The drums thumped slowly, deliberately. Each impact was drawn out, the strain of taut skin turning into a subtle whine. « Daerth is landing on Pelyth's ledge. »

"Is he?" Azaylia murmured from her desk, stylus marking the hide in front of her with bubbly script. "She's probably proddy, sweetheart." She could taste the syrupy sweetness in the back of her throat. The words sounded forced, even to her.

« I was going to visit tonight. » Hraedhyth rumbled, naturally low register sounding hoarse. Restrained. Her eyes whirled faster as she watched the blue warble and preen at the unmistakably glowing green's hide.

Azaylia flinched without realizing it, lips pursed and eyes clenched tight at the thrum of sadness she could hear- no, feel within her lifemate. She took in a slow breath, "Hrae, honey. I think... one more night? Then you can start visiting the other dragons again."

« One more. » The gold repeated for the fifth night in a row. With a huff, she crossed paws and rested her head atop them, facing away from the smaller, cuddling pair.

Azaylia swallowed and managed to lift her hand to make a mark, and another. Slowly, shakily, she did her best to remain calm and continue writing.

She wouldn't allow herself to remember the way Hraedhyth had looked at Rielsath that night. To remember how badly her dragon, her heart, had wanted to rip the older gold out of the sky. That her lifemate could be capable of such genuine hatred, enough that she'd want to kill...

How could the goldrider risk another rider's dragon like that?

"Just one more." She murmured, knowing that through their bond she would be heard. "It's not so bad staying home with me. Is it?" Azaylia honestly worried for a moment, that by keeping an eye on her queen she was hurting her. That her own fears would cause her dragon to resent her.

Hraedhyth was quick to reassure, rumble of frustration easing into something soothing. « No. » But, « It feels different. » Wrong. « Sleeping alone every night. » Lonely.

Azaylia could sympathize there, "I know." She had a 'but' of her own, "It's good to learn to be independent. Like... like Brieli. Or Madilla." With a half-convinced nod, the junior bent over her work once more.

The young gold gave a hearty exhale through her nose as she settled, prepared to spend another night in her own wallow. Independence was all well and good, but it wasn't another warm dragon curled up beside her.
