| He stood on the cove, feeling the cold wind press against him, cutting through the shirt he wore. It was the first time he'd left his suite, left the children, since it happened. Raum stood back, near the path leading up to the Hold. He was the only one beside the Islanders that populated the beach. Rilka. Cason. Jaques. Tomaeran. Riorde. Rhaelyn. Evali. Others. Others, but so much fewer than there should have been. He was without his coat, today. He'd gotten soft. He'd let this life get to him, and he'd forgotten his roots. He'd heard Rilka's warning, but he hadn't heard it. Taking Issedi away from him was the Sea's way of both reminding and punishing him. The Sea gave, and the Sea took away. Fitting then, perhaps, that he would return Issedi's body to the Sea. The holders, the riders, the mainlanders wouldn't understand, and so his wish for privacy was more than a desire to avoid their pitying gaze while he said goodbye to his wife. The islanders, his people, would understand. They would understand the sacrifies he had made for them. He was being punished. But he still wept. |

Chilling and yet, sad.
