| Infirmary, High Reaches Weyr Two sets of double doors, one from the the inner caverns and a recently built set from the dragon infirmary, lead into the unnaturally hushed human infirmary. Despite fastidious cleaning, the scent of redwort and numbweed has long since soaked into every smooth-carved surface, along with other, subtler medicinal smells. Pristinely made cots are lined up against the walls; most of them are left open to view, but some in the back are surrounded by curtains for delicate procedures or critical patients. About halfway between the two entrances is the counter for the healers on duty; it guards the entrance to the storage rooms just beyond, their shelves and cabinets lined with meticulously labeled bottles, boxes, jars, and even vats of supplies. The Weyrhealer's office is also here, along with another side room for mixing up medicines and the like. It's not quite cold enough for the early-season snowfall outside to actually stick to anything, but that doesn't mean it isn't still chilly. Here in the Infirmary, however, the only reminder of the outside temperature is in the slightly muddy footprints someone has tracked in from the dragon infirmary - foodprints Madilla is currently overseeing the removal of, at the hands of one of the young infirmary aides. "Mop it up," she instructs, one hand resting upon the edge of the admissions desk, which is currently otherwise unattended. "Please. I won't have people slipping on my floor." H'kon's own boots are relatively clean, apart from whatever traffic dirt he's tracked in in his way through the caverns; the aide, at least, need not be overly worried about that. He does come bearing another sign of the changing weather, however, suggested in opened-mouth breathing, and far more clearly evident in, first, the choking attempt at a sniff for the expected infirmary smell that brings a cough. Not a phlegmy cough, so much as a reaction to unexpected air blockage. This could be far worse. As much as Madilla seems intent upon keeping the floor of her Infirmary clean, she's too much a healer to fail to be instantly alerted to that sniff. And so - she turns, letting her hand drop from the desk as she swivels around. Her gaze is not intense so much as appraising, and only in a way that speaks of genuine, warm-hearted concern. "That," she says, as she takes a step forward towards him, "sounds uncomfortable. It's just in your nose?" The, "Healer," that H'kon does finally manage is a bit late in coming, but he gives it nonetheless, complete with inclination of his head before he's looking up (as so often happens) to Madilla as she approaches. An attempted sigh for his condition is somewhat foiled by said condition, and with another awkward noise, he instead brings a hand upward to gesture toward his eyes. "And up," like the first word spoken, is a bit squeezed out. "I imagine it will pass, I was hoping only for something to ease the symptom. I've no time to seek out home remedies, the next few days." "Sit in the bathing caverns for a while before you sleep tonight," is Madilla's initial advice, made as she crosses the rest of the distance towards him. "The steam will help. I don't believe for a second you're too busy to do that. A bowl of boiling water and a towel will work just as well." In someone else, it might come across as chiding, but this healer seems nothing but genuine. Her hand lifts, reaching for his face, though before she touches him, she's polite enough to say, "May I?" H'kon doesn't draw back, though his eyes do narrow at the initial reach. He looks over his shoulder, back toward the caverns, then to the beds, and finally sets his stance, feet a bit wider apart, and nods. And closes his eyes in preparation. "If there is anything... aromatic - I'm not certain how to describe it - that could be inhaled, I would appreciate that as well." As if the visit is already over, though the only indication of impatience, otherwise, is a slight rock up to the balls of his feet, and back down. Madilla's fingers are warm, at least, as she gently massages the pressure points of his sinuses. "Of course," she agrees, placidly. If she's noted the way he rocks on his feet (and she probably has), she's too polite to comment on it. Instead, fingertips still in contact with his skin, she adds, "I can give you some tea, too. Do you have this kind of problem frequently? The change of the season?" And, "H'kon, isn't it. You Impressed with-- B'tal. And W'chek." "Regularly," H'kon specifies. "Once, in the winter. Perhaps not every turn. And not always on the change. I seldom need to come here, but I was... unprepared." The only signs of discomfort, as she prods, come in the furrowing of his brow. Although he'll be mouth-breathing in her face for the duration. Green eyes are open at his name, and he manages to tense against a nod. Instead, "Yes. To brown Arekoth." Thankfully, Madilla doesn't seem too concerned about mouth-breathing. Or the fact that in order to probe like this, she has to stand relatively close. Her nod is the only immediate response to his explanations, but a few seconds later her hands withdraw and she indicates, with a tilt of her head, one of the doors leading out of the infirmary and into the workroom. No doubt she assumes he'll follow, because she sets off in that direction and says, "We'll get you all supplied, then. It's easier, when a person knows what they need. Your hatching was the first one I ever watched. I remember it vividly." H'kon does follow, at a much easier distance than her prodding would have required, naturally. "I should recognise it," comes as simple affirmation. It takes longer, more consideration, and a slightly more distant look (not that he walks into any obstacles) before he allows, "My first as well." Still more time, and then a reflective, "I remember very little of it on the whole." Madilla's laugh is soft, and warmly amused. "I've heard a lot of riders say that. I suppose I'm not surprised. Intense emotional experiences can be difficult to hold on to." She glances back over her shoulder as she says that, her expression turned more thoughtful, but only in brief. Inside the workroom, she heads straight for a shelf of little bottles, hunting around until she finds the one she wants, which gets offered back to H'kon. "Something like this?" The contents are pungent: tea tree, and a mix of other scents. "No, not Arekoth," is almost a reflex, and comes with a hint more volume as a result. "Him, I remember," is softer, almost apologetic. "It's all the rest." He settles on his heels this time, while waiting for Madilla, not rightly daydreaming, but certainly off in whatever memories are left him. Rousing himself upon her return, H'kon leans in and inhales. Slowly. And for a bit longer than a normal sniff might require. And nods. "Quite similar. I'm sure it will suffice." "And the rest was not an intense emotional experience?" Madilla's smile is amused, though the approval around the corners of her eyes must surely be because he's found her offering acceptable. "I've never Stood, but I think I would find the experience intense, regardless of outcome. I don't imagine it would be possible to forget one's lifemate, like that." She leans back, resting upon the edge of the shelf, eyes falling back towards H'kon once more. "I don't remember much about childbirth, not clearly, but I do remember seeing my children for the first time." "I was searched late," H'kon offers, as if this should answer the emotional question. It surely does, for the brownrider. The knitting of his brow at the mention of her children is ephemeral at best. "I suppose there would be similarities." And he raises that jar up to give it another cautious sniff. "Yes, this will do." For the healer? Not so much. Still, she may be unenlightened, but she's not blind to the brownrider's signals - she nods. "Of course. Now, do you need anything else, or do you think this will do you? I know you said you were busy, and I wouldn't want to keep you." "I shouldn't think I will need more at this time." That jar he was sniffing had got visual attention too, and he looks up from the near-cross-eyed pose, looks the healer over a moment. "And if this should change, then I will come back, if I am unable to come by anything on my own." That last comes with that not-quite-natural attempt at a smile, though this one is certainly less pained than the brownrider has been known to manage. "I appreciate this." Heft. She returns his smile with something far brighter: genuine, warm, and yes, faintly amused. "Of course," she says, bobbing her head forward into a short, easy nod. "It's my job, after all. Anything you need." She draws herself away from the shelf, then, and amends (or is it adds?), "It's my pleasure. I'm glad I could help. I hope it feels better soon. This time of turn-- it's hard on bodies, I find." H'kon's look sharpens just a bit, head canting just a touch. "Indeed," is as much agreement as it his farewell. And with the transaction ended, it's off his heels and out. And Madilla? She just shakes her head, smiling. |
