| Living Cavern, High Reaches Weyr Stalactites hang high above this enormous cavern like a jagged chandelier or an inversion of the Spires themselves, but shadows cling to them instead of light. Below lie great tables arranged in rows, each large enough to serve a fighting wing, while in the nooks and alcoves around the cavern's edge sit more sensibly-sized tables, from six- and eight-seaters down to intimate spots for just a couple of diners. The only really open space is around the kitchen entrance, smelling of food and rarely quiet, and by the nearby serving tables with their long buffet of the day's offerings. Tapestries on the smooth walls -- some faded and others newly woven -- only slightly mute the sea of sound when a meal is in full swing, but they add cheerfulness augmented by the glowlight from wall sconces and the centerpieces of each table. Still, shadows always creep along the ceiling and into the mouths of the exits -- the myriad small hallways at one end of the cavern and, at the other, the twisting tunnel to the bowl near an array of coathooks and and hatracks -- and late at night, when the glows are allowed to dim, the chamber can seem very dark indeed. Spring is finally settling in about the weyr. The afternoon sun creating golden streamers through the fog, but there is a sense of life in the place. The living cavern in the afternoon is as lively as ever, workers and riders filtering in between duties to catch a moment's peace and a meal. Edyis for her own part takes the opportunity to eat and contunue working over the better bits of a letter on a wax tablet. Ocassionaly looking up to greet people as they pass by. L'sha trudges into the living cavern, having finally gotten Rillaeth down for a nap, at least for now. He looks exhausted, as the weyrling training has recently increased in intensity, again. He zombie-walks over to the serving tables and begins to pick out food, quite a large quantity, in fact, onto a plate. His body seems to be operating on auto-pilot, heavily lidded eyes barely paying attention to what he's piling on the plate. He pours himself a small cup of wine, then glances around the cavern for any familiar faces. Eventually, he spies one and heads over to her. Edyis smiles when she spots the new weyrling, arranging papers and tablets to make room for the young man. "L'sha, isn't it now? How is your lifemate?" She tries the new version of his name uncertianly. "Would you care to join me?" L'sha seems to need effort to put on his usual cheery face, smiling warmly at the girl he remembers from Candidacy. "Hello, Edyis. Certainly." He sets his plate and cup down and collapses into a chair and sits there for a moment silently. Weariness has apparently caused temporary memory loss. "What was I about to say? Oh yes, Rillaeth! She's just lovely, getting bigger every day. She's almost longer than I am tall now. How are you doing these days? I was so sorry to hear that you were left on the sands at the hatching. Keeping busy, I see?" He nods at the papers and tablets, then begins to shovel food into his mouth at an alarming pace. Edyis smiles, "Must be exhausting, looking after something so big all the time." She responds, "I don't mind it so much actually, being left on the sands. I was able to find work thanks to Aishani's words with the headwoman. I'm to work in the records room." She eyes the shoveling with concern, "You may want to slow down lest you choke." L'sha does slow down, chewing and swallowing the mouthful of food. "Sorry," he says, "I guess I'm used to eating as much as I can as fast as I can before Rillaeth needs me or the next round of training starts. I don't mind looking after Rillaeth, really, but stack all the exercise and training on top of it and it starts to get really tiring. That's nice for you, though! Sounds pretty much like what I did before I was Searched. I was Tajent's assistant for a while. Which pretty much meant that I did all the menial tasks that he and the headwoman were too busy for." He takes a sip of wine and munches on some tubers almost absent-mindedly. Edyis smiles. "I can only imagine the exhaustion that follows the work, but do take care of yourself. You are the only lifemate Rillaeth has you know. Besides I would be sorry not to see your cheerfull face about this place." For search and tasks she nods, "It does come with the advantage of extra education. The lessons are - thrilling." There's a tilt of her head as she smiles, "How did your family take the news of your impression?" L'sha cants his own head to the side in response, "Awww, that's so sweet of you to say, thank you! But it's not like the training's gonna kill me or anything. Like they say, 'that which doesn't kill me makes me stronger.' Hmm, thrilling. Not the word I'd use for lessons, but to each her own, I suppose. My parents are both riders, so they were very proud, of course. You shouldn't give up, though, this time your dragon wasn't on the sands. There's always another clutch. Not that I thought you were giving up or anything." Edyis laughs, "It's not the training but your eating habits that concern me," she teases. "Must have been nice growing up with rider parents, might give you an advantage as far as what to expect from weyrlinghood. It's not giving up - I am just not sure I am meant to be a dragon rider. They are strange creatures dragons, and I'm only just begining to understand why everyone is so enamored with them. It seems like standing is a duty here though, so who knows. Hopefully it will be some time before another clutch is on the sands." L'sha nods. "Well, I was mostly raised by nannies, but they did give me a few pointers. Of course, that still didn't prepare me entirely for being a weyrling. I'm always surprised about something I've learned that I never knew, or things that I thought I knew that were completely wrong. And I grew up surrounded by dragons. I think --" his thought is interrupted by a grinning teenage weyrbrat who has sneaked up behind L'sha, suddenly covering the weyrling's eyes with his hands. He cries, "Guess who!" Edyis laughs, "See you can appriciate lessons too." The young woman stops entirely as someone covers L'sha's eyes with a laugh. L'sha's mouth drops open in surprise, then turns into a grin, then twists into a mockery of concentration. "Hmmm, is it K'del?" The 'brat behind him giggles, then says, "Nope!" L'sha 'thinks' again, scratching his chin with a finger. "K'zin?" The boy behind him says, "No, silly, one more guess!" L'sha folds his arms over his chest and declares, "Well, then, it must be Garen." The 'brat cries, "Correct!" and gives L'sha a hug. Garen pulls a chair up next to the weyrling and tries to plant a kiss on L'sha's cheek, but only gets a faceful of hand. "Ah-ah-ah," says L'sha, "You know the rules. No touchie the weyrlings." Garen pouts and slumps in the chair. "That's so unfair." L'sha rolls his eyes. "For you or me? Trust me, I get the short end of the stick here. Do you remember Edyis? She was a Candidate, too." He looks at Edyis and hooks a thumb at Garen. "Garen here was left on the sands as well." Edyis grins at the game, and smiles at the couple. Well she's fairly sure it's a couple rather than siblings at least. "Garen, It's good to see you again, how are you doing now that the hatching is over?" She gives L'sha an odd look, "Even a peck on the cheek is prohibited?" L'sha shrugs and nods. "Pretty much. I don't want to take any chances." Garen rolls his eyes at L'sha. "Pfft, thanks for reminding me that you Impressed and I didn't." The weyrbrat smiles warmly at Edyis. "Oh, I'm fine, back to the stables for me. Not as exciting as Standing, but it passes the time. I hope I can Stand for the next clutch." L'sha grins at Garen. "You'd better. And you better Impress a blue." He winks at the other boy, then pauses as his eyes unfocus. He sighs and stands. "I'm sorry, Rillaeth is stirring, must run. You want the rest of this?" He motions to his half-finished plate. Edyis frowns ever so slightly, "One more advantage for those of us left I suppose." A wink tossed at Garen. She perks up a bit at the mention of the stables, "How are the new mares that came in with the Nabol tithes fairing? One was actually from Esvay Hold stock, and the other decended from some famous racing stock." She giggles, "Or Brown, some of the browns are quite lovely." She smiles. "Take care L'sha, hope to talk again soon when things aren't so busy for you." L'sha wiggles his fingers at Garen and Edyis in a farewell wave. "Nice talking with you, Edyis! See you around!" Garen waves to L'sha, "Bye, honey! Thanks for the rest of your plate!" He attacks the remainder of the weyrling's dinner and becomes absorbed in runner talk with Edyis. |
