>---< Nighthearth, High Reaches Weyr(#1549RJ) >------------------------------<
With its entrance located between the kitchen and the living cavern, this
tiny bubble cavern is cozy, always kept warm and is filled with
comfortable chairs and a small round table. At the far end, there's a
hearth, outlined in ruddy, aging bricks, where a pot of stew simmers in
the evening hours. Generally quiet, the nighthearth is the haunt of
insomniacs and those seeking quiet from the bustle of daily Weyr life.

>-----------------------------------------< 23D 2M 39T I10, winter night >---< It's late in the evening, the fire at the night hearth well stoked and a fresh pot of klah brewing. Seated by the fire with a small green flit coiled at her shoulder, Edyis has claimed one of the over stuffed chairs by the fire, a cooling bowl of stew on her table bedside along with a mug set to cool till at a drinkable temperature. She pets the dozing lizard absently. Odrick's movement through the lower caverns is still somewhat stilted by lack of familiarity. When he comes into the smaller bubble cavern, he pauses. This might not be where he'd meant to end up, but it will apparently do for now. He shifts the messenger bag hanging across his body as he makes his way toward the hearth to pour himself a mug of klah, offering a polite smile to the woman should she look at him along his way. Ink-dark eyes lift and follow the movement returning the smile with one of her own, Edyis studies the man thoughtfully a moment before. "I don't think I've seen you around before, but I could be mistaken. The lizard stretches with a tongue curling on, turning to watch the new human too. The Harper glances back at Edyis consideringly, then finishes pouring his klah. When he moves to sit, it's in a seat near enough the brownrider to facilitate easy conversation. "I don't believe so. But I've met so many people in the last few days that I'm not sure I could honestly say at this point. You don't have a young daughter, do you? Or... sister?" The last seems more uncertain now that he looks at her a touch more closely. Best not to inadvertently offend a woman's age. Edyis laughs a little, "A daughter, wouldn't that be something. I have sisters, but they don't much look like me." She notes thought fully. "Edyis of brown Akluseth. At your service. " She offers with a bright smile. "Ah. She must not be related to you, then. There's a girl in my class who could be, by the looks of her." He has a fond smile for the thought. The man relaxes into his seat only after removing his back and setting it down at his feet. "Well met, Edyis of brown Akluseth. I'm Journeyman Harper Odrick. I've only been here for a few days now, so it's more than likely this is the first time that we've met. And who might that be?" He asks the last with a slight nod toward the sleeping firelizard, then takes a careful sip of his klah. Edyis smiles, "Sorry to disappoint." There is a tilt of her head and a sleepy chirp from the lizard, "A second teacher, Reaches is quite fortunate these days it would seem. "Flicker, she's a little young but growing swiftly." There is a wry smile, "So you teach the smaller kids then, must be exhausting work. " "I'll manage somehow," Odrick offers with a good-natured smile. "High Reaches has a small handful of teachers, actually. But we can be a difficult bunch to keep track of, I imagine. Journeymen as a group, really." Of the firelizard, he says, "She's lovely. I'd say to enjoy her while she's young. They grow so quickly. But if you have a dragon, you must know it infinitely better than me." Edyis says, "Between yourself and Journeyman Quintus I imagine the weyr's youth are probably in good hands. What made you decide to pursue teaching?" Flicker opens her eyes, craning her neck to peer at the man. "She's awfully like her dam in all the best and worst ways, but she's learning to be useful." She laughs "She's easier than a dragon though, quite a bit less fun perhaps."" "Quint. I'd forgotten he was here." Whether that means something or not, it leaves Odrick with his typical smile. He changes the subject with another nod to the firelizard, though, "I've one of my own. She's an independent creature. But she does her job and I suppose that's all I can ask of her." He takes another drink of his klah, thoughtful. If she takes particular note of that reaction it doesn't show, or perhaps it is merely filed away for later. That the question goes unanswered is also noted. "Reaches doesn't seem to be easy on them, cold as between some nights." Lifting her mug and drawing it quietly. "What made you choose a place like this instead of someplace warm?" "She does seem to prefer the heat of the hearth on the colder nights, but I've never noticed her being unreasonably uncomfortable with the cold." Odrick lets his gaze settle on the hearth, but it returns to Edyis when he answers her. "I'm from Fort Hold. It's not the warmest place on Pern. And it seemed a shame to pass up the opportunity to experience Weyr life." Mention of fort sends both eyebrows up slightly, and there's a thoughtful silence as Edyis strokes the green absently. "Seems like there's been the talk of all kinds of turmoil in that part of the world these days, but I haven't been that way since their senior disappeared." She lifts a shoulder, "Strange time to choose to live in a weyr, before you know it folk will start to get it in their head that we no longer serve a purpose." "I assure you that the Hold and the Weyr are quite separate. I've only visited the Weyr on a couple of occasions. Hatchings, mostly. It's a shame, certainly, to lose anyone." Odrick seems to find her last comment of particular interest, head tilting in a way that he might not be entirely aware of. "Do you think you still serve a purpose, dragonrider?" "I would find it hard to imagine otherwise," She notes of the hold and weyr. Still his sudden interest catches her off guard, and she looks into the steam rising from her cup as though an answer might be found there. "I used to believe that was the case, I'd like to believe it could be the case again. Thread will come, but it's the interim that I worry about." Odrick frowns at something, but he takes another drink from his mug, starting to sit forward and shift toward the edge of his seat. "If it's any consolation, I believe that everyone is of use, to some extent or another. If nothing else, the dragonriders of Pern offer the rest of us a rather convenient form of transportation." He smiles at the woman, then starts to rise, grabbing his bag as he goes. "Forgive me, but I think it's time for me to get some work done. Perhaps I'll even sleep tonight." There's a joke in there somewhere. "It was a pleasure to meet you, Edyis." Something in his frown, or perhaps the man's words has her eyes lingering on him, expression unreadable. A faint smile escapes at mention of transportation. "And you Journeyman Odrick." |
