| When her mother's resting comfortably, Mave sets herself back up with the pen and paper, now stained with a wrinkled damp fourth of a circle at the top. It takes several tries to clasp the writing utensil. Her fingers seem magnetized to her mouth, rubbing across thrice-touched lips like she might scrub some answer or reasoning from them. Something Nicky left behind. But... the paper sits, accusingly blank, in front of her, so she sets her thoughts aside and the pen to its use. And draws a useless, wandering circle. Erm. Her mother always has told her to face her problems. Her inked gardener nearly the same: apologize when you feel bad. The solution seems patently clear, laughing in Mave's face. She scrawls: Alida. Meet me? Can we talk? Mave summons an image of the woman's hardened face under blond, swarmed with the clipped sentences others have used to describe her. All blown away by the echo of Mave's own voice, screechy and eccentric, in her memory, sending accusations left and right. The pen dies in its spot, and Mave plants her face into the table, uncaring that both moves create a soft knick of ink across the page, below the former guard's name. In the pit of her chest, she knew that confronting this head-on was the right thing to do -- to avoid being-- that kind of person. But the pit of her stomach didn't care at all. Sighing, she turns her head, eying the page along its flat plane. Planting the other hand beneath her cheek, she props herself up enough to scribble further: I'm sorry for the bully thing. I don't know you. It wasn't fair. -- that obnoxious girl from the stables As she feeds the rolled-up note to the blue firelizard's waiting maw, Mave rocks her cheek back onto the table and contemplates what a coward she is. |
