As Dal makes his way back into the barracks, he's got his arm /finally/ out of the sling, though he's holding it in a ginger kind of way, as if he's no longer sure what to actually do with it. Still, even if he's not actually /smiling/, there's a lightness in his step that suggests he's pleased with this outcome... and anticipatory, too, because, "Sounds like it could happen at any time, now. That's what they're all saying." It's a general remark, his voice raised a little above conversational so as to address more of the room.

Seated on her cot, with one leg folded under the other, Elise is reading from a book in her lap when Dal comes in, and immediately begins to play with her hair. It's what he /says/. "Oh... Really." She tries to feign disinterest, no big deal, and hopefully it comes off okay. Tipping her chin up to acknowledge, she comments, "You're out of your sling."

Oreithiya isn't far off behind Dal, the girl looking flushed and a touchy sweaty and has the sweet smell of laundry cleaner clinging to her as she makes her way to her cot. Flopping down on it, she throws an arm over her eyes and takes a much needed breather. "Yeah, it could be," she comments, peeking out from under her arm to Dal. "How's the shoulder?" her quiet question carries undertones of polite concern. Elise is spotted and offered a slight smile and nod. "You guys ready for it?"

"It's not quite as good as new," says Dal of his missing sling (or, more accurately, his shoulder). "Not yet. But they're happy with it. Enough that I can get out on those Sands, anyway." He gives it a tentative flex, and admits, as he drops to his own cot, "It feels a bit weird. I'm..." Dark eyes turn their attention towards Elise, lingering for a moment, and then slide back to Oreithiya. "As much as I can be, I think. It'll be good to have it all over with, one way or another."

Eyebrows lifted too now, Elise glances at Oreithiya and then down at something else. "No," she answers honestly. "I don't see how anyone could be really ready." She catches the look from Dal in a moment where she looks up again, but quickly looks away. "But I'm hoping that my nerves will just take care of everything for me. You know, like... when you feel really really calm during something really intense?"

"I'm never ready," Oreithiya admits, even after asking the others if they are. "It's too... unknown. Our whole lives could be changed in an instant or they could be changed not at all. I don't think /anyone/ can prepare for that." She nibbles her lip and pushes herself up into a cross-legged position on her cot. She plucks lint fuzz off of her work pants, answering Elise, "I hope so too. If you discover how to do that, let me know, mm?" A loosely held grin is shot towards the other girl.

Dal glances down at his boots, as though he's presently deciding between taking them off or not; he doesn't, instead turning his attention back towards the girls. "Deep breaths," he advises, apparently quite calm - at least if a person doesn't look too closely at his hands, which are clenched at his sides. "There's nothing /we/ can do to change things, one way or another, right?"

Though not a grin, Elise's little hesitant smile is still friendly enough. It's gone quickly, but such is the nature of Elise's smiles. "Life's never going to be the same again. Anyone who could come out of something like this and still be the same person? I don't know..." She's busily twirling hair around her fingers now, her hands moving quickly as if she might be weaving something with it. "Right," she replies, for Dal, another of her little smiles curving her mouth.

Bria comes into the barracks looking even more wide-eyed and scattered than usual. "Oh my," is all she says as she makes her way over to her cot, though. She doesn't make it there, though. Instead something else grabs her attention and she walks right over to Dal, peering at his shoulder then looking at his face. "Are you better? What if it happens and you aren't *better?*"

"I suppose that's true enough," Oreithiya comments slowly, "Although, after getting through the initial disappointment, I felt more like myself the first two times. Throwing myself back into my work and all, so." She shrugs at that, glancing at Dal. "Nothing. It's not on us at all, from what I understand, but on the dragonets." Bria's entrance turns Rei's attention, a little wave in greeting offered. "Afternoon, Bria."

Dal must be relatively used to Bria's, uh, nature by now, because he doesn't bat an eyelid as she walks up - and promptly waves his arm, newly released from that sling, to demonstrate. "Better /enough/, apparently, according to the Healers today. I'm safe. Are you doing okay? Deep breaths, right?" He reaches out, evidently intending to squeeze the girl's arm, and adds, to the room as a whole, "So we're just going to stick together, remember to breath, and hope for the best."

Bria! "Hi Bria," Elise greets, and maybe it's because she's been spending more time with that candidate in particular, the project and all, but she actually /does/ grin through her greeting. And Dal's encouragement, it carries on through for that too, and she adds in a firm nod. "Stick together. Nobody leave me by myself," she adds, pointing a finger around, eyes narrowed.

"Hi, Oreithiya!" says Bria, beaming over at her from in front of Dal. Her attention turns quickly back to him, narrowing her eyes as he waves his arm like she's critiquing the healers' decisions. And then she's smiling again, coming to whatever decision she comes to. "Good! It would have been so *horrible* if you couldn't have been there with the rest of us." She seems content that all is well, though, takes a big breath and waves at Elise. "I'll make sure you're never by yourself!"

Reesa, sporting a nice new summer dress - completely unsuited to the very cold weather outside - comes bustling into the barracks. She's a whirl of movement and excitement, barking, "Right! Candidates, time to get dressed, come on! There's not much time!" That's about when that distant sort of noise can be heard, like a buzzing that seems to permeate the very stone of the walls.

Falling silent, Oreithiya seems more interested in plucking the lint off her pants while listening to Bria, Dal and Elise. Bria's returned greeting /is/ met with a further smile, but then Reesa steals the show. "Wh--" Oreithiya /almost/ asks the obvious question of 'now' -- the near-asked question so plainly writ across her features -- before she's jumping up and hastily exchanging work clothes for a third-time-used Candidate robe. Humming. /Now/.

In retrospect, not taking off his boots was not precisely an ideal thing: Dal's thrown into action, standing, and squeezing past Bria - carefully - so that he can grab for his robe, and begin changing. Which involves taking off his boots and then putting them on again (stupid pants). He's surprisingly quiet about, too, without so much of an exclamation of excitement or anticipation... though there's something in his expression, too, that speaks to both.

Beaming at Bria, Elise is distracted. So when Reesa walks in she's understandably caught off guard and rapid-blinks at the greenrider. "Wait..." It's a helpless sort of thing to say, like maybe they could just slow things down a little, but when everyone else starts going into hyper drive to get ready she jumps up from her cot to do the same. While she's getting her robe on, she's also trying to be discreet since she's still, you know, Holdbred. But she's quick about it anyway.

Vashelle enters on the heels of Reesa... not literally, but potentially a little close for comfort. Once she's within the barracks, though, she makes a break for her cot, then starts stripping down with one hand while trying to find her robe with the other.

The dumbfounded looks only earn more (some might suggest /delighted/) barking from Reesa: "Yes, now, and yes, it's happening. Quick, quick. You don't have much time. Line up here when you're done." She points to the door that she's standing by in preparation.

Elise is operating on pure instinct now, and a lot like when she was helping that healer tend to Dal's wounds, she follows intructions on autopilot. Get in line, stand here, she can do that.

Bria sort of freezes when Reesa comes in and that buzzing starts. Deer in headlights! She's a little slow to start, finally moving over to her own cot to leave Dal more room, and goes about changing. She's not quite as discreet as Elise but she turns her back on everyone while she does it and she's still pulling on her sandals as she moves over to line up. "Oh *my.* Is it really happening? This isn't a drill, is it? Maybe we should have been practicing this more. I'm not ready yet!"

It's /after/ he's changed, and /after/ he's crossed towards the waiting Reesa, that Dal turns to look for Elise, and to offer her his hand-- which is warm, and only faintly sweaty. "You'll be fine," he promises. And louder, to everyone: "/We'll/ be fine."

As soon as she's got her robe on and sandals buckled on, Rei is quick to the join the line of Candidates, angling for a spot next to Giada and Vashelle. "It's time," she mutters more to herself than to anyone else, though she motions Bria forward, urging the other Candidate on. Heck, every Candidate -- Dal, Elise, Wyriker, Denali -- get wide-eyed looks before she turns herself back to the line. Deep breath. She can do this.

There's a kind of distant look to Reesa's expression a moment, like she's listening. Then the greenrider straightens. "Okay, time to go. Out, out, all of you," she waves her hands like she's shooing children or something.
