Infirmary, High Reaches Weyr

Two sets of double doors, one from the the inner caverns and a recently built set from the dragon infirmary, lead into the unnaturally hushed human infirmary. Despite fastidious cleaning, the scent of redwort and numbweed has long since soaked into every smooth-carved surface, along with other, subtler medicinal smells. Pristinely made cots are lined up against the walls; most of them are left open to view, but some in the back are surrounded by curtains for delicate procedures or critical patients.

About halfway between the two entrances is the counter for the healers on duty; it guards the entrance to the storage rooms just beyond, their shelves and cabinets lined with meticulously labeled bottles, boxes, jars, and even vats of supplies. The Weyrhealer's office is also here, along with another side room for mixing up medicines and the like.

By rights, Madilla should probably be in the infirmary as a patient rather than as a healer, this miserably cold winter's afternoon, because she's very obviously full-term, now, and looking rather the worse for wear of it. But she's here, nonetheless, hanging out at the intake desk on the stool that's been in position for her use these past few weeks. For once, her hands are empty: no quilting, no reports, no papers of any kind, and she looks bored for the lack, staring rather dreamily off into space while, for the moment, there are no patients to deal with.

Wearing a cozy sweater, Milani comes in with cheeks that are pink not from cold, but excitement. Spotting Madilla at the counter, she hurries over with an animated look to her. "Madilla! I need you to check me out," she cuts right to the chase then eyeballs the healer's abdomen. "If it's not too uncomfortable that is." She leans in a little, reaching for Madilla's hand. "I've missed two periods and the third is laaate!"

Madilla visibly jumps in surprise at Milani's approach, but it takes only a moment for that surprise to turn spectacularly into excitement. "Oh, Milani, how exciting!" is her delighted response, her hand curving over the Headwoman's, aiming for a squeeze. Any suggestion of uncomfortableness is waved away in the way she uses her other hand to try and propel herself from her stool. "I don't think I /can/ be made more uncomfortable, and I know I'd appreciate having something to do about now. If you don't mind how awkwardly slow I am." She has to take her hand back, though, needing both to actually get herself onto her feet.

"Here, lean on me," Milani offers, one arm shifting, aiming to curl around Madilla's waist inasmuch as she can. "And I know, it can get so frustrating the waiting at the end. I'm excited now but when I'm big as a house, I'll probably be in the same boat," the headwoman says laughingly.

Madilla accepts the assistance gratefully, using Milani's assistance to get herself to the nearest examination cubicle. As they walk, she agrees, "I don't think any amount of nervousness could make me want to put it off any further, at this point. I was due this seven, but so far? Nothing." She seems cheerful enough, though, smiling brightly across at the Headwoman. "But tell me... how are you feeling?"

Arm secure around the healer, Milani walks over to that cubicle and gives Madilla an encouraging little squeeze. "Hopefully soon," she replies with a wry little look. "Once it kicked off for me it was ... well it went so fast!" Breath out. "Mostly fine, though I did notice a little bit of tummy upset last week and the girls are getting sore."

"I remember," says Madilla, with an expression of somewhat fond recollection. "I only hope it will go as well for me. /Soon/." She closes the curtain of the cubicle behind them, taking a moment to steady herself on the edge of the cot before she turns towards the cabinets to make preparations. "Tired? I seem to remember that was a big thing for you, last time." She glances back at the Headwoman, smiling. "Anyway, get yourself undressed, and I'll go ahead and take a look."

Another slight little squeeze and then Milani perches on the cot, bends to slip off her hoes first. "Not so much with the tired this time," she claims. "If it's really what I'm hoping for anyway. Though I've been needing a bit more sleep at night." She beams up at Madilla and goes about getting undressed with no fuss, slips on the examination gown and then lies back, hands behind her head looking up at the ceiling. La la la. Gynie exams. So much fun. /Not/.

As Milani undresses, Madilla washes her hands, bustling about with as much enthusiasm as she can imagine-- she's pretty slow, which is unsurprising, all things considered. "Every pregnancy is different," she says, with a light laugh. The positioning is a little awkward; Madilla's belly is a pretty distinct hurdle to overcome, but /finally/ she's ready to proceed, warning, quietly, "This'll be a little cold. Have you mentioned your suspicions to anyone, yet?"

"I suppose you don't really /get/ that though until you go through it more than once," Milani says thoughtfully and tucks her chin toward her chest. "I know, silly ... exam tools," she adds laughingly and takes a breath, slowly lets it out and hums to distract herself. "Not yet. I want to be sure before I break the news. "

"Probably not," agrees Madilla. "Like most things, I think. It's hard to /really/ understand it until you've done it." She clearly is doing her best to keep the exam short and sweet, but no doubt that doesn't make it any less unenjoyable. Finally, though, she draws back, positively beaming. That's probably answer enough, but she confirms, delightedly, "No doubt about it: you've news to share, tonight."

"True," Milani says, wincing just a little as cold metal is moved again and then she pushes up on her elbows, face wreathed in a big smile. "Yes! That's wonderful! Oh Madilla, thanks!" As soon as she's able, the headwoman sits up and still begowned, reaches over to hug the healer tight. "And that means that our kids won't be that far apart in age too!"

If Madilla is amused by that hug, coming, as it is, from someone so near entirely unclothed, well, it's entirely superceded by her own pure delight. Her arms reach to wrap around the headwoman in turn; squeezing, she agrees, "That's true! Probably-- between seven or eight months, I think. Unless mine has decided to wait for yours. Congratulations, Milani. I'm so glad it finally happened for you."

One very pregnant woman! One much less pregnant woman! Hugging! With the half-naked! "It's a big difference when they're babies, not so much when they're kids," Milani declares cheerily. "Here's hoping that next time it doesn't take quite so long. I'll bet Kas is going to be /really/ happy."

It's bound to be /someone's/ fantasy, somewhere. Drawing back, eventually, Madilla sinks herself into the nearest chair with a low sigh of relief, but nods merrily nonetheless. "I can see that. With babies, it seems like even the smallest amount of time can make a difference. They grow up so fast. Like Milandra." Her fingertips idly begin rubbing at her belly, almost as though she's doing it without thinking. "Trust you to be thinking about next time /already/. Out to repopulate the entire weyr, are we? I'm sure he will be," she adds, then, of K'del. "I know it's something he's wanted."

"They really do," Milani agrees about babies then laughs, shakes her head. "I think if there's another, probably be my last," the headwoman adds thoughtfully, then gives Madilla another hug. "I'm going to get changed and go talk to him in fact. I'll start coming by for the usual checkups?"

That makes Madilla laugh, cheerfully. "Three is a good number," she tells the Headwoman. "But so is two. As long as they're healthy." A quick bob of the head follows, as she draws herself back towards her feet. "Right-- same drill as last time. Look after yourself. Make the Weyrleader spoil you, mm?" The last bit is teasing. "I'll leave you to get changed. But-- congratulations, again. I mean it."

Laughing some more, Milani nods. "You know, somehow I don't think I'll even need to ask about spoiling," the headwoman confesses and steps away to start getting dressed again. "Thanks Madilla and you too, with hopefully more to come very very soon."

"Good," is Madilla's conclusion on the spoiling; she sounds approving. And; "Thank you. We'll-- see." And then, carefully, she slides around the curtain to leave the headwoman to her dressing, while she heads - slowly and carefully - back to the admissions desk. Back to waiting.

A few minutes later, dressed again, Milani passes by with a fond touch to Madilla's shoulder. Later on, in the weyrleader's weyr, the headwoman'll have something skimpy on to draw his attention to the painted announcement on her belly: two dots for eyes, a curved line for a smiley face, an arrow pointing vaguely toward her belly button reading 'baby in here'. You know. Just to keep the whole Reaches baby boom going.

Pity the Weyrleader's neighbours, tonight. That's all there is to say.

Poor Teris.

Very much so. Sorry, Teris~
