"You will never find someone who's loyalty to you is first and foremost."
RL Date: 5 January, 2007
Who: M'wen, R'hin
Involves: High Reaches Weyr
Type: Log
When: Day 26, Month 6, Turn 10 (Interval 10)

Your location's current time: 20:16 on day 26, month 6, Turn 60, of the Tenth Pass. It is a summer evening.

You climb up some steps into the Lighthouse. Lighthouse Deck-HRH(#2520RJa) This is the beautiful LightHouse Deck. It is located on the westernmost point of the Hold. From here, the sea can be seen as far as the eye can see in every direction. Boats are milling around far below, working their way around the rocks and crags which litter the bay path. This seems like a very good place to sit and relax with your friends. The air here is calm and refreshing, and smells lightly of saltwater. You can feel cool drafts from the water below. The deep greeny-blue coloured water below you sparkles warmly under the sun's glare.

The only safe way off the deck is back down the stairs to the Cove.

Obvious exits: Cove

M'wen climbs up the steps to the Deck. M'wen has arrived.

R'hin's settled at his usual table, an unopened bottle of wine and a couple of glasses sitting on the surface. The Weyrleader's without his knot, tonight, looking casual and rather relaxed, all told, leaning back easily in the chair and watching some of the patrons.

M'wen strides up the steps, a quick glance about before walking purposeully towards R'hin's table, an easy grin settled onto his features. He hooks one of the chairs at the table with his foot and slides it out with a faint spin and sits down across from the bronzerider. A brief nod of greeting is given, along with, "Things are well?"

"Well enough indeed," R'hin answers easily, leaning forward to pick up the bottle, opening it as if awaiting M'wen's presence before doing so. "And how are the weyrlings? I saw you earlier in the bowl with them, flaming."

"They are learning fast," M'wen responds quickly, "very fast indeed. Shanlee, W'red and Charis make a good team." He gives a brief grin at the memory of the flaming, "It was quite spectacular to watch. You should've come by, they would've liked your presense." A light laugh is given before he adds, "And what have you been up to these days? If you don't mind me asking."

"Best I not get in the way of particular aspects of training," R'hin replies, with equanimity. He passes over a full glass, leaning back, pale eyes travelling to the brownrider as his brow quirks with interest. "And what of... Shanlee? She, came to me, expressing an interest in becoming my assistant. I thought to use a non-rider, but..." he trails off, with a tip of head, silently requesting the other's counsel on the matter.

M'wen accepts the glass with a frown, though it's easyto see it as a frown of thought and not negativity, "Shanlee...I have my thoughtson her, but irst, explain to me why you want a non-rider so bad and I can better make my thoughts known." He takes a sip of the wine, pausing to wait for a response from the Weyrleader.

R'hin bestows a thoughtful, speculative look on his face, but does as bid, explaining with a lift of his hand, palm upwards, "Simple enough," he says, "It's about loyalty. A rider's first loyalty is to their dragon, then to the Weyr. I need an assistant I can trust with secrets that could undo me. I would... rather they are loyal to me first, then to the Weyr." His voice, as he explains it, is matter of fact, not in the least apologetic.

"You will never find someone who's loyalty to you is first and foremost, but I understand your concerns," M'wen begins, a speculative sip taken, "And in the long run, a rider will have -more- loyalty towards you then a non-rider, from habit if nothing else. Shanlee however, I do not know if she is what you are looking for. But out of those I know able, she may as well be the top of the list."

The dark little chuckle R'hin gives concedes M'wen's words, shrugging a little in response as if it's of little import. "There is a reason I have found no one suitable to date," he says by way of agreement, lifting his own glass and taking an appreciative sip. "Perhaps," he adds, "But queens can question other dragons, and they cannot lie. That is something that, too, I must consider." Why, exactly, he doesn't specify. "Why do you think she is not what I'm looking for?" He asks, curious.

M'wen gives an almost apologetic look to R'hin at the admission, "Maybe your standards are just too high? You have admitted yourself that you aren't one people are apt to respect and be loyal too, yet have that as the main criteria for this help?" He looks out over the patrons of the bar, "You expect a queen to be interfering in your plans?" He doesn't specify his thoughts on Shanlee, yet.

"My standards are definitely high," R'hin agrees, easily, attention on his glass, though a little twitch of lips is evidenced. "I want only the best - is that too much to ask?" He exhales slowly, shaking his head. "No, but one never overlooks the potential problems and possibilities."

"Well it is too much to ask," M'wen replies, somewhat slowly, "Especailly because your best isn't going to be achieveable." He gives a grin to take any harshness out of the words, "There will always be problems and if you prevent yourself from achieving what you need to because of them, nothing will get done and you will achieve -nothing-." He wyrly adds, "Shanlee seems to be yet another of the 'Reaches folks with a shady past. Seems like we draw in the mysterious types."

Although R'hin's eyes narrow briefly, the tapping of fingers against the tabletop suggests he's taking M'wen's words under consideration. "Perhaps you're right," he concedes, after a time. "But I don't wish myself - and our plans - undone by a poor choice of character." He gulps a mouthful of the wine, eyebrows rising in sudden surprise. "Shady, hm? I hadn't heard," he confesses, with some surprise. "It is something I should... inquire about, before going any further."

"I think loyalty to the plan itself is more important then loyalty to you," M'wen adds, somewhat sheepishly. "Because the two go hand in hand, but it's easier to be loyal to a vision then a person. If someone has faith in the plan, they won't let it be undone no matter what." He's since drained the glass, and leans across the table, gaze on R'hin, "It's just the feeling I get from her, plus something I heard her and B'yan talking about." He gives a small shrug, seeming unlikely to continue for whatever reason.

A low chuckle emanates from the Weyrleader, particularly at the brownrider's sheepishness. "Very true, but then again - that could be my failing. My faith in the plan, and the fact that I won't let anyone undo what we've done, what we'll do." His voice has lowered, somewhat, but no less vehement for all that. He too, finishes off his glass, reaching for the bottle to refill both through sheer habit. "Ah. And yet you are the one that has oftentimes told me it is not the past that matters, if one changes. She has, I think. She wishes to be more than a stereotypical greenrider, and that I admire."

M'wen looks to the Weyrleader, a look of respect written across his face, "We'll see what comes along. I'm sure whatever the case things will come together or fall apart from one final decision. I do not think finding your assistant is that decision." He gives a mild shrug and grin before responding with, "But do we know if she has changed? Other then with Kaylith, where do her loyalties lie? I do think she could do this for you but we must consider all sides of the issue." With a chuckle he adds, "But perhaps all greenriders tell themselves the same thing before their first flight."

"With the Weyr," R'hin says with a certainty that suggests he's certain of that much, at least. "Beyond her dragon, her loyalties are to the Weyr." A curve of lips, as he concedes, "True enough. I told her we would talk again after she graduates, and we will see how much she has changed, I imagine." With a tip of his head, he drains the next glass in a series of gulps, exhaling. "But, for now, Leiventh tells me I am needed back at the Weyr."

"We can wait," M'wen agrees with certainty, "Time is the one thing we do have." M'wen drains his glass as well before sliding it across the table, "I think you're best to look in the weyr as you will find those most loyal to yourself there." He gives a sharp salute, though still sitting, losing some of its power, "Clear skies, R'hin."

"Your counsel, as ever, is well considered," R'hin murmurs, with gratitude. He returns the salute after standing, adding a nod. "Clear skies, M'wen," he responds with a smile, heading for the exit.

You climb down the stairs leaving the Lighthouse.
