Infirmary, High Reaches Weyr

Two sets of double doors, one from the the inner caverns and a recently built set from the dragon infirmary, lead into the unnaturally hushed human infirmary. Despite fastidious cleaning, the scent of redwort and numbweed has long since soaked into every smooth-carved surface, along with other, subtler medicinal smells. Pristinely made cots are lined up against the walls; most of them are left open to view, but some in the back are surrounded by curtains for delicate procedures or critical patients.

About halfway between the two entrances is the counter for the healers on duty; it guards the entrance to the storage rooms just beyond, their shelves and cabinets lined with meticulously labeled bottles, boxes, jars, and even vats of supplies. The Weyrhealer's office is also here, along with another side room for mixing up medicines and the like.

Not too long after breakfast, N'ky steps into the infirmary from the inner caverns, his flying gear hooked over his cast, hair ruffled into an impossible tangle of curls not just from from his helmet, but from the winds that's whipping through the Weyr, and that's coloured his cheeks rosy red. The greenrider pads his way softly along to the counter, hushing each footstep as much as possible as he goes, and clearing his throat to gently try and capture the attention of whoever's on duty.

Madilla's ever-lucky Apprentices are on duty at the desk: Jinja looks bored, and Treinan ever-vigilant. It's no wonder, then, that it's the latter who straightens in answer to N'ky's throat clearing, jumping to attention. "Did you need something, uh-- Weyrling?" They're familiar enough, no doubt, by this point... but Treinan is nothing but a stickler for the rules.

N'ky greets the apprentices with a silent nod of his head, before transferring his gear to his other arm, allowing him to hold his cast up. "Checking in," he says quietly, with a slightly sheepish shrug of his shoulders. "Um... last time... they said it, um, might be able to come off? Is there someone who can... look at it?"

"I can look at it," announces Jinja, who abruptly looks interested... even if Treinan gives her a look of absolute horror. "Jin--" "Shut up, Treinan. Just because you're a baby. Come on. We'll go and have a look in one of the--" "Jin." "In one of the examining rooms." The dark-haired girl, significantly taller and older than her male compatriot, turns on her heel to lead the way.

Treinan is given a little shrug of almost-apology as N'ky takes what he's given, and follows Jinja. "Are you sure there are no, um, j-journeymen free?" There's only a little hesitation in his tone as he shortens his stride to match hers. "I, um, think it's in my notes. That it might be able to come off, um, this seven."

Treinan looks significantly unhappy... and the moment N'ky begins following Jinja, he hurries off towards the offices at the back, presumably to tell on her. "No," says Jinja, pertly. "But I'm nearly a journeyman, so it's fine. I'll have a look; I'll see. Didn't you do something stupid the first time?"

"Ok." N'ky might sound accepting of Jinja's authority, but he's still slightly dubious. But, since's she's the Healer and he isn't... Her question makes him blush deeply, and he looks down at his over-large feet as he follows her. "Yeah." Sullen, spoken to his toes. "I took it off myself. I've, um, s-still got my hoof kit." His wince is just visible behind the curtain of curls that have fallen over his eyes, what with him looking down.

"Well, that was stupid," says Jinja, imperiously. "You could have severely damaged your healing process. You could have stopped it from healing altogether. I half think we should just leave you in plaster for longer, just to remind you of how important it is." She turns over her shoulder to stare at him, then waves her arm towards the examination cubicle in front of her.

N'ky frowns as he passes Jinja, following her direction into the cubicle. "The journeyman last time said I c-could get it off this seven. I-I can always go do it myself." He hops up onto the bed, brows still lowered as he looks at the apprentice. "You d-don't have to speak to me like that. I already know."

"Don't you dare." Jinja still has a ways to go in her training, but she has perfected the healer glower... and the tone of voice to go with it. "Or I'll send word to your Weyrlingmasters that you're not to be cleared to do anything. Clearly, you didn't know."

N'ky shrugs, before snipping back with, "And I'll tell Madilla that your b-bedside manner sucks." He holds out his cast towards her, returning her glower for his own curl-hidden one. A toss of his head and a huff of breath upwards clears some of his hair from his eyes, leaving one annoying curl to spring right back down in front of the left one as he juts his arm more insistently towards her.

Jinja sniffs, dramatically. "I'm only nice to people who deserve it. You wasted everyone's time, and--" "Jinja." That's Madilla, stepping up behind the dark-haired apprentice, who colours immediately. "I'll take it from here. Go and help Treinan in the workroom."

The more Jinja talks, the more unhappy N'ky's expression becomes, and it's a dark glower that he turns to Madilla when she appears. It softens only a little, coloured by the blush on his cheeks as he looks down at his lap, peeping up only to see Jinja's reaction before quickly looking away again. Then he runs his tongue over his lips, holding out his arm to Madilla this time. "Morning, journeyman Madilla." He doesn't look up, that frown focused down on the riding jacket that's now slung over his thighs.

JInja's expression is defiant, and utterly undaunted by Madilla's interruption. "Yes, Journeyman," she says, apparently blithely cheerful despite the unspoken reprimand. She doesn't look at N'ky as she sidles out; Madilla, by contrast, gives him an appraising glance. "Good morning, N'ky."

N'ky tracks Jinja's departure with brown eyes half-squinted, while his hand curls tight into the leather of his jacket and his teeth dig down into his bottom lip. The fingers of his outstretched, cast-clad arm are flexed, tensed, curled into as tight a fist as can be made given the plaster's restrictions, then unfurled and relaxed. A brief look up at Madilla is accompanied by a wan attempt at a smile in reply to her greeting, but that's about it.

Madilla's reaction to N'ky's faux-pas over the initial cast removal has been more restrained than that of some of her colleagues, and right now, her glance in his direction is appraising rather than anything more serious. "Let's have a look at it," she prompts.

Turning his healing - healed, hopefully - arm over so the heel of his hand's held up, N'ky looks along the cast, watching as he turns it back the other way. He wiggles his fingers again, biting down on his tongue, which just slightly protrudes from between his teeth and lips, as he stretches each digit as far as possible and mumbles, "It itches. I'd like it off, please."

"I'm sure you would," says Madilla, not curtly, but without some of her usual warmth. Only, more softly; "Let me just see. Wiggle your fingers for me again? Are you feeling any pain?"

N'ky's obedient enough; he wiggles each digit in turn, then all of them together. "It aches a bit," he admits, his frown softening a touch, but still not completely disappeared. "Just aching, though. Um... not hurting." Teeth sink into his bottom lip as he flexes his fingers, then lets them fall limp again. "And itching."

The first sound Madilla makes is indecipherable, neither approving nor disapproving in any obvious fashion. "Hm," she says, finally. "Well, we'll give it a go. You'll need to do regular exercises afterwards, though, to rebuild the muscle tone. Sit back." She has sharp implements to use.

Nodding, N'ky does as he's told, settling comfortably with his arm held out and easily manipulated into whatever position is required. "More than just wing exercises? Will I be able to do all of them again?" A little more of that frown's chipped away. He lifts his head a little, to look at Madilla. "I-it'll be ok though, won't it? I can do normal things again?"

"Physical therapy for your arm," explains Madilla. "I'll get Treinan to show you, after we're finished." Not Jinja. "You'll have to work up to full use of it - it may be weakened - but you should be safe enough for most things. Just don't try and over-extend yourself." She starts sawing, concentrating intently.

So as not to distract the healer with a saw to his arm, N'ky just nods gently, watching in wide-eyed silence; it apparently not as easy to see someone else hacking away so close to his skin. When it seems safe, he gives a soft huff of amusement. "It's much quicker with a saw."

"But you'll never use a saw again, will you." Madilla's tone is not really chiding. She pulls away the pieces of the cast, dropping them into a convenient bin, and then brings over some warm water and a cloth to wash the arm. "And then you're done. I'll send Treinan over to talk to you, unless there's something else?"

"I used a rasp, ma'am. Didn't want to steal a saw from the workrooms." N'ky flexes his newly-freed arm, rubbing his other hand along it before setting nails to scratch the itch that's been bothering him for so long. Madilla's question has him pausing thoughtfully for a second, before he shakes his head. "Nothing else. Um... just thank you."

"Well... don't try and use one of those, either," says Madilla, her mouth twisting just slightly. She wipes her hand on a cloth, and then nods. "Don't let me see you in here again any time soon, okay? Not for something like this. I'll send Treinan over." She leaves-- and her Apprentice arrives soon after, pleased and proud to be given the opportunity to instruct the greenrider.

"No ma'am," N'ky says by way of a farewell as Madilla leaves. He's got a slightly brighter smile for Treinan when he comes in - it's a whole lot warmer than the parting look Jinja got, that's for sure.
