Logs:I'll Show Them

From NorCon MUSH
I'll Show Them
RL Date: 10 October, 2008
Who: Kasadel, Nakasha
Involves: High Reaches Weyr
Type: Vignette
What: Kasadel receives a letter. Two letters, actually.
When: Day 22, Month 12, Turn 17 (Interval 10)

The letter arrived during what everyone surmised was the last seven before the hatching; in reality, it was about three days before the hatching. Both a lifetime, and no time at all.

It reached Kas in the mid-afternoon, when he was finishing off some errands about the weyr. He took a breather, leaning up against a wall in the lower caverns to read it, surprised at having received it - after all, wouldn't he be seeing his family in no time at all?

Or... not.

Son,
Evelin has gone into early labor. She's not strong, and the healers are concerned. Your mother is beside herself with worry, and so is your brother.
We won't be able to make it to the weyr for you, I'm sorry. Your mother couldn't possibly leave at this point, and I won't leave her, either.
We wish you the very best of luck,
Father.

He felt the piece of hide slip from his hand, landing on the floor near his feet. He wanted to stamp on it. Evelin. Fucking Evelin. He'd never had much time for his oldest brother's wife, simpering Evelin only a few turns older than he was, but full of airs because she was going to marry Brennan, and eventually be the Holder's wife - and he was just Kas, the youngest boy.

And now she was ruining everything, yet again, because of course his mother wouldn't leave when her first grandchild was about to be born. Of course. Never mind her son: grandchild!

He put his foot down on the piece of hide, angrily mashing it into the floor, noticing vaguely as he did so that there was a second piece of hide with it, something he hadn't noticed until now. He leaned down, picking it up and smoothing it between fingers to read.

Kas,
Father just told me that we're not coming. Stupid Evelin. I bet she did it on purpose, because she wasn't going to get to come. Cow. I've never been to a weyr, or seen a hatching, and now I'll probably never get to go.
And I miss you. I know why you went, but that's not the point. You could've taken me with you. It's lonely without you, here. Everyone else is all busy and grown up, and I know you're grown up, too, but it's different. They're older. I mean - Bren's going to be a father! I know he's the oldest so maybe it's not surprising, but you know what I mean.
I hope you'll visit, riding your great big dragon and impressing everyone.
Love,
Nakasha

Despite himself, he smiled. His little sister - true, not much more than a turn younger, but still little in comparison - was a spitfire. He missed her, too. They'd been friends. He'd fended off the boys when she started getting curves (until she threatened to hit him over the head), and helped her practice her dancing, her lessons, her spitting (mother hadn't been thrilled at that last). He hadn't realised how much he'd been looking forward to seeing her, until now.

Stupid Evelin. Cow. Hag. Bitch.

I'll show them, he told himself. They'll regret it, when they miss me Impressing bronze. When everyone knows my name, because I'm so important, but they weren't there. And then I'll go and get Kash, and bring her here.

The idea pleased him. He tucked Nakasha's letter into his pocket, and kicked his father's all the way down the corridor, eventually abandoning it in a dusty corner. He didn't need them there, anyway. He was grown up, like Kash said, and didn't need anyone.
