Dear Mama,

I'm terribly sorry I haven't been writing as much as I said I would. There's a lot of hard work to be done at the Weyr, and everyday I'm seeing something new. In fact, I went to the Gather, and K'del even let me and Emmeline walk with him. Oh, K'del is the Weyrleader. I've talked to him! And he let me touch his dragon, Cadejoth. And Emmeline is an exile, but now she's a Weyrling. That's what they call new riders. Maybe you've heard of them by now? I don't know how long it takes for gossip to reach home. The Islanders. They're really not so bad, and half of the dragonets chose them!

Oh, that's right! I went to a Hatching!!! And there was even a GOLD. They were so cute, just like any newborn calf or foal. But they hatched from eggs, instead of coming from where babies usually come from.

Tell Papa that I've been staying out of trouble, because I honestly have. It's been nice getting to know the animals, especially since it's warm now. High Reaches gets really, really, really cold! But the Weyr provides nice sweaters, though they are kind of itchy. I mind my manners and thank the Headwomen a lot, so don't worry.

Oh, I almost forgot! We even met Lord Aughan at the Gather, and his fiance Issedi. She was so lovely. That reminds me, my dress is getting too short. I'll do what I can with it, but you always make the best dresses, Mama. I'd love another one, blue and gold. But if you can't, I understand.

That's all I can think of now. I know you two are worried about me staying in a Weyr, but it's not as bad as everyone thinks. Honest. But with all the Exiles, the excitement of the Hatching, I'm sure there'll be tall tales and crazy rumors spreading out all over Pern. So don't believe everything you hear.

Azaylia sighs, leaning away from the hide and peering around the Craft Complex. Despite the days past, everyone was still abuzz about the exile girl's murder. Swallowing softly, she leans forward to finish.

Have you had the baby yet? Do I have a baby brother or baby sister? What's their name? Please write me back and tell me everything that's been going on back home.

I miss you all so much,

Azaylia
