It was luck or maybe just good timing that Mal had finally stopped dragging his feet about getting his transfer pushed through. It'd given time for Z'ian to help move his brother's family and get them settled in at their parent's before their father finally took a turn for the worse. It'd been going on since the late fall and now was just the final culmination of months of slow dying. Of course, Alek was nowhere to be found and the bronzerider didn't have the time to properly track him down.

He'd passed with only two of his three sons there. Their mother cried and the grandchildren had cried with her. Z'ian didn't. Neither did his brother or his wife. And when it was all over, they'd taken care of his body at the back property of the cothold together. She hadn't wanted Tsanth to drop him off in the cold of between; she still wanted to visit him every day. So they'd respected those wishes.

At the end of the afternoon, towards evening, he'd sat on the lower steps of the back porch and looked across at the llama pens. He could still spot the smoke drifting up from the smoldering pile. The sound of footsteps thudded across the wood and he'd know the lighter steps from Mal's heavier ones any day. The scent of whiskey and brine seemed to hang on him permanently now, but he would know the presence of Alek near him before he recognized most others. He settled next to him and dug into his worn, tar stained jacket that seemed to be endlessly patched and handed the flask over. "Miss 'em?"

"No. You?"

"Fuck no."

Delicious mini-muffins of Z'ian. That's what these are. I demand MOAR. But... I like the reality that not everyone who dies is beloved. It's interesting to see Z'ian's reaction to something like this... and I like the fact that, in the end, Alek was there.

There's not many words needed between brothers. ;D Loved this!
