| Lake Shore, High Reaches Weyr The rest of the bowl may be barren, grass barely surviving at best, but here by the lake, it's brilliantly green in the warmer months: thickening and thriving in the silty, boulder-dotted soil just before it transitions to soft sand and thence to the cool, clear water itself. A large freshwater lake fed by a low waterfall, it not only provides warm-weather bathing space for humans and dragons, but has one end fenced off as a watering hole for the livestock in the feeding grounds. The water there is often muddier than the rest of the clear lake, whose shallows drop off abruptly several yards out into deep water, and whose edge undulates against the coarse-hewn bowl wall: here close enough to just be bramble-covered rocks, there far enough away that a narrow land bridge divides the main lake from a smallish pond. Between are several rocky outcroppings that form excellent makeshift diving points, though only one -- across the bridge -- has a set of narrow, slippery, quite possibly tempting stairs. The night is cool, moonlight lighting the clouds above with the velvety dark, star-spangled sky peeping through what few gaps there are in the cirrus cover. Lying on the damp sand is N'ky, arm behind his curl-free head as a pillow, Cailluneth with her forepaw on his waist and her own head settled onto his chest. He, in turn, has his hand on the base of her neck. He's awake, staring up at the clouds. Hana escapes from the confines of mending and sewing - even, dare it be said, embroidery, now that the day is done. A single shawl is all that is needed in the practically balmy - for High Reaches - evening, as she makes her way towards the lake. Hands free, she manages to find a couple of pebbles that can be tossed into the waters once she gets closer. Cailluneth hears the approaching person first; she raises her head and makes a sound somewhere between a chuff-bark and a growl, eyes whirling brightly turquoise. N'ky pushes himself up on his elbows to see who it is - that it's Hana has him smiling brightly. "H-hey, Hana!" A call loud enough to travel the distance to her, but not an outright shout. He beckons her over with a wave of his hand. Hana's attention is grabbed first by her name; second by the shadowed figure of weyrling and dragonet. Following attention is movement, and she turns from the direction of the water to heading towards those thus drawing her attention, "Good evening, N'ky - and.. Cailluneth, I suspect?" she calls out quietly, letting the night do part of her work for her. "You remembered her n-name." N'ky is impressed! Gently nudging his lifemate aside, he sits up and dusts the sand from his short, scruffy hair, then rubs his hand clean on the front of his thigh. The teen then gets to his feet, with the chubby little green curling up by his feet. "This is m-miss Hana, Cailluneth." She croons a raspy hello, sitting back on her haunches and stretching up to get a better, closer look; doing so, with her neck stretched out, makes her almost the same height as Hana. "And this is Cailluneth," N'ky adds to the woman, placing a loving hand on his green's shoulder. "... We shall not mention how glad I am that I got it right then," Hana suggests, a thread of laughter under the words. "Just Hana," she repeats the time-worn phrase, before offering a bit of a bob to the dragonet. "A pleasure to meet you, Cailluneth." Ah, the whole concept of exposure at work - the words are offered most honestly. "Never j-just Hana," N'ky says teasingly as his green drops back down to all fours, sitting neatly and watching with bright eyes. "I h-had heard you'd, um, s-stayed, after the Hatching... um... wh-what made you leave your Lady, Hana?" His fingers curl around Cailluneth's headknob, stroking absently as he speaks; in return, the dragonet presses against his lower leg. Hana eyes the shadowed figures a moment, before shaking her head, "Havannah and Nataniel had arranged a visit to Crom, once the Hatching was done. I... declined their invitation to stay with a family of their choice." More matchmaking, it would seem. There is a pause, and a shake of the head, "Besides - Lady Azaylia is a lovely lady who admitted a need for a pair of hands on occasion - the rest of the time, I am helping with the seamstresses." "Oh." His hand raises to knot his fingers into shorn-off curls, getting just a tentative grip on the shorter, wilder remains. They grip tight for a moment near his crown, and when he lowers his hand back to his pocket N'ky's left with hair even messier than before. "I'm glad you s-stayed. Um... wh-when Cailluneth's big enough, we'll not let a-anyone take you where you don't want, Hana." The green in her current tiny state is hardly imposing. Hana chuckles quietly, and shakes her head. "Life is, as life goes, Nicky - but here now - how have things been going for you two? You aren't hiding out here, right?" Hana asks, remaining standing, the pebbles being shifted from hand to hand. Click-click. Click-clack. Repeat and rinse. N'ky's not hiding out, no, and he shakes his head in response to that question. "No, just looking at the sky. Wh-when the weather's so nice, we'd r-rather be outside." His attention comes down to the pebbles, brown eyes squinting at them for a second. "Were you g-going to try and skim those?" "It is a nice change from winter," Hana agrees before offering a slight smile, "Skim them? No -- any attempts results in more rocks for the bottom of the lake. I do like listening to the ker-plunk of it going in though. If you want to try to skim them, however, you are more than welcome to do so," she offers, hand held out. N'ky shakes his head. "It's ok... I c-can't skim rocks. Um... I n-never picked up how." His admission comes with a shrug of his shoulders, and a shy little grin. "But I'll l-listen to you throwing them in, i-if you'd like?" Beside him, Cailluneth yawns, bowing down her front half to stretch up on her hind legs, wings expanding to their full length - longer than N'ky is tall, by now. "For a, um, l-little while, anyway. I'll have to take Cai b-back to her couch, soon." "Well, if you'd like.." Hana gives in on - not much longer is the sound of a rock kerplunking into the water, and the following mini-splash. "Are they keeping you busy, or is it all about food and .. hrm. Clean-up?" Because dragonets and nappies just don't compute. At /all/. N'ky slips one hand into his pocket, while the other remains in contact with Cailluneth. "Oh, um... cleaning, feeding, bathing, oiling, um, sleep... a-and I'm, um... studying." His teeth sink into his bottom lip, and he frowns. "W-we're getting t-tested soon, and, um..." He's worried. His gaze drops to his toes, scuffing through the sand. "H-history and maths aren't, um..." He trails off, taking another tack: "I-I don't like them." Hana wrinkles her nose, "Numbers are a bane," she agrees, "And there are reasons I am no Harper." Not the least an inability to make proper music. "I suppose it makes sense, though - you have to know who did what to whom, especially if you are dealing with a large number of groups - and then there's the numbers needed for feeding everyone," she adds, even though that last bit is rather doubtful. "I'm g-going to feel so stupid when they t-test me," N'ky admits, shoulders slumping after he shrugs them. Cailluneth bumps her muzzle against his thigh, and he sighs softly. "I'm h-hitting the hides tonight, again. That's one g-good thing about not s-sleeping so much... I can st-study when everyone e-else is asleep." Again his fingers try to run through his hair, and he huffs in frustration as they sail quickly through what's left of it. "N-numbers should be left to, um, weyrwomen and h-headladies." "And traders," Hana offers cheerfully, then shakes her head - and probably a finger as well. "Make sure you get plenty of sleep - and have a good breakfast. But if you've studying to do, I shouldn't keep you out here, and the morning starts early enough." There's a pause, then she adds, "I'm certain you'll do fine, N'ki." At least until she gets a look at him during the daytime. Then a certain shortness will probably be noticed. N'ky smiles softly at Hana, while Cailluneth croons warmly to her. "I-I'll do the best I can," he says, nodding his head as if to drive that thought into his own mind. "I sh-should go though, you're r-right." And nevermind that the chubby little dragon with him is yawning again, eyes whirling tiredly. "It was n-nice to see you, Hana. I hope you h-have a lovely evening, um... c-could you tell Mave I say hi? I-if you see her, tonight?" "Of course! Dream safe, you two..." Hana offers, before turning back the way she came and heading away from the sleepy pair. For once, the swishing of skirts seem a bit slower - too late of an evening to put effort into it. And N'ky allows a tired Cailluneth to lead the way towards the barracks, looking briefly back over his shoulder to watch Hana's progress, before his attention's all on getting his little lifemate to bed. |
