In the wake of Milani's bringing down the swift hammer of justice, even teenagers on latrine duty talk, and there's no corking the latest rumor to gradually make its way around the Weyr. Those letters the candidates unearthed weren't entirely marriage plans and tithe news. Turns out Inviere's got some connection to a few Holds in the area, and based on her correspondence, the word from those Holds isn't good. Details may vary depending on whom one asks, but the gist seems to be this:

Ezalea's departure from the Reaches a few months ago had something to do with the profits from the meteors the Weyr cleaned up. No one's sure why, exactly -- all anyone seems to know is that the local Holds were settled by news the goldrider brought them on a visit home, and maybe, just maybe, Tiriana might be doing something with money they're owed. But that can't be right, can it? Tiriana's incorrigible... but outright theft seems a bit much, particularly when the Weyr has been working so hard to prove its continued usefulness into the Interval. It all seems rather strange.

Whatever it is that's actually going on, though, the net result is that though Holdbred candidates are only a small percentage of the candidate class, a few of them have begun to receive increasingly demanding letters from their families. (Glad of the excuse to get their offspring away from those moral-deficient Weyrfolk, perhaps?) Between convict candidates and potentially shady business deals, not every Holder is happy with the idea of their kids being led by a seedy Weyrwoman and a still-teenaged Weyrleader. Tradition holds that the Weyr has the right to Search. But with some parents advising their children to reconsider their candidacy, the question now is: will any of them actually /do/ it?
