It wasn't the unfamiliar warmth of the bed he was in that surprised N'ky when he woke up the morning after the party; nor was it the feeling that the weyr he was in wasn't his own. It was the body pressed to his, the soft, dark hair he was nuzzled into, the unaccustomed feeling of bare skin on bare skin, of comfort in someone else's bed. April's bed.

He reached for Cailluneth; she was close. Comfortable, too, curled up with Darcielth just beyond the curtain that separated April's weyr from the couch.

N'ky wasn't sure what to do; he'd never woken up in someone else's bed before. Could he squirm and free his arm from where it was pinned beneath the bluerider's slight weight, without waking her up? What would he say to her when she did wake up?

Cailluneth's comforting moonlight told him it was alright, whatever happened. He believed her.

Gently, he started trying to wriggle free - but by the time he'd gained a couple of inches, April was stirring.

"Hi," she murmured sleepily, rolling over to face him... claiming those few inches he'd just won right back.

"H-hi." The urge to break away was almost as strong as the want to hold her.

"You're stuttering, Nick."

He blushed, biting down on his lip, looking at the pillow that her hair was fanned out across. "I a-always h-have done?"

April knew that was an evasive answer; he could see it in her face. "Not so much with me lately, though? What's wrong?"

Twitching uncomfortably, N'ky gave her an apologetic look as he made to pull his hold away from her; the bluerider obliged, sitting up as he did. N'ky blushed at the sight of her, picking up the blanket to hold it up to cover her very distracting bare chest. He ran his fingers through his bedhead curls, the pillow-pressed side sticking up more so than usual, and sighed.

"I m-missed the catch on p-purpose, April." Guilt feels better when it's shared, right?

She smiled, and nodded her head. "I know. I think most of us do know - but we were going to win anyway, Nick - Darcielth's faster than Cailluneth, and we already had the lead."

N'ky shook his head. "B-but that's n-not the p-point. I sh-shouldn't've d-dropped it. Whether we w-were going to w-win or lose... I sh-shouldn't have. I l-let down my w-wing, April. I sh-should've kept trying... I shouldn't h-have wanted you to win. "

April's fingers were soft and comforting on his blush-burning cheek, and, despite some part of him wanting to lean into her touch, the guilt coiled tight in his belly wouldn't let him.

"I've g-gotta go. We've got c-calisthenics soon." Shyly, he slipped from the bed, scrabbling about for his clothes. "They're m-my wing this month, April," he said over his shoulder, hopping into his underthings while trying his best not to flash too much - even though he'd just spent the night with the bluerider still in bed. "I-it's my d-duty to be l-loyal to them, and... a-and I w-wasn't."

"They won't know, Nick, not unless you tell them - are you going to?"

"I d-don't know."

"Would it make you feel better?

Would it? Possibly. It'd take the weight off his chest, but could he stand having everyone as mad at him as he imagined it would make them? Could he face Alida and tell her that he'd let them down? K'zin might take it better, but... N'ky shook his head. No, telling was worse than keeping it to himself. To himself and April.

Finally dressed, he turned around to look at the dark-haired girl, kneeling back on the bed beside her to give her one last cuddle, and a quick kiss on the cheek. "E-enjoy your day off."

Cailluneth was already awake and ready on the ledge by the time he went out to join her. « Our secret, Cai. » The words were absorbed into her moonlight, hidden in a rainbow box far out of sight. She knew he'd done it for his right reasons, and he knew she wouldn't judge him for it.

< Huh. I feel like this is a big step for N'ky, though what his destination is has yet to be seen. <3 I liked how nice and casual it was.
