| "He got a point there," notes S'fox, gesturing with his fork at Aeriste. "S'all I'm saying." But he shrugs, with a tiny shake of his head at Aeriste and Jendel. The sort that says there's no dealing with some women. But he does continue eating for a moment, before he shoots a glance at Jendel again. "So I think I've seen you around a few times, don't rightly know you, though. I'm S'fox," he introduces himself. Beating rugs, Nerine glanced to the stack she had finished tossing the rod down on top of it. "I wonder what they do when there are no candidates around." She says to no one before finally making her way down to the Living cavern. As she enters her bright silver blue eyes fix on familiar faces and new ones with glee. She snaps up her plate quickly before joining the group near the newest face. Listening she raises a brow at the word 'scandalous' tossing a glance down to her own soft brown breeches."I don't know, do you folks think I dress scandalously?" she asks with a quirk of her mouth. "skirts are plain dangerous if you ask me... bundle up about the legs worse than a noose." She glances at the girl speaking Noting the white knot she grins brightly. "Congrats on being searched! I am Nerine." She offers her free hand politely before giving a polite nod to all. Aeriste blanches just a little at Jendel. "You just keep those cleavers away. I don't care how tender my flesh is, you're not cutting me up." And to Berit, he muses, "I'm not sure that the kind of dragonriding that they allow us to do's the kind of dragonriding that they need pants for-" And, since that sounds somewhat questionable, he adds quickly, "Drills and fighting and such. All those moves in the air. Maybe you could design some decent garment? I'm sure a weaver could, if anyone could... Ah. I think that if you were in a position to re-evaluate wearing pants, you might be a different kind of Berit anyway. I don't know how you'd feel then. I don't want to speak for how you would, either. There's got to be some kind of compromise, right?" And he looks up at Nerine when she speaks. "I'm not supposed to be looking at women's legs. Or anyone's legs. Am I?" Aeriste is given a rather amused snort from Jendel, the butchers eyes practically agleam with mirth. "Dun flatter yerself, lad, like an'one wud wanna eat ya!" A bark of laughter, before she continues with eating her meatroll. Then, with a glance towards S'fox, she gives the bronzerider a smirk. "Aye, I dun thin' I've met ye, S'fox." She gives the rider an affirmative shake of her head, before introducing herself, "Jendel's th'name, 'm a butch'r." She holds her hand towards him, offering it for a handshake, "Nice t'meetcha." Paige still has a few spots peppered over her face as a result of her plant allergy, but seems otherwise no worse for wear as she wearily enters from the bowl, veering toward the serving tables. Piling a plate up with a few things here and a few things there, she gives Nerine and the other familiar faces a cheery enough smile in greeting, settling at a table within earshot and digging in with gusto. "I ..hm." Berit stares into the contents of her mug, the lukewarm klah untouched for the most part. "I think.. I would like a nap. Yes." She stands up, brushing off her skirt, and makes her goodbye. "It was nice to see you again, S'fox, sir, and it was nice to meet you, Aeriste." Introductions to the other two women will have to wait for another day. Careful to keep her gaze averted, she wiggles the fingers of her free hand in a wave and grabs her mug with the other. And off she goes, away from the table to deposit her mug and then to find her way back to the barracks. Berit heads out of the cavernous entrance to the bowl. Berit has left. "Wouldn't catch me dead in one," S'fox says of skirts, straight-faced for all of three seconds before his mouth breaks into a wide grin. He lifts a hand to wave at Berit as she goes, calling after her, "Have a nice nap." Then, he's settling back again to finish his meal, glancing at the remaining young people. "So, Jendel, yeah?" he repeats her name, with a tilt at his head. "You're the one I saw the other day in the galleries for a minute, right? All bloody? I got the right girl, right?" Nerine scrunches her nose slightly at Aeriste's comment uncertainty written plainly across her features. Jendel's statement however melts the expression into mirth. She nods as the new candidate leaves, and bursts into a bright peal of laughter as S'fox gives his opinion of skirts. She glances at the rider. "My sentiments exactly," As Paige arrives Nerine waves for her to come and join in in the newly vacated seat. "Come on I promise I don't bite!" she laughs. Aeriste just hmphs, and pours himself another mug of klah. "Fardling right nobody wants to," he informs Jendel firmly. "No meat on my bones at ALL. To S'fox, he adds, "She's *really* good with a cleaver, I'm told." To Paige, he offers a pleasant nod. Surrounded by cheerful people, he begins to cheer right back up, too, and though he's mostly quiet right at that moment he listens with interest to everyone. Jendel snorts at Aeriste, before turning back to the rider. "Aye, that'd b'me," Jendel confirms S'fox's hunch, giving a snort at the word "girl." The butcher, however, chuckles and says, "'m us'ly a bloody mess from m'work, b'not t'day - I've th'noon off!" She seems rather happy that she, at least, has the afternoon off - it's always nice to have a break from work, isn't it? Paige slides over a few seats to sit closer to Nerine in between bites of rolls, returning Aeriste's nod after washing down what promises to be a routine, late night snack. She can't help but to peer cautiously at Jendel between hearing about cleavers and bloody messes; they're practically total opposites in both appearance and livelihood. "I dun have the stomach for doin' all that, " she mutters, shaking her head a little, but she adds an amiable, "I'm Paige, by the by, " nevertheless. "Not the biting I'd worry about," S'fox confesses to Nerine. "Just the way everybody seems to be waving around knives these days." His meal has disappeared in short order; now he pushes the plate away and looks at Jendel. "You like it? Butchering? In the market for a change of pace, maybe?" Since she seems so excited about the day off. "Hey, Paige," he adds to that girl. Nerine laughs "I admit I didn't recognize you because of it." She adds to Jendel with a grin." She slides to make room for Paige, "Well it is good to see we haven't scared you back to the hold!" she smiles sipping her mug of Klah. She curves a brow at the statement about knives eyes flitting between Jendel and the others. Rather than asking that question she comments to Paige "My your face healed up rather well, what was it you had a reaction too any way?" there is a warm smile offered. Aeriste looks over at Paige again, too, a little more closely. "That's right, the allergy rash, right? Was the cause ever discovered?" "Love't," Jendel says with a grin - perhaps not what S'fox was hoping to hear. "'ve alw's b'n an odd l'il pers'n - fer some reas'n, I like th'aromas there th'nob'dy else likes. I like t'get me hands dirty," she smiles, and then gives the rider an odd look. "Why'd'ya ask? What sort'f "change of pace -" and here she tries to imitate his voice as best as possible, " - are y'talkin 'bout?" "Some herb down in the garden, " answers Paige to both parties after a moment. "I think, anyway. Went down there t'help someone and bam! started gettin' the rash." And as for being scared back to the hold - well, the time will come soon enough for that. "Naw, not yet, but m'folks want me t'be a'gettin' back soon. They dun want me t'stick 'round here fer too long." It'd be just awful if she picked up Weyr habits, after all. It takes her a few minutes to remember S'fox's name, but she finally manages a polite, "Hullo, S'fox." Jendel's imitation of his voice makes S'fox raise his brows, then quirk a crooked grin at her. "Aw, no reason," he remarks, deliberately casual as he answers her question. "Just wondering something, or, well, more Inorath than me. Was /going/ to ask if you wanna try being a candidate for a while, but if you're not interested..." The bronzerider shrugs, tilting his head slightly as he tries to bite back his grin at the butcher. As cool and in control as the butcher usually is, even Jendel seems rather surprised at what S'fox says now, for she gives the dragonrider a rather wild look. She blinks a couple of times, before finally seeming to regain her composure again. Now it's her turn to smirk back at the dragonrider. "Well..." and here, she seems to be at a loss for words again, before finally she chuckles, "Odd, I've nev'r b'n ask'd b'fore." Really, she's never even /thought/ of the possibility! Finally, with a shrug, she gives in, "Awright, fine, I s'pose I c'd be a Candidate." Wink. "Weyrs," Aeriste says to Paige quietly, "Aren't so bad." Evidently, something's gotten to him; he might still have reservations, but he's visibly backed off from his sometimes judgmental attitude of the other day. "No reason why they should be in a rush to yank you back-" His attension snaps back to Jendel and S'fox, though, and then he lets out a whoop of glee. Perhaps, then, the fear was mostly an act? "Congratulations!" "I'm startin' to think they're alright, " Paige allows at last, "but I think they're just worried I'll show back up and be as radical as m'aunt-the-bluerider." There's a reason the sisters haven't spoken in turns. "I hafta say, though, y'all're real nice folk and s'not so bad here, even if'n I can't find no sparklin' chambers or shiny roads like what's in them stories I heard as a child." Between lofty tales and her brother's well-spun stories stuffed into his few letters back home, it's quite likely she built up an idealized image of what a Weyr should be like - and is seeing, with this visit, that it's not quite what she's imagined it to be. And then S'fox is offering candidacy to Jendel, causing the holdbred girl's eyes to round. "Tha's ... real nice. Congrats." S'fox does grin at that, chipped teeth and all. "Well, don't let me bully you into it or nothing," he drawls to Jendel. "I guess you know where the barracks are and all, the stuff about moving in and... all? Being from here?" He glances to her, lifts a brow questioningly. "I have a little more before I have to get going--supposed to be meeting somebody in a bit." Nerine absorbs Paige and Aeriste's conversation. "It is true, we aren't what most folk expect, but the weyr has a charm all its own." She glances to Jendel with a grin. "Well now, Congratulations Jendel!" she smiles brightly "Dun worry, yer not," Jendel says with a chuckle, nodding brightly in gratitude to the others congratulating her. She looks back at S'fox and nods, "Aye, I'll b'fine. I shud b'able t'find me way there 'n ev'rything b'now." She drawls back with a grin. "We can help her find the way," Aeriste states cheerfully. "If she needs directions." And he turns to peer at Paige. "What does your aunt-the-bluerider do that's so radical?" "Oh, good point." One that hadn't occurred to S'fox, apparently. "Guess I'll leave her in your change, then, and go be a few minutes early to meet up with J'vair. But, congrats, Jendel. Hope you enjoy it." He's already standing up, preparing to go. "And I'll see all of you later." "Aw, not much, " Paige replies casually. "She's jus' a dragonrider who has a female greenrider fer a weyrmate and has taken - real well to a more open lifestyle than what's tolerable at home. Although, " she muses, "m'brother Impressed at High Reaches and they don't call him no radical." Then again, he never returned home to pull away one of his younger sisters to a Weyr for a sevenday, either. "But person'lly, I jus' think they're disappointed she never stayed in the mountains and got hitched." As S'fox stands, she gives him a tentative wave. "Right, later." Nerine shakes her head as page answers. "Is that all? " she sucks in a breath. "What about you though Paige? What do you think of Weyr life, not your parent's opinions but your own?" She nods to S'fox and Jendel noting she will also do her part to assist the new candidate. Jendel gives the bronzerider a small chuckle, and replies, "I 'ope so, too." The now former butcher gives S'fox a wave goodbye as he prepares to go, and she stretches in her seat - perhaps thinking about getting up and performing her move into the barrack "Well." S'fox scratches his neck at Paige's words, frowning at her. "Families, holders ones -- they're like that sometimes, I guess. I mean, my family's holders, originally, though we don't live there now. But, well." He shrugs and shuts up, repeating, "I'll see you around." And with that and a wave, he turns and walks on out. S'fox goes home. S'fox has left. Jendel shrugs at Aeriste's question. "Y'know, I dunno!" The butcher admits without any hint of shame. She finally finishes the meatroll with one last big bite, and then looks at her fellow Candidate. "S'pose we'll see, huh?" Nerine chuckles "I doubt it, but it is something to see about, What I wouldn't give to be tossed back into the records room," Paige's meatrolls lie abandoned in favor of providing Nerine with an answer - which takes a few moments to make it out, even. "I - I dun think I've actually seen enough of it t'say, " she admits. "Only been here near a sevenday and tha's hardly enough time t'see what it's like livin' here day in and out. But I dun think it's as bad as folks sometimes make it out t'be, " she adds quickly, "not at all. M'aunt's not a bad sort and yer real decent folk, so it's gotta be 'bout as good or bad as livin' most anywhere else, jus' different. Right?" Aeriste blinkblinks back at Jendel. "I suppose so. Did you need help moving your things? You live here, so I'm sure you've got more to shuffle over than I did, at least." He nods at Paige's question, too. "Maybe so." "I dun /need/ th'elp, th'if y'wanna 'elp, more power t'ye," Jendel replies to Aeriste, finally standing up from her seat. "I shud prob'ly git to it, then." And with that, she nods to the other two, gesturing them to follow her if they wish to help her with moving into the barracks. Aeriste rises, too, and follows along after her. Jendel walks down the eastern stairs to the Inner Caverns. Jendel has left. Aeriste walks down the eastern stairs to the Inner Caverns. Aeriste has left. Nerine stands as well. "Well I hope you will stay with us a bit longer, I think you will find that It grows on you, Weyrlife that is. I was born and raised here in Fort and I can imagine no other place to call home." a soft smile is afforded the girl. "It is a very diffrent kind of life, but it is just as good." "I dunno, " Paige says doubtfully, "but I'll think on it some. Least I can do is have m'aunt write home and ask t'keep me here fer a bit longer. I know I'd hafta start a'workin' in earnest, but I dun mind workin'. S'what I've done all m'life at home in some way or another." Still working at finishing off her plate, she returns the other girl's smile with an affable one of her own. "Yeah, definitely different, but don't seem so bad, like I said. If'n yer turnin' in, I guess I'll be a'seein' ya 'round later. Tomorrow." Nerine grins "I think you'll find you like it here. See you in the morrow." Nerine leaves. |
