It was about three months after the first time, when Ahruth circled the little cothold that held the sick old man and his granddaughter, that E'sren visited them personally for the last time.

After his trip there during sweeps with Z'ian, after seeing and knowing for himself that there was a person who needed help more immediately than he was getting it, he'd made it a point. No more was he going to ask questions the answers to which didn't matter, he wasn't gonna play that game anymore. He thought about his dad, and his mother, and what kind of people they were. They didn't turn away anyone who was hungry, if they had food; they didn't sit safe in their wagons when it rained if there was somebody outside sneezing in the cold.

It was a changing moment for him, when he realized he was going to separate himself from them. From the Weyr, in at least so far as not thinking the same things were important. He didn't tell Z'ian what he was planning to do. Maybe the less he knew, the better.

First he found a Healer, that was the hardest part, just getting someone to come with him. He took her away from her duties, he knew, but she came, got on Ahruth with him and they flew to the spot. Not Between, no, he wouldn't do that to her, or to himself. Not when they could get there straight. The old man had pneumonia, needed medicine, the Healer gave them what she had and taught the girl how to use it, how to continue treating him.

Since then, E'sren came to resupply her, every week, and to make sure they had enough food, warm clothes and blankets to keep the sickness from coming back.

Today, on the 22nd day of the 13th month, not too long after his own birthday, he leaves the cothold after a hug from the girl inside, a handshake from the old man, sitting in his rocking chair before the fire, and walks up to Ahruth, who waits not far off.

They leave the area, and while Ahruth wings them swiftly home E'sren has time to think. He comes to conclusions, and sets his jaw. Let them all play their little politic games. He didn't care about any of that anymore.

< Awesome. E'sren's reaction to how things are being handled is different, but makes total sense from where he comes from and who he is as a person. I actually thought about the old man after that log with Z'ian, and it's really cool to see E'sren actually go out of his way to help someone. Feels good, man.
