It was quite likely foolish. Certainly not the best idea. Autumn is nearly through and Winter will set in soon enough that there's a bit in the air even /if/ it's one of the few warmish days they've been able to enjoy on the Island. None of these facts have stopped Emme from deciding that she's still going to go for a nice relaxing swim. Thus, looking over her shoulder at Riorde, the young harper offers a challenging grin. "We're going to freeze when we get out. But, last one in's a rotten fish!" she calls, before breaking into a run for the water. Clothes and all, yep.

And it could well be their last warm day of the season. The point is made all the more poignant with the recent disappearance of the two girls in the storm, and Riorde is determined to enjoy herself. At the challenge the girl bares her teeth in a grin that is almost feral and takes off after Em"Get used to it," Riorde calls back, smug with her perceived victory, as short-lived as it is. She inhales sharply through her teeth as she hits the water at a run, bare feet sending up a spray that soaks her through before she's even knee-deep. Only experience and the knowledge to use her toes to grip keeps her from slipping and falling straight in. "Oh no you don't!" She plays dirty, reaching out in an attempt to snag the other girl's arm and pull her back, trip her up, so she can splash through the reeds and into the river first.

They could all use a lift of spirit after the way those two girls were swept away in the storm. And like Ri, Emmeline is determined to live a little, and have a bit of fun while there's still the opportunity. "Oh yes I doooooooo!" she retorts, calling the words out in a taunting and singsong voice. "Oh, oh! -Cheater!-" she shrieks, having her arm grabbed and pulled so she stumbles behind. Nevermind that she started running withut warning. So of course in yet another possibly terminally stupid move, she flings herself out at the water in an effort to at least get there at the same time; thus, robbing them both of actual victory. But hey.

Hitting the cold, cold water makes Emme gasp alright. Only the turns of experience keeping her from inhaling water along with equally chilly air. "Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!" No, that isn't a battle-cry. It's more a shriek for mercy. Not that the sea has any. "Get used to it!? Hnph!" The snooty tone degenerates pretty quickly, obviously. Hard to keep that one up amidst a chatter of teeth. "We're going to be quite a sigh when we make a run for the bonfire to warm up."

Riorde determinedly refuses to let loose a shriek, however much she might like. She flounders the rest of the way in, forcing herself to endure the cold even though it means bouncing up and down on the balls of her feet. "I told Eirdan to bring blankets for later - if he forgets I'll kill him!" Riorde threatens to kill her brother just about every day.

Emmeline obviously holds herself under no such constraints. And thus, she is thw total wuss of the two girls. "If you had your way, your brother woulda been dead a hundred times over by now." she jokes, offering a bit of a smile. "Maybe we should make a LIST. You know, the kind that scares people." While the harper might be kidding, it's entirely possible that Riorde will take the idea seriously.

"I keep granting him stays," Riorde admits through gritted teeth, trying not to give into the chattering in hope that she'll acclimate sooner rather than later. She slowly starts to make her way away from the edge of the pool, keeping her head above water though the rest of her is submerged. "Occasionally he does useful things. Like bring blankets. A list?" The way Emmeline pronounces the word intrigues her.

Swimming a bit more towards the center of the river's pool, Emme clenches her jaw to prevent more chattering. Moving around will warm up the muscles, right? Right. "A list." she confirms. Her voice, though a bit higher pitched then usual, attempts to sound conspiratorial. "See, if people really piss us off or upset us? They go on the LIST. And people on the LIST start finding things like dead fish under their pillows. Or maybe a punch in the face." The violence is added to appeal to Ri's less delicate sensibilities obviously. The harper prefers more subtlety these days. Being otherwise hasn't turned out very successful for her.

Riorde treads water, hands sculling in small circles that disturb the surface of the water. "My brother deserves a fish," she reflects, not altogether serious. "I punch him often enough as it is." Treading isn't warming her fast enough, so she starts paddling around the pool too, head kept up. She did have the foresight to pile her hair on the top of her head; cold, wet hair is the worst. "I don't know," Riorde says slowly, although the idea initially appeals. "I don't know if people would really find the...humour in it right now. We could keep it for later, though?"

Emmeline is apparently waiting until they leave the water to pull her hair back into a bun and keep it off her neck. So as it is? Wet ends that are surely going to make her regretful soon. "You make a very valid point." she admits. "Boy do I ever need something non-morbid to think about. I'm pretty sure that picking through music for the memorial fucked with my head a little." Not typically quite that blunt, the words are softened with a small grin. "I'd say we need something fun to do - for everyone. But there's just no way I can wrap myself around that right now. Any ideas?"

"That would fuck with your head." Riorde doesn't shy away now that it's brought up. "Probably fucked with everyone's heads in one way or another." The events, not the music; she doesn't blame Emmeline for doing her duty. "Fun. Fun." She repeats the word at a mutter, not coming up with anything else immediately. "It'll be winter soon."

"I tried to pick something that felt sincere. I mean... yeah." Emmeline lets the words linger off, since neither of the two women have any great love for Kima's surviving big brother. "Scary all around. And there were the group of people out fishing that got caught out too. I think we were lucky that there were only two who didn't make it." But no, wait. They are supposed to be having some fun. Or something like that. "Yes, and we'll likely be cooped up in the caves a lot. Maybe a last trek around the outer islands for those interested. A few days where the weather wll be clear. Maybe."

"My father was fishing." Riorde sounds faraway, imagining possibilities unrealised. She's slow to say more, but the words pulled out of her one after another. "I liked Kima. We used to be closer." She starts on a second circuit of the pool, swimming in a sluggish circle. "The islands sounds like a good idea," she says at length. "If we can be sure there won't be any more storms. It wouldn't be approved otherwise. Everyone's too skittish."

Emmeline is content to tread water, turning in a circle to follow Riorde's movements around the pool. Now that they've acclimated, being in the water isn't quite so bad, see. "I didn't know her very well. But if you want to talk, you know I'll listen." she offers, obviously sincere. "Oh, there will be more storms. Shimana assures me of that. But she seems to know when there'll be breaks. It's going to be a rough season. So just.. be careful when you go out fishing, alright? I'd go nuts worrying about /two/ of my closest friends stuck out there. And then I would be forced to hound you mercilessly when you returned. That's just bad all around." Anything to lighten the mood a little, she flicks some water over that way.

Halfway around the pool, skirting the edge but deep enough that her feet don't teach, Riorde speaks again, sounding defeated. "What would I say?" She manages a bit of a smile for the offer, though. "Aye, I will. My da wants me to stick close when I go out with them, at least for now." It grates a bit, but Riorde has yet to sound rebellious. She cuts the circuit short before completing it, swimming towards the centre to join Emmeline. The smile she offers is a little fuller. "I'll be careful," she promises, shaking her head and blinking against the water, then flicking a little back. "I'll dunk you if you're not careful," she warns, willing to be distracted.

"But it must be nice having your father be so concerned. I would think?" Emmeline just frowns a little at the thought, but shakes her head instead of elaborating. "You'd say whatever you felt like saying, of course. You've let me babble on at you before." she reminds, though it's with a pained sort of smile while she recalls the reasons why she's had to vent. "Oh you will, will you?" Her eyes narrow, and with what must pass for her one and only aggressive expression... she sets her hand on the water in just the right position and then... *splash*! Promptly, of course, cackling and then swimming away.

"Yeah, he's alright," Riorde allows with the same rough, dismissive fondness she shows towards her brother too. "I don't think I babble." She says it with a bit of an apology. And then Emmeline has to go and splash her. Since it's just them, Riorde lets out a shriek, half-expecting the volley of water after her threat but letting herself act surprised nevertheless. "Oh, you're going to /get/ it!" she calls after Emmeline and sets to with firm swimming strokes, no longer worrying about her hair.

"I didn't say -you- babble, I said -I've- babbled!" Emmeline corrects, being the pedantic sort that she is, such words cannot go uncorrected. But the words are hastily tossed over her shoulder when Riorde starts chasing after her. "Ahaahaha. You have to catch me first!" she taunts, obviously picking up the pace a bit more to flee. Thus will be the rest of their little watery adventure. Chase. Dunk. Splash. And then shiver a /whole lot/ until they park themselves near the fire.
