Resident Common Room, High Reaches Weyr(#378RJs) Just off of the main passageway lies the small cavern that forms the hub of the residents' quarters, kept immaculately clean by the headwoman's staff and warmed in cold weather by a stone hearth to the left and well back from the entrance. Comfortable chairs and a plush fur arrayed before the hearth make an inviting spot to curl up with a book or handicraft, or just to sit and chat. Beyond, additional chairs stand in clusters throughout the room, some upholstered with age-softened hide, some plain wood. At the widest point of the cavern, a round table gleams with polish, though its surface is nicked and scarred from Turns of use. Beyond the table, the very back of the cavern often lies in shadow unless the glowbaskets there are unlidded to cast cozy pools of light. The commingled scents of klah, smoke and polish permeate the air along with the sweetness of rosemary and lavender.

Winter evening means that the hearth in the commons room is blazing, and naturally Edyis has already staked out one of the chairs after dinner, for working on her latest set of notes before the commons becomes too full or noisy to accomplish anything. The nearby stack of books varies in subject, and is propped carefully on a small table to avoid puddles caused by snow covered boots. "Stupid weather." She mutters with a tiny sneeze.

"It isn't that bad," Hana says cheerfully as she moves around one of the chairs to find her own spot. Close to the hearth, but with somewhat decent light, her hands are filled with a basket of needlework - and the stoppered top of a jug, rather like what is found at the tables for klah and the like.

Dark eyes lift from the notes, with a sniffle spotting the blonde, "I suppose it could be worse. This kind of weather drives everyone indoors though, makes it even harder to find a quiet spot to get work done." She studies the smiling woman carefully, as though memorizing her features. "I don't believe we have met before, Miss..."

Hana offers a fleeting smile, "That is winter in the Reaches - if you expect otherwise, I'm afraid you would have to seek far souther," she comments, words soft and amused. Taking a seat, it is the work of the moment to pull out the jug - and with it, a small cup, to be filled with fragrant tea. That set to suit her, the needlework is pulled out, a bit of embroidery, before she pauses and looks up, "Hm? Ah, Hana - at your service, m'dear."

The aspiring scribe laughs, "It isn't so much the weather as the lack of privacy it creates, but then that is weyr life for you I imagine. Hana, You are the Weyrwoman's assistant correct,? Weyrwoman Azaylia speaks very highly of you." The woman notes gaze shifting back to the pile of notes as she fishes out one of the tomes on herbs, comparing the sketches and making adjustments.

Hana hms, and nods. "One of many, certainly." There is a pause, before the somewhat older woman asks - again with that bit of a smile, "I didn't catch your name? Things have been so busy at late, I have rather fallen behind on some of my tasks." Unspoken being, making sure she knows faces, if not names.

"Edyis, formerly of Nabol - I stood for the last clutch and decided to stay on at the weyr." She states with a dimpled smile, "Mine is a forgettable face, unless you are often in the records room, I doubt we would have been introduced properly. Are you from reaches originally?"

Hana ahs, with a bit of a laugh, "It would seem chance was against us. When Lady Azaylia finds herself in the records, I do try to keep food and drink - of the careful sort - available, given the number of candlemarks she's spent in there, but it is not my place of choice, I shall admit. And yes, though it be Hold and not Weyr that I was born to."

Grinning the scribe gives the woman a glance over, "Let me guess, One of the major holds from your speech patterns, and judging from the way Weyrwoman Azaylia boasts, you are well trained. Hm. Ruthia perhaps? Or maybe High Reaches Hold proper?" As for the records room she laughs, "Master Jeroman is not the sort who makes for good company unless you happen to be a scroll. So I cannot blame you one bit"

"There is more than one proper Hold?" Hana asks, amusement wrapping around the words, before nodding, "High Reaches Hold - and I would like to think so. It wouldn't do for Lady Azaylia to be seen to be anyone less than well trained." There is a pause, then she adds, "And while my hand is passable, I am by no means holding to a neat hand while scribing. At least, not for anyone else's use, unless extra care is given."

Edyis laughs! "Generally us country bumpkins refer to the Lorded holds as proper, but I see your point." She tilts her head studying Hana more closely. "Is that something that you are interested in having the ability to do?" Curiosity tinging the words as her notebook is closed delicately.

Hana admits her preference with a lifted shoulder, then tilts her head, "Would you care for some tea? I have a second cup, if you'd like." There is a pause, as she considers the offer, then shakes her head. "It is well enough for correspondence and the like, so I should be well enough. I thank you for the offer though."

"Yes please, if it isn't too much trouble." The notebook is opened again, and notations are added again once more. "There is some knowledge I don't mind sharing. You seem like the type to actually put in the effort to learn, so it's no trouble to offer. Why did you leave the Hold? If it's not to personal to ask."

Hana hms quietly, as she digs out the second cup - wrapped against dust and the like. A quick unwrap, and then the still steaming liquid is poured in. Finally, as she hands over the cup, "At first, it was for my convenience; later, it was due to filling a need. My lady is rather... focused, when there is cause - and when that happens, there is a decided lack of personal care." In other words, and in the way of all lady's in waiting - Azaylia would be lost without her. Or so Hana would like to think.

Edyis smiles, "She does seem the sort to need assistance in that area, but it's also one of her charms, that she works so hard for the good of her Weyr." The cup is accepted gingerly, and a deep sigh escapes Edyis. "She is lucky, this tea smells positively wonderful."

Hana grins over the edge of her cup, the needlework mostly untouched due to talking and and refreshment, "It is one of my guilty pleasures, I have to admit. There is, it seems like, very little a good cup can't fix - or at least help put you in the frame of mind to fix."

The younger woman must agree for all she seems to be positively glowing with the cup held gingerly with both hands savoring her first sip. "I couldn't agree with you more, though I would add good wine to the list. You will have to teach me your trick in brewing sometime, this is lovely."

? "Klah is too abrupt in the morning, though I will have some if I have to; tea is much nicer, and goes with more foods." There is a pause, then she looks over, "But how are you doing here at the Weyr; may I presume to think you have found some comfort here?"

Edyis drains the cup, slowly. "I have, though it's a slow process. Work keeps my mind occupied, and I have more opportunity here than I ever would have at home." Once emptied the apron is used to dry out the cup. "What about you?"

"Hm.. the same work, different setting - and a different set of priorities. But after all this time, I think I can safely admit to feeling at home here; enough so, that I only look to the Hold for visits of dearest friends."

A knowing smile slips across her lips, "Strange how that can happen, I hope to become that comfortable someday here." She tilts her head slightly, moving to pass the empty cup back. "No one visits you here?"

Hana chuckles, and shakes her head, "It is rather more difficult to come than go - but when the chances arrive, there are visitors to be had." And always friends mentioned. There is a sigh, as she settles back in her chair, deliberately relaxing. "But that is the stuff of boring drift; I have interrupted your writing - and my own needlework. Would you like a refill before I set to?" she asks, putting aside her own cup but not yet picking up anything else.

"No thank you, but thank you for the charming conversation and tea. I hope we meet again sometime soon. It was an honest pleasure Miss Hana." The scribe tones with the biggest dimpled smile she can manage gathering her books together.
