| Lake Shore, High Reaches Weyr The rest of the bowl may be barren, grass barely surviving at best, but here by the lake, it's brilliantly green in the warmer months: thickening and thriving in the silty, boulder-dotted soil just before it transitions to soft sand and thence to the cool, clear water itself. A large freshwater lake fed by a low waterfall, it not only provides warm-weather bathing space for humans and dragons, but has one end fenced off as a watering hole for the livestock in the feeding grounds. The water there is often muddier than the rest of the clear lake, whose shallows drop off abruptly several yards out into deep water, and whose edge undulates against the coarse-hewn bowl wall: here close enough to just be bramble-covered rocks, there far enough away that a narrow land bridge divides the main lake from a smallish pond. Between are several rocky outcroppings that form excellent makeshift diving points, though only one -- across the bridge -- has a set of narrow, slippery, quite possibly tempting stairs.
If G'laer is surprised, as usual, there's no sign of it as he departs the class and gets the green settled in her straps. It's not so much of a hassle as the first time, but he takes longer than the average weyrling checking that he hasn't twisted, tangled, or otherwise botched up the job. They're tested with tugs and jerks before he lifts his weight up into them with a helpful (read: awkward) boost from Teisyth. Then there's the matter of strapping himself in which he accomplishes while the green is plodding toward the lake. Tela's jogged thataway, but not mounted up; there's the strap inspection to go through, after all, usual when activity's being amped up a notch or, in this case, several. "Don't know if you heard," she says cheerfully while she's at it, "but a friend from my clutch fell off and broke her arm, her first time. Not that I expect you to top her!" Meara would have been so much better at reassurances, if such are needed at all; Solith picks up some slack, noting to previously-nervous Teisyth, « You'll be fine! It'll be the same, only different-- better! » They'll have much better luck than Telavi did. "So it's just like her early flights alone, only you stay aboard: run, jump, glide, land. If something crazy happens, best she go over the water. Questions?" It's all quick, and pretty confident, like she expects them to be fine. A single brow arches at Telavi's words about her friend, "I see you took my words about there not being enough fear in weyrlinghood to heart." The tone is grim, but there's the tiniest little edge that might mean he's making a joke. It is Teisyth who titters nervously. She just doesn't want to let G'laer down, an' there's so many things that she could forget to do if she's not careful, and-- ! Solith's reassurances help, some, but the tension of G'laer's grip around the straps betray that he's affected by his dragon's concerns. "Stay aboard. Right." He acknowledges neutrally. "No questions." Then at Telavi's signal, Teisyth shifts into action, and G'laer grips all the tighter. But there's nothing so exciting as Sabella's first flight, no broken limbs, barely even a wobbly wing once the boxy green gets going. And just like that it's over. Lift off, glide, land. Both are still in one piece, Teisyth elated and G'laer-- well, G'laer. "This is just the beginning." And it is, in another way; when the two weyrlings land, Telavi applauds, and doesn't even look around surreptitiously for Quinlys before asking, "Do you want to go again? Or if you don't want to press your luck--" at going up and down safely, or at sticking to the very basic sort of flight, either/or. If they're up for it, there's more sky to cover... or, well, there's always back to class. Though G'laer is likely tempted by the back to class option, because, surely everything they're being taught is of sufficient quality and value to warrant his time and attention, right? But Teisyth's enthusiasm for the flight, wins him over for another go at it. « Oh, an' I didn't drop you or squash you or do nothin' wrong! » And isn't that exciting? |
