| Lake Shore, High Reaches Weyr The rest of the bowl may be barren, grass barely surviving at best, but here by the lake, it's brilliantly green in the warmer months: thickening and thriving in the silty, boulder-dotted soil just before it transitions to soft sand and thence to the cool, clear water itself. A large freshwater lake fed by a low waterfall, it not only provides warm-weather bathing space for humans and dragons, but has one end fenced off as a watering hole for the livestock in the feeding grounds. The water there is often muddier than the rest of the clear lake, whose shallows drop off abruptly several yards out into deep water, and whose edge undulates against the coarse-hewn bowl wall: here close enough to just be bramble-covered rocks, there far enough away that a narrow land bridge divides the main lake from a smallish pond. Between are several rocky outcroppings that form excellent makeshift diving points, though only one -- across the bridge -- has a set of narrow, slippery, quite possibly tempting stairs. It's yet another nice day at High Reaches, the kind of day that Sho can actually handle just wearing shorts. And speaking of the devil, the boy has some time off from the stables and decided to spend it here. He's laying on a towel down near the water, hands clasped behind his head and his eyes closed, just soaking in the sun. It's good to not be freezing. It's nice to have time off. It's likely, however, that K'del has /not/ had any, not given the formality of his full riding leathers, or the way his hair has been combed down so sharply. The young man swings down from a dusty-looking Cadejoth, unbuckling the bronze's straps and dumping them on the sand before he even pauses to remove his own jacket, though he must, surely, be sweltering in it. "In with you," he says, tiredly. "Clean it all off." Sho couldn't comb his hair if he tried, what with it being so long. Just one less thing to worry about...nice hair. The dragon and rider's arrival catches Sho's attention and he opens one eye, looking to see who it is. The bronze is easily recognized at this point, being one of the few the boy can tell on sight. Sho sits up and half turns to see the Weyrleader, using his hands behind him to keep himself propped up. "H'lo there Weyrleader sir." He calls out, waving with one hand. Cadejoth, /free/ from his straps, takes a little hopping glide from the lakeshore into the shallows, then lumbers out further until, eventually, he disappears beneath the surface for the most part. His entrance makes waves, but nothing too enormous. K'del's shirt gets untucked, his hair mussed with one hand, his boots removed; as he does all of this, a glance in Sho's direction has him saying, "Hey there, Sho. Nice afternoon for it." "Yes it is. It's nice ta not be freezing anymore. I hope the weather stays like this fer a good long time." Hey, he can hope can't he? Sho watches the dragon lumber into the water with a little grin, then turns back again to watch the Weyrleader. "Finally getting a little break sir?" K'del is about the only one Sho will actually call sir...weird. His more formal gear dumped into a pile on the ground, K'del hoists himself - now barefoot - onto one of the nearby boulders, drawing his knees up towards his chin, his arms wrapping around these in turn. "Won't last but another few sevens," he says, his gaze centered on his bathing dragon; he sounds apologetic for it, too. "Then it'll be rain and fog and chilly until the snows start." As for a break - well, he laughs. "For a little while. More visits to make tomorrow. That time of turn, I guess." Sho lets out a long, drawn out sigh. "Yeah, I kinda figured. But it was nice ta think it'd just stay this way fer a while." His amber eyes look out towards the water then, just relaxing in the sunlight as he sits there. He watches the dragon as well, curious just to see. "Is somethin' going on that ya are so busy right now? Would think that ya need free time just like everyone else. Otherwise yer gonna go crazy." "Yeah," says K'del, his sigh echoing Sho's. "It's been a pretty amazing summer, all told." He's silent for a few long moments after that, watching Cadejoth, who does a little half jump in and out of the water, all, apparently, in fun. "End of summer. Autumn is tithe season... So, right now, it's all about checking in with everyone, making sure the tithes are coming along, making sure we're going to be covered for everything we need. I do get free time, it's just-- well. Lots going on. Take time when I can." Sho blinks as the dragon does tricks. Ooookay. Interesting. The youth tilts his head as he continues watching the dragon, a half grin showing on his features. "I didn't know he did tricks." He says with a hint of sarcasm before looking back at K'del again. "Oh...so busy Weyr type stuff. Well, I guess it'll be good ta have stuff, right?" He asks. Speaking of stuff, Sho reaches into a little wrapped cloth pile he brought with him and pulls out a sweetbun. "Here sir, have a treat." He offers as he underhands the roll towards the Weyrleader. "I...uh...procured them from the kitchen a little while ago." That's a big word...he must use it a lot. "Cadejoth? He does whatever he likes. Should watch him with the kids, sometime." K'del sounds undeniably fond, but then, what rider doesn't, when speaking of his dragon? The offered sweetbun is given a thoughtful glance, then accepted, examined between his fingers for a few moments before, grinning, he says, "'Procured', huh? Know what that means. Thanks. Guess I never quite paused for lunch." One corner of the bun gets torn off, aimed vaguely at his mouth. "It /is/ good to have stuff. Good to make sure it's all lined up - keep us fed and warm through winter. Wouldn't mind being more self-sufficient, sometimes, but... it is what it is." There's a pause as Sho quirks a brow at K'del. "How exactly do ya stay warm in the winter 'round here? Besides wearing four layers of jackets." He asks a bit too dryly, but hey, we already know cold definitely is not his thing. Oh well. "Sorry I didn't get anything else, but the sweetbuns were kinda my focus." He pulls out his own sweetbun then and bites off an edge, chewing it slowly and enjoying it. As he does so again his amber eyes flick out to the water to watch the dragon. And for now that's all he does is just watch, not saying anything else for the moment. It's actually kind of fun to watch a frolicking bronze. K'del recites a litiny of suggestions: "Stay inside as much as possible, or keep moving if outside. Wear the /right/ kind of layers - wool and whatever. Cover your extremities. Things like that." Not that there isn't sympathy in his gaze, all the same. "Sweetbuns are /perfect/," he continues, cheerfully, chewing contentedly. Cadejoth /does/ frolic: he seems to be thoroughly enjoying himself, letting out, every so often, a rumble of glee to go with it. "He hates it," says his rider. "Hanging around, while I talk to people. He'd rather be /doing/ stuff, poor thing." Sho considers K'del's suggestions before nodding a bit. "Yeah...I guess I'll have ta try and prepare fer it a little bit better this time, since I won't be coming right into it." A pause as he considers, "Maybe I can try and find some better clothes'n what I have ta get through." While he talks he doesn't look away from the funny bronze, even as he now takes another bite of his sweetbun. Another few moments after he swallows the bit does he say, "Well, why can't ya let him do other stuff while ya talk? Does he have ta just...stand there?" He asks curiously. "Ought to make a difference. Gradual change, right? Not just-- Southern, and then middle of winter in the 'Reaches." K'del bobs his head cheerfully along with this statement, then adds, "Better check out the stores sooner rather than later, before too many people get into 'em. The stores workers will be happy to help, show you exactly what you need." The bronzerider licks his fingers, though he's far from done with his bun, considering Cadejoth in the distance thoughtfully. "Some holders tend to get... weird. When they fly off on their own. Worried about their herds, maybe, or just unsure what to think. They feel better when he's sitting on the fireheights, or in the courtyard, or whatever." Sho nods again, "Yeah, I guess yer right. I should check 'em soon." He agrees. "I don't want ya stealing all the good stuff." He adds in a tease, knowing that the Weyrleader definitely won't be getting anything from the stores. He pauses then as the bronze considers his swimming adventure. "I dunno what they'd have ta worry about. Even I didn't meet dragons except fer about a Turn ago, and I know they won't do anything bad. They ain't dumb." K'del snorts, extending one of his lengthy arms, and then one of his legs, as if to compare with Sho's. They are /rather/ different sizes. But, grinning, "Exactly right. Might decide to horde it all. I'm the Weyrleader, after all. I can do that." Or something. Head shaking, he adds, "Right? You'd think. But he scared some people, once, and now it just seems easier for him to sit and wait. Maybe it just makes a good statement: you know, the Weyrleader's here, or something. Whatever. Sucks for him, but at least /he/ doesn't have to talk to them." He's teasing, grinning around his next piece of sweetbun. [Sho had to sleep. Presumably, the conversation continued for a little while, and then they went their separate ways.] |
