| It was one of those perfect mornings, really. K'del woke hours before dawn, but the bed was cozily warm, and Iolene was perfectly amenable to being snuggled up against. He breathed into the warm curve of her neck and felt utterly content; a moment later, when her hand slipped between them, he felt something quite different. They made long, languorous love - quietly, so as not to wake the boys, sleeping out in the main room near the hearth. K'del buried his cries into Iolene's shoulder; she bit her lip, holding hers in. Later, they curled up together amidst the furs, carefully avoiding the wet patch left by his sticky princes. Perhaps some of them were on a journey, even now. Perhaps today was the day... Iolene sighed against him. She wasn't feeling well, she told him. She didn't think she should come today. She should stay home and rest. She could meet his family another time. It was the day of his family reunion. Everyone was going to be there. All the children and their spouses, all the grandchildren. All except Nakasha. And Iolene, whom most had never met. "Are you-- you're not--?" "No." No. She wasn't pregnant. K'del bit back his disappointment, and contented himself with playing with her hair, pushing it back behind one ear as he propped himself up on his elbow to look at her. "It's fine," he promised. "You need to look after yourself. I know..." I know things have been hard. It's been a turn, and we should have a baby, and we don't. He didn't say it out loud. She fell asleep again, and finally, he convinced himself to crawl free from the covers and feel the chill of the morning air on his bare skin. They needed to be there early: his mother had made him promise he'd be on hand to help collect various family members. The boys would be glad to spend time with their cousins. K'del almost wished that he could stay here, in bed, with Iolene. But he bathed, and he dressed, and then he saw his boys bathed and dressed, too. Six and a half, now, the pair of them: near-twin redheads. When it was time to go he ushered them onto the ledge and told them to wait; he hurried back indoors to the bedroom, where Iolene slept on. "Hey," he said, sitting down on the bed beside her, one hand reaching out to touch her shoulder. It was cold - the furs had slipped. He tucked them back around her. "We're heading off now. We'll be back before dinner." She nodded, smiling up at him in a bleary, half-awake kind of fashion. He leaned in, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "Get some rest," he said. "Take it easy. Everything thinks you've gone with me, so I don't imagine anyone will bother you." "Love you." And then he was gone. Cadejoth and his passengers disappeared into the still pre-dawn sky, seen by no one but the watchdragon. Left behind, Iolene dozed off again, sprawled diagonally across the bed. And Ysavaeth, largely hidden from view in the cozy confines of her couch, slept on. |
