Kitchen, High Reaches Weyr

The kitchens of High Reaches Weyr are contemporary, spare and simple in design, free of clutter. The sleek surfaces are a hallmark of the current Pernese style - polished marble and granite, metalwork, and woods. The background colors of the kitchen are light and neutral, allowing for bold tone accessories to take center stage. The lighting and entryway opening treatments are low-profile and minimalist. The hearths have been fitted with modern equipment and simple, sleek metalwork to add an up-to-date touch to the heavily used areas.

The polished granite counters are long and wide, allowing for ample work space. The woodwork is lightly stained, bringing out the natural hues in the grain. A simple cording, in the same bold color as the accessories, borders each cabinet door, accenting the room. Two large islands break up the kitchen into work areas: baking center, butchery, vegetable and side center, and the serving organization center. The floor is tiled with large marble squares, each section carrying a different, yet complimentary color to direct the flow of traffic. The entryway into the living cavern has been expanded to fit two doors - in and out - each marked with its own identifying color that matches the tiles just inside the doors, to keep collisions from occurring. The cavern itself has been expanded to include breakfast nooks, where residents can sit to eat, while leaving the main kitchen free from tables and the traffic that accompanies a busy Weyr.

It's getting closer to lunchtime, but not quite there yet. The kitchen is bustling with activity, the cooks and their assistants are running to and fro, shouting orders and throwing things together last minute. Jaeni seems to have snuck undetected, for now. She passes by one of the island counters, snags several cookies off a tray and ducks into one of the eating nooks without looking to even see if there's another person seated there.

And already there is Leova, one of those new people who's hanging around the Weyr lately with a white-stranded knot on her shoulder, but one who's already figured out where some of the good stuff is to be had. She glances up from her meatroll mid-bite, gives Jaeni a look, and and silently pushes the water pitcher her way as greeting.

In amongst the bustle and through it comes a dazed and dusty looking Milani. She fetches up alongside that occupied nook for a moment, taking a deep breath then lifts up a hand to brush over her hair and makes a face.

Jaeni gives Leova a surprised look, apparently not having expected her to be there. Her eyes dart between the water pitcher and the other girl, then she holds out one of her treats. "Cookie?" She offers, popping one into her own mouth. Milani's arrival next to their table is met with a closed smile and a little wave.

Leova's own brows go up, and she swallows before saying, "Thanks." Taking the cookie and turning it over in her fingers, she adds, "What kind is it?" just in time to see Jaeni greet Milani, and then Milani herself. She straightens up some.

Milani rubs at her face next, leaving dust smears in the wake of her fingers. "Jaeni, hey there." And she focuses on Leova for a moment blinking a few times. "Aren't you supposed to be out in the pens?" she musters after a moment then gives a wry grin and slides in to the nook as well. "Cookies and drinks. Both of those look good. Shells my throat is /coated/ with dust!"

"Sugar, I think. Right?" Jaeni says after she swallows, turning one of the cookies over in her hand. "Yeah." Another one of those stolen cookies is offered, this time to Milani. "We've got cookies and..." Now she tips the pitcher towards her and sees the water inside. "Water."A glance is given towards Leova and then to the assistant. "Oh, my name is Jaeni by the way. Nice to have snack time with you!" She says cheerfully.

Leova gives that newly identified Jaeni a longer, trying-to-memorize-her look, and then an answering smile. "Leova. L'sen brought me." But Milani's question's out there: "Dragon decided he absolutely had to use the pens right then and there. They said to go change? 'Course, they also said to have a big breakfast beforehand," and there's her smile again: yes, she fell for it.

"Oh thanks Jaeni!" Milani beams across at the blonde and takes that cookie, munches a big bite out of it with clear relief and gratitude. "Ohh, well yeah, that'd be a good idea," the assistant says sympathetically and props her chin up on her hand observing the other two. "Pen duty's messy. Very messy. Sounds like a busy day all around then so far?"

"Thanks for the water, Leova." Jaeni stretches the L out, testing the new name to know. "L'sen? Don't think I've ever heard of him. Is he cute?" She asks, smile perky. She pops another cookie in her mouth, chewing it up real good while she listens to the other conversation. "Yeah, pen duty seems like it gets your clothes really messy. Can't get those stains out once they set in."

"Good thing about the overalls," Leova agrees about the mess. "Didn't quite lose that breakfast, but it was a close thing," and she has a longer drink of water to wash down even the memory. "Cute, though. L'sen... I guess you'd say so. Talks a lot. If you like that sort of thing. Cheerful."

"I think he's pretty cute," Milani opines bluntly. "Those eyes y'know." And her mouth curls up in a wicked smile, eyes dancing. "And good you didn't lose your breakfast Leova. I used to stick to just mint tea before I had pen duty. Glad I don't have to do that one anymore!" Blithely she plows through the rest of her cookie and licks the sweetener off her fingers. "Anyone else new and cute coming in on Search?"

Carisandra comes into the kitchen from the living cavern.

"What color?" Jaeni asks, turning curiously to Milani. "I'll have to see for myself one of these days." She wrinkles her nose at further discussion of pen duty. "Glad I've only had it a handful of times since I cam here." New and cute? Her head turns back to Leova again. "Yeah, you're in the barracks! Anybody interesting keeping those cots next to you warm at night?"

Leova gives Milani a quizzical look, then smiles back a little wider. "I'll remember the mint tea. But it was a little dark to be seeing his eyes," her tone saying, 'it was a little strange.' Or more than a little. And as Jaeni keeps on about that sort of thing, she runs a hand through her hair uncomfortably, pausing to undo a tangle. "There's this tailor. It looks like he can, um, sew. Really well. If you like that sort of thing. Doesn't snore too loud either." Leova adds, "Most nights, anyway."

"Blue," Milani pipes up and hops up briefly to get a glass to pour water into and returns to serve herself from the pitcher on the table in the nook. "Aleudre," she supplies a name for the tailor. "Very cute. Good kisser too. If you like that sort of thing." Grin.

Carisandra steps into the kitchen entry and tries to peek around the edge of it to see what's going on. Her eyes are darting around to find the cook and the assistants first. She remains in the entry for the moment, still debating whether to boldly step into the kitchen or not. What the heck. Laundry isn't *that* bad. Besides, they're talking about- stuff. "Hi" she greets, hands held behind her back as she walks casually towards that nook.

"Oh, blue is nice!" Jaeni decides quickly, but rolls her eyes at Leova's description of Aleudre. "That sort of thing doesn't make a person 'cute'. That just makes them useful. I know him already. He can be a pain." When Carisandra arrives, she twists around in the seat a little bit to say hello. "Hey! Been awhile, heard you got stuck with all the laundry?"

That quip of Milani's pulls an unwilling chuckle from Leova. She shakes her head, not exactly in disagreement, eyes crinkling around the corners. "Does he know you think so?" and to Jaeni, "How's he a pain? Just the complaining or something else?" She finally tries a bite of the cookie, savoring it, leaving her only able to give Carisandra a curious nod when the girl approaches.

"Yeah," Milani's answer is simple and blunt and she smiles back at Leova broadly. "He's not my boyfriend though." Good-naturedly, easy-going and she looks over at Jaeni curiously and sips from her glass. "Oh that's better, much better. So dusty in those back caverns!"

With a shrug and another glance around the kitchen to see who's where, Carisa almost runs to the nook and makes herself as small as possible once she's near it. "Not all the laundry. Just lots of it. Last time I try to get some sweets out of that particular cupboard. And I'm still stuck mending nothing but socks right now." Her nose wrinkles. "Boring stuff. What's interesting right now?"

Leova has a quick second bite of the cookie, taking time to chew, making it last. Then she says with a straight face, "I figure the pens ought to be pretty interesting around now." One wait-for-it pause later, "If you like that sort of thing."

"We're all goofing off before going back to real work? Seems like you're doing it too?" Jaeni notes, grinning as she totally shifts in her seat. "He's a pain because... he liks to pick on you if at all possible. He's one of /those/. Sometimes he's nice, sometimes he's annoying." There's a lift of her shoulders and she finishes off the last of her cookies. "Pens are a bloody mess."

"True, he can do that," Milani muses thoughtfully in answer to Jaeni. "But he's sweet under all that. And very easy on the eyes." She tilts her glass back again, takes another swallow and props her elbows on the table then bursts out laughing at Leova's remark. "I /don't/ like that sort of thing. Like plenty of /other/ things, but not /that/ sort of thing."

Carisandra grins suddenly. A mischievous grin. "When you put it like that, I suppose your right." She completely ignores Leova's comment about the pens. Her eyes go between Jaeni and Milani. "Who are you talking about?" she asks, not bothering to hide the curiosity.

"Thanks for the warning," Leova says to Jaeni, only to find herself with a rare, full-fledged grin, amber eyes bright beneath her rusty, tangly hair as she watches Milani laugh. She doesn't say anything more, just pours herself some more water and then leans back to drink it, letting her gaze roam among the others with a lingering smile.
