>---< Eastern Bowl, High Reaches Weyr >--------------------------------------<
Ringed by rough granite walls to all sides but one, this end of the huge
bowl narrows from the even broader plain to the west, continuing the ever
so slight downward slope toward the blue and green of the Weyr's lake and
surrounding foliage. More open to sun and wind than the western bowl, but
less frequented when there aren't weyrlings in residence, the bowl's
grassy tufts keep the topsoil in place and thicken into a bloodstained
meadow within the feeding pens that adjoin the lake.
At the base of the surrounding cliffs lie entrances to several caverns,
including the dragon infirmary and the weyrling barracks: the former to
the northwest near where the spires begin, the latter opposite to the
southwest. Both archways are large and dark enough for any dragon to pass
through, but it's the infirmary's that is haunted by faint smells of
redwort and numbweed, as though over generations they have seeped into the
very stone. To the southeast, between the weyrling area and the lake,
there are a handful of structures built into the floor of the bowl,
standing out amidst otherwise an empty space.
High winds whip through the bowl and whistle up the walls around the
spires.

>-------------------------------------< 16D 2M 39T I10, winter afternoon >---< Patience has never been one of Akluseth's virtues. The sharp winds that whip through the otherwise sunny afternoon don't much help the brown's attempts to sit still as his rider adjusts and twists the fleece lined straps with deft movements checking and rechecking every strap and buckle until satisfied . « Don't see why we have to still keep practicing flaming in this. » Akluseth mutters miserably, the crests of his watery voice tipped with ice. He seems particularly unbothered by the idea that anyone might hear them. Patience? Quarinth has none of that. He has decided that he wants to make it out to the bowl today no matter what, even if he really shouldn't. Should not doesn't mean he will not, so, if that means sneaking out while S'rin is eating - well, that's just an opportunity that he couldn't miss. The little blue is trucking along well, « Practice flaming? » Oh, his interest is totally piqued and he can't keep his excitement to himself. So far, there's no sign of S'rin, but with the bubbly excitement coming from the blue it probably won't be long until he realizes the blue isn't where he ought to be. Whirling eyes focus, the brown craning his neck to stare at the tiny blue. His muzzle lowering to get a better view of Quarinth, possibly still amused by the novelty of tiny dragons. « You will learn how, when your bigger. Gets tedious. » Akluseth states, though his curiousity seems to be piqued. « You ditched your human? » Akluseth wonders as the dark-eyed rider turns and arches a brow at the little lone blue. So big. So so big. Quarinth stops in his tracks as he's stared at by that huge bulk of a brown, as though suddenly re-realizing that he isn't actually nearly as big as he thinks he is. « It'd never be tedious! » He seems certain of this, as sure as he was of making it to the bowl, which he did! Look, here he is! « Ditched? No. He wouldn't have let me come this far, so I just waited until he was eating... » Really, he ought not to tell the whole truth, but there it is. « I was sure there was something exciting out here, and here you are! Practicing flaming! » About that time is when S'rin comes running from the direction the blue came from and just looks flustered. A steamy breath is huffed at the little blue through those nostrils. Akluseth's teeth baring in a draconic grin. « Guess it can be exciting, » Akluseth notes and not without a warm wash of pride. « I can show you, but you gotta promise not to try it until they tell you it is ok to do so. » Edyis shakes her head when she spots the blonde, and with a very soft breath out, "Let me guess, overslept?" She must not be privy to the draconic conversation otherwise it might be a very different reaction. « I've never seen it, so of course it's exciting! » Quarinth is quick to assert to Akluseth and takes another few quick steps towards the brown. It's obvious that the blue is running out of energy, but never the less, he's going to get the best position to watch and that's much closer than he is. « I won't! » He quickly adds, just about the time S'rin catches up and gives Edyis a shake of his head in response. "He was sleeping! So I went to get something to eat, and halfway through..." He gives a bit of a glower to the blue, but Quarinth's having so much fun it's hard to be mad for too long. "How did he get so far without being seen?" He really doesn't seem to think it's possible. Edyis squints at the newly minted bluerider, and then eyes her lifemate and the blue. "You haven't quite figured out how to keep tabs on him yet up here have you?" Edyis taps her temple with a sympathetic look afforded the young male. « Seriously man, if you do. Bad stuff happens, and if you don't chew the stone right, it makes you sick and you loose your lunch everywhere. » Helpfully the sensation of up-chucking is shared for emphasis. The brownrider exhales then, breath clouding in the air. "Come on, we'll walk you back to the weyrling area. I'm guessing he's probably going to be like that one then." She notes thumbing at the lumbering brown who splays his wings for balance as he steps easily. S'rin gives a quick shake of his head in response to Edyis, "No. I mean, I try, but it's not easy." He seems more than a little frustrated at the fact that Quarinth got so very far before he even noticed at all. But, no trauma has happened and the blue was found, so he's a little calmer now. "He was like that too?" He asks, looking at Akluseth. Quarinth, however, is completely enthralled by the brown - his size, his voice, what he's saying - everything is so interesting! « Just any stone? Like this one? » Quarinth finds some stone laying around and pokes at it to indicate it. His wings flare, before settling and he doesn't even seem phased by the idea of throwing up his lunch. That too, would be an adventure. Oh dear. Edyis exhales, tilting her head at the weyrling pair. "Akluseth was always getting into things, he didn't mean to but well, things just sort of happen around him. Still do to some extent. You are responsible for him, though, and trust me if something happens it's hard to forgive yourself for it." « No has to be fire stone, and you gotta wait until your teeth are strong enough to handle it. You'll learn to fly first, though. » And here to Akluseth is oh so helpful sharing a view of a warm southern beach from the air, complete with the feel of the wind in his wings. S'rin tucks his hands into his pockets and looks suitably chastised, his gaze falling to the ground and a long sigh escaping him. "I know, I know. I don't want anything to happen to him at all." He says, drawing in another sigh and adding, "He's such a handful." He isn't complaining, but it is what it is and the blue's definitely kept him on his toes. The feeling must get to Quarinth as the blue trots over to S'rin and tries to press his eyeridge against the hand for forgiveness, even if his attention is still on what the brown's saying. « That sounds like it's so far away. Are you sure I can't do it yet? » For flying, oh, he's so interested in that too. « I can't wait! » Akluseth's trembling rumble sounds suspiciously like laughter. Edyis too can't help but smirk just a teensy bit. "I can't tell you it gets easier, Akluseth so far as I can tell is just as much trouble as he was the day he hatched." So wry that smile of hers. « It will be sooner than you think, you'll give yours plenty to keep him educated in the meantime. » A wash of teal waters and silvery bubbles accompanies the thought. There's definitely a reason that Quarinth shouldn't be out so far, for every step he takes it gets more obvious that he's growing more physically tired. He just doesn't have the stamina yet, to go as far as his mind might like. « Not soon enough. He tells me no a lot. » Comes the somewhat grumpy thought, along with the scent of musty tomes. "Quarinth always wants to go out far, but he's already too big to carry back. It was 'cute' for a while, but now..." Well, it's starting to get wearing. Edyis grins, "Akluseth did that too, never knew when he was tired. Too cold though to let him nap out here for long. Akluseth rumbles and the former scribe laughs as the route they walk leads them back to the weyrling barracks. "I've got a small practice net in my gear, wouldn't be very dignified," she notes. « There's other stuff to learn between now and then, Olveraeth will teach you lots. » Quarinth seems to be doing alright, so far, the blue trucking along beside S'rin and continuing to try and get those rubs against his eyeridges. "It is way too cold out here to want to be out for long at all. But, Quarinth doesn't seem to mind at all." S'rin muses, and grins at the idea of using a net. "We'll see how it goes. He is getting a little more energy to go farther and he did get a good nap." He muses, as Quarinth keeps an eye on the big big brown. « But, sitting and learning is boring! I want to do things! » « Man, do I hear you. » Akluseth rumbles in agreement, «All that sitting still, but you gotta learn it. » The brown's tail swishes behind him, as though antsy from the mere thought. « But that stuff helps you do this stuff. » And there's images and sensations shared from flying with Snowdrift, the burble of flame as it spouts between teeth, basking in the sun on a warm beach after a long day's duties. Edyis nods pensively, hands tucking into her jacket pockets. "Everything you dreamed?" « But why does it have to be so boring? » Quarinth complains, it's barely the beginning and he's already complaining so much. « I want to do that, without all this boring stuff. » The blue doesn't seem so sure that all that boring stuff is necessary. He'll fly, he was -meant- to fly. S'rin on the other hand, shrugs his shoulders. "I didn't know what to expect, honestly. I didn't dream of being a rider.." He says, watching the little blue beside him, before adding, "But, now I can't imagine it any other way. « Thems the breaks. » Akluseth agrees, woefully. Edyis, on the other hand, listens, with a half smile on her face as they walk. "He's a fine blue, good clutch really," She notes chin tipping up to look at the sky above. "Don't think there's anything under Rukbat that can prepare a person for impression, but you seem to be holding up ok." Quarinth flicks his tail idly, as though that was a form of pouting to get his way. He leans a little more on S'rin as they walk, though he keeps getting pushed back to his feet. « How far could you walk when you were my size? » He wonders, as weariness is starting to creep in, and figuring the brown surely remembers. Right? S'rin just grins and nods, "Yeah, he's a great blue. I am holding up alright, when I don't lose him right from under my nose. He is a sneaky one." He says with a grin. It seems like the brown has to confer a moment to find the answer to the little blue's question. « I walked a lot, I swim in the lake too. » Silver fish dancing and whirling about in the watery currents of his thoughts. « You'll be able to go farther the bigger you get. » Edyis nods as they reach the edge of the weyrling area. "You'll figure it out, everybody does. But this is as far as we go." « I'm already pretty big. Not as big as you, though. » Quarinth decides, he's at least bigger than the greens after all. They're small, even for him! He definitely conveys his excitement about swimming, pausing in step as S'rin does. "Oh, I'm sure we will. Thanks for keeping an eye on him, I'll try and do better..." He says with a sigh, nudging the little blue towards the direction of the barracks. "Pretty cold out here, really should go back in. Thanks again, Edy. You're a life saver." « Doubt you'll ever be as big as me kid, but you can try. » the brown rumbles deeply amused by the tiny blue. Edyis laughs, "Don't mention it. It does get easier, eventually." And that must serve as their farewell. Because she's pulling herself up, and the pair launches into the sky shortly after. |
