. He sets his notebook down on the table, pressing his hand to his cocked hip. "Other than sailors in need of baths? Flowers, fruit, berries... leaves."

"Well, I'll take your word for that," D'kan replies, still grinning, but possibly also squiring just the tiniest bit. "Maybe someday soon I can go see Nerat for myself. Just starting flying this month," he shares, mostly for the sake of sharing. It's progress! "I'm assuming those are the types of things you can only find in Nerat? They've taught us history and geography, but a whole lot of detail about what each place provides. Aside from the generics, of course."

R'co snorts, shifting the objects that hold his map down aside so he can roll it up and secure it with a tie. "Oh, the fun of being a weyrling." Sarcasm, albeit playful, colours his tone, and he gives D'kan a look to say he knows all about how fun weyrlinghood can be. "Well, I can find them in Nerat, or in Southern, and quite honestly I'm not in the mood for a trip to the latter, so..." He picks up his jacket to sling it over his arm, taking his gloves and helmet, too. "Be a weyrling dear and put my map away, won't you?" Said map is nudged across the table towards the younger brownrider. "I would, only Deveriteauxth is insisting that we leave immediately. Such a sweetheart. Thank you." He winks as he gives the weyrling a farewell wave, before picking up his notebook and turning tail to trot out.

< Ahaha! R'co's in your Weyr, challenging your comfort zones! *grins* It's nice to see that even holdbred D'kan is mostly okay with it. A short, but nice lil' scene!
