Manipulate him, she'd said. Get to know him socially, she'd said. Make him think the ideas are his own.

Quinlys' advice sat ill with K'zin. It was the same as Rasavyth's and he had hoped to be given something different by a Weyrlingmaster. Weyrlingmasters are role-models, though, so if she said it was the way to go, it couldn't be as wrong as it felt.

« It is not wrong, my K'zin. » Slippery as a snake, the ooze laced through the man's thoughts. « Without us, poor Tayabeth and Tayabeth's Sh'mel will lead our wing to harm. You wouldn't want Solith, Ghislaith, or Cailluneth hurt, would you? Nor Ilicaeth, Ahruth, Kazavoth, Jhorinth, Athimeroth, or me, would you? »

« No. » Whatever other indecisiveness K'zin might feel for the matter of manipulation, he could be certain that he didn't want anyone hurt, especially when he was in part responsible for them. « No. » He repeated, caving to the suggestion, a sigh like an inner rock-slide down the unknowingly slippery slope. « It is necessary. We'll do it. »

And so they would. « Ask Tayabeth if she and Sh'mel would come up to the weyr after dinner? Tell them I need their expertise with our mural problem. » That should appeal to an artist, and stroke the ego just enough to instill some good will.

It wasn't much, but it was a start. Tonight would be the first of what Rasavyth was sure would be many performances. He would help his K'zin through it. They would put no foot wrong, together.
