Feeding Grounds, High Reaches Weyr

Wedged between the lake and the rest of the vast bowl are the dusty feeding grounds. Here, the well-trampled ground is contained by a sturdy wooden fence, cutting right through one end of the lake to section it off into a muddy watering hole for the animals. Several gates allow people in and out, while at the back, large overhangs of rock provide the herd -- a mixed bag of herdbeasts, wing-clipped wherries, and fat porcines -- shelter from storms or the hot sun. What grass survives is usually bloodstained, but feeding troughs are stationed around the edges of the pen.

Closer to the pens today, N'ky stands by Cailluneth, watching with quiet stillness. His hands are dug deep into his pockets, the only real movement about him being the shifting of his gaze as he follows the herdbeasts going about their dull lives, and the rippling of his curls when a gentle gust of wind toys through them. Otherwise, he's statue-still.

By his feet, Cailluneth sits rigidly, but radiates with pent-up energy; every muscle within her is coiled, ready to spring into action at the slightest kiss of pressure to the trigger holding her back. Her head whips back and forth, whirling eyes watching, watching, watching through the lower rungs of the fence that separates her from her would-be meal.

« That one. » A thick-horned herdbeast. « No. That one. » A porcine, followed by a mud-stained cow. «That one is weak. » A wherry is passed over, then a thickset 'beast. « That one has fat haunches. No - no. This one, my heart, this one! » A herdbeast. Healthy, vibrant, alive. Excited colours swirl brightly in his mind, the scents, sounds and fear of the herdbeasts becoming abstract impressions that, despite being nothing but suggestive, are crystal clear to both Cailluneth and her bond. Red spills forth as she finds a likely target, ribbons of claret entwined with lifeblood crimson, painstaking detail shared as she imagines canines piercing soft flesh, straight through to the jugular. No hesitancy. No toying with her prey. (Cailluneth to N'ky)

N'ky's statuesque pose is broken as he chokes on the metallic tang of blood that suddenly seems to fill his mouth; it coats his tongue, lines his cheeks, suffocatingly hot as it trickles to the back of his throat, replaced afresh as the pulse of life brings a new wave of bitter copper. His hand smacks against his mouth as he dry-heaves, leaning forward to retch and gag. He knows as well as she that he could ask her to stop - but he doesn't.

... so she doesn't. Cailluneth presses against his calf, warm dragon hide to his thick trousers, a comforting tail curled around his leg and wings half-flared, tensed, whirling eyes spinning fast with the thrill of the hunt. That it's a mere simulation matters not.

The image evolves, strengthened by excitement; jaws clamped tight, paws pinning a flailing beast, the frantic beat of a desperate heart - lubdublubdublubdublubdublub dub lub dub, lub dub, lub dub. lub dub. lub dub... lub dub... lub dub... lub... dub. lub... Fading life. Ended struggle. A final twist of a powerful jaw rings with a bone-snapping CRACK, and all is still. Tension fades. The pounding red recedes, satisfied, retreating to its primal cave as moonlight creeps forth with its silver glow. Cool, clean, washing away the carnage, calm and sweet, and soothing. (Cailluneth to N'ky)

Breathing heavily, N'ky looks up from where he's bent double with his hands on his knees, glancing to Cailluneth with water-filled eyes. He spits, surprised at the lack of blood colouring his saliva, then rubs the back of his hand across his mouth as he straightens up. Fingers curl around Cai's headknob, stroking as he recovers, drawing strength from her. « Too much, » he admits weakly. Yes, he could feel her keenness, her eagerness to experience such things for real, but it's all too much for the young rider.

Comforting warmth and concern blankets N'ky's mind, Cailluneth reaching out to soothe the discomfort, yet laced with want, with the desire to ease the primal urge to kill. (Cailluneth to N'ky)

It's inescapable. That urge washes over to N'ky, filling him with a longing for the very thing that's just driven him to illness. He heaves again, though gentler, this time, closing his eyes in an attempt to focus his mind. "I have an idea," he says softly.

The plan forms; the dark tunnels of the inner weyr, the slithering of tunnelsnakes against frigid stone, caught in the light of a glow basket. « Tonight, Cailluneth... » (N'ky to Cailluneth)

Satisfaction runs through the young green's body, a deep, throaty hum vibrating along her throat to shudder down to wingtips, tail and toes. « Tonight. » There is promise there - promise and secrecy, and satisfaction. So much satisfaction. Cailluneth then bumps her slender muzzle gently off her weyrling's knee; it's time to go find real food, to satisfy the hunger that the imaginary hunt has awoken within her.

This was downright poetic in its ferocity and was a downright thrill to read! There's always focus on the weyrlings training their dragons, but it's nice to see the dragon also preparing her rider for things to come. Nicely written.

Cailluneth is so adorable, and yet so... ferocious. Love it. XD

Beautiful. Wicked. And definitely sweet in its own way. That was wonderful, N'ky. I especially like that rather than just suffer through the first couple of months, N'ky came up with a solution. A solution that has a possibility of going south, but... Cailluneth is so cute! ;3;
